Abstract

An example method includes comparing, via circuitry, a first signal indicative of a first amount of light received by a first light sensor to a second signal indicative of a second amount of light received by a second light sensor, wherein the second light sensor is to compensate for an environmental change by detecting the second amount of light transmitted by a light source regardless of a presence or absence of an object in the conveyance path; determine, via the circuitry, whether a reflection loss is present based on the comparing of the first and second signals; and if the circuitry detects the reflection loss based on the comparing of the first and second signals, generating a presence indication.

Claims (32)

1. A method for an apparatus including a first light sensor positioned on a first side of a conveyance path, a light source positioned on a second side of the conveyance path, and a second light sensor positioned on the second side of the conveyance path, the method comprising:

comparing, via circuitry, a first signal indicative of a first amount of light received by the first light sensor to a second signal indicative of a second amount of light received by the second light sensor, wherein:

the first amount of light comprises light received from the light source;

the second amount of light comprises light received from the light source; and

the second light sensor is to compensate for an environmental change by detecting the second amount of light transmitted by the light source regardless of a presence or absence of an object in the conveyance path, wherein the second light sensor detects the second amount of light in an uninterrupted line from the light source;

determining, via the circuitry, whether a reflection loss is present based on the comparing of the first and second signals; and

if the circuitry detects the reflection loss based on the comparing of the first and second signals, generating a presence indication.

2. A method as defined in claim 1 , wherein the light source is positioned such that a path from the light source to the object in the conveyance path is between thirty degrees and sixty degrees from normal.

3. A method as defined in claim 1 , wherein the light source is positioned such that a path from the light source to the object in the conveyance path is forty-five degrees from normal.

4. A method as defined in claim 1 , wherein the object comprises infrared absorbing layers.

5. A method as defined in claim 4 , wherein the object comprises transparent polyvinyl chloride.

6. A method as defined in claim 1 , wherein the reflection loss is due to surface reflection loss caused by the object.

7. A method as defined in claim 1 , wherein the reflection loss is between ten and twenty percent.

8. A method as defined in claim 1 , wherein the first light sensor comprises a phototransistor or photodiode.

9. A method as defined in claim 1 , wherein the light source is one of a light emitting diode or an incandescent lamp.

10. A method as defined in claim 1 , wherein the apparatus is a printer.

11. A method for an apparatus including a first light sensor positioned on a first side of a conveyance path, a light source positioned on a second side of the conveyance path, and a reference sensor positioned on the second side of the conveyance path, the method comprising:

determining, via circuitry and based on a comparison of a first signal and a reference signal, whether a reflection loss in light transmitted by the light source is present, wherein:

the first light sensor is to provide the first signal to the circuitry to indicate a first amount of light received from the light source at a first time;

the reference sensor is to compensate for an environmental change by detecting a reference amount of light transmitted by the light source regardless of a presence or absence of an object in the conveyance path, wherein the second light sensor detects the reference amount of light in an uninterrupted line from the light source; and

the reference sensor is to provide the reference signal to the circuitry to indicate the reference amount of light at the first time;

if the circuitry does not detect the reflection loss in the transmitted light, generating a media not present indication; and

if the circuitry detects the reflection loss in the transmitted light, generating a media present indication.

12. A method as defined in claim 11 , wherein the light source is positioned such that a path from the light source to the object in the conveyance path is between thirty degrees and sixty degrees from normal.

13. A method as defined in claim 11 , wherein the light source is positioned such that a path from the light source to the object in the conveyance path is forty-five degrees from normal.

14. A method as defined in claim 11 , wherein the object comprises infrared absorbing layers.

15. A method as defined in claim 14 , wherein the object comprises transparent polyvinyl chloride.

16. A method as defined in claim 11 , wherein the reflection loss is due to surface reflection loss caused by the object.

17. A method as defined in claim 11 , wherein the reflection loss is between ten and twenty percent.

18. A method as defined in claim 11 , wherein the first light sensor comprises a phototransistor or photodiode.

19. A method as defined in claim 11 , wherein the light source is one of a light emitting diode or an incandescent lamp.

20. A method as defined in claim 11 , wherein the apparatus is a printer.
