Abstract

The disclosed projector device may include (1) a first monochromatic emitter array having a plurality of emitters of a first color disposed in a two-dimensional configuration and (2) a second monochromatic emitter array having a plurality of emitters of a second color disposed in a two-dimensional configuration. The first and second monochromatic emitter arrays may be configured to emit images of the first and second colors into a waveguide configuration, and the first color may be different than the second color. Associated display systems and methods are also provided.

Claims (29)

1. A display system comprising: a first monochromatic emitter array having a plurality of emitters of a first color disposed in a two-dimensional configuration to produce a first image of the first color; a second monochromatic emitter array having a plurality of emitters of a second color disposed in a two-dimensional configuration to produce a second image of the second color; a waveguide configuration comprising: a first waveguide member including a first coupling element dimensioned to couple a first image of the first color into a first waveguide member body; a second waveguide member including a second coupling element dimensioned differently than the first coupling element to couple a second image of the second color into a second waveguide member body, wherein the first and second waveguide member bodies are configured to laterally propagate the coupled first and second images within the waveguide configuration; and at least one decoupling element configured to project the laterally propagated first and second images toward an eyebox as a projected image, wherein the waveguide body combines the first image of the first color from the first monochromatic emitter array and the second image of the second color from the second monochromatic emitter array such that the projected image comprises at least one color different than the first and second colors.

2. The display system of claim 1 , further comprising a third monochromatic emitter array having a plurality of emitters of a third color disposed in a two-dimensional configuration.

3. The display system of claim 2 , wherein the waveguide body combines:

the first image of the first color from the first monochromatic emitter array;

the second image of the second color from the second monochromatic emitter array; and

a third image of the third color from the third monochromatic emitter array into the projected image, the projected image comprising at least one color different than the first, second, and third colors.

4. The display system of claim 1 , wherein the first waveguide member includes a decoupling element that directs light of the first color through the second waveguide member body toward the eyebox as part of the projected image.

5. A method comprising: directing emission of a first monochromatic image from a first monochromatic emitter array toward a first coupling element of a waveguide configuration; directing emission of a second monochromatic image from a second monochromatic emitter array toward a second coupling element of the waveguide configuration; and projecting a polychromatic image from a decoupling element of the waveguide configuration, the polychromatic image resulting from combination of the first monochromatic image and the second monochromatic image in the waveguide configuration, replicating a plurality of instances of the polychromatic image within the waveguide configuration, wherein projecting the polychromatic image from the decoupling element of the waveguide configuration comprises projecting the plurality of instances of the polychromatic image from the decoupling element.

6. The method of claim 5 , wherein:

the first coupling element receives the emitted first monochromatic image on one of a first surface of the waveguide configuration and a second surface of the waveguide configuration disposed opposite the first surface; and

the decoupling element projects the polychromatic image toward an eyebox from the second surface of the waveguide configuration.

7. A non-transitory computer-readable medium having instructions stored thereon that, when executed by a processing device, cause the processing device to perform operations comprising: directing emission of a first monochromatic image from a first monochromatic emitter array toward a first coupling element of a waveguide configuration; and directing emission of a second monochromatic image from a second monochromatic emitter array toward a second coupling element of the waveguide configuration; and projecting a polychromatic image from a decoupling element of the waveguide configuration, the polychromatic image resulting from combination of the first monochromatic image and the second monochromatic image in the waveguide configuration, wherein the first coupling element comprises a first grating dimensioned to direct the first image laterally within the waveguide configuration; and the second coupling element comprises a second grating dimensioned to direct the second image laterally within the waveguide configuration.

8. The display system of claim 1 , wherein the first and second coupling elements respectively receive the first image and the second image from the first and second monochromatic emitter arrays via an air gap.

9. The display system of claim 1 , wherein

the first coupling element comprises a first grating dimensioned to direct the first image laterally within the waveguide body; and

the second coupling element comprises a second grating dimensioned to direct the second image laterally within the waveguide body.

10. The display system of claim 9 , wherein:

the first grating has a first grating separation distance; and

the second grating has a second grating separation distance different from the first grating separation distance.

11. The display system of claim 1 , wherein the first and second coupling elements each comprise a prism that directs the first image and the second image laterally within the at least one waveguide body.

12. The display system of claim 1 , wherein the at least one waveguide body laterally propagates the first image and the second image via total internal reflection.

13. The display system of claim 1 , wherein:

each of the at least one waveguide body comprises a first surface and a second surface;

the first surface is closer to the eyebox than the second surface; and

a first one or more of the at least one decoupling element is located along the first surface of each of the at least one waveguide body.

14. The display system of claim 13 , wherein a second one or more of the at least one decoupling element is located along the second surface of each of the at least one waveguide body.

15. The display system of claim 1 , wherein the at least one decoupling element projects the received first and second images as a one-dimensional plurality of instances of the projected image.

16. The display system of claim 1 , wherein the at least one decoupling element projects the received first and second images as a two-dimensional plurality of instances of the projected image.

17. The display system of claim 1 , wherein a first one or more of the at least one decoupling element further reflects a portion of the received first and second images toward a second one or more of the at least one decoupling element.
