Abstract

Methods and systems for a media guidance application that provides advanced parental control features such as allowing parents to establish parental controls in a dynamic and individualized manner and allowing parents to track and/or limit the amount of time that a child views media content of a particular type.

Claims (71)

1. A method for implementing parental controls, the method comprising:

identifying first content being output by a user equipment device, wherein the first content is of a first content type indicative of a first common attribute shared by a first plurality of contents;

while the first content is being output:

updating a first counter associated with the first content type with an amount of time the first content is output by the user equipment device, wherein the first counter indicates a total amount of time content of the first content type has been output by one or more user equipment devices; and

incrementing a second counter associated with the first content type, wherein the second counter indicates a number of media assets of the first type that have been output by one or more user equipment devices;

identifying different content being output by the user equipment device, wherein the different content is of a different content type than the first content type, indicative of a different common attribute shared by a different plurality of contents;

while the different content is being output:

updating a first counter associated with the different content type with an amount of time the different content is output by the user equipment device, wherein the first counter associated with the different content type indicates a total amount of time content of the different type has been output by one or more user equipment devices; and

incrementing a second counter associated with the different content type, wherein the second counter associated with the different content type indicates a number of media assets of the different type have been output by one or more user equipment devices;

subsequent to identifying the different content being output, identifying second content;

determining whether the second content is of the first content type;

determining whether the first counter associated with the first content type exceeds a maximum amount of time allowed for outputting content of the first content type and whether the second counter associated with the first content type exceeds a maximum number of allowed media assets of the first content type; and

in response to determining that the second content is of the first content type and that either the first counter associated with the first content type or the second counter associated with the first content type exceeds its respective maximum amount, blocking the second content from output by a user equipment device.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the one or more user equipment devices and the user equipment device are associated with a first user profile, further comprising:

retrieving, from the first user profile, the first counter associated with the first content type and the maximum amount of time allowed for outputting content of the first content type.

3. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

in response to determining that the first counter associated with the first content type exceeds the maximum amount of time allowed for outputting content of the first content type, transmitting a message to a user equipment device associated with a second user profile; and

receiving, from the user equipment device associated with the second user profile, a command to block content of the first content type from output at a user equipment device associated with a first user profile.

4. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

in response to determining that the first counter associated with the first content type exceeds the maximum amount of time allowed for outputting content of the first content type, transmitting a message to a user equipment device associated with a second user profile; and

receiving, from the user equipment device associated with the second user profile, a command to allow content of the first content type to output at a user equipment device associated with a first user profile.

5. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

generating for display, at the user equipment device, a recommendation for an activity;

determining that the activity has been completed; and

in response to determining that the activity has been completed, increasing the maximum amount of time allowed for outputting content of the first content type.

6. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

retrieving a first user profile, wherein the first user profile indicates a non-educational interest; and

determining the first content type based on the non-educational interest.

7. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

in response to determining that the second content is not of the first content type, outputting the second content on the user equipment device.

8. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

receiving, at the user equipment device, a user input requesting media content of the first content type; and

in response to the user input, generating for display a listing for the second content.

9. The method of claim 1 , further comprising generating, for display on the user equipment device, the first counter associated with the first content type.

10. The method of claim 1 , further comprising publishing the first counter associated with the first content type on a social network.

11. A system for implementing parental controls, the system comprising:

control circuitry configured to:

identify first content being output by a user equipment device, wherein the first content is of a first content type indicative of a first common attribute shared by a first plurality of contents;

while the first content is being output:

update a first counter associated with the first content type with an amount of time the first content is output by the user equipment device, wherein the first counter indicates a total amount of time content of the first content type has been output by one or more user equipment devices; and

increment a second counter associated with the first content type, wherein the second counter indicates a number of media assets of the first type that have been output by one or more user equipment devices;

identify different content being output by the user equipment device, wherein the different content is of a different content type than the first content type, indicative of a different common attribute shared by a different plurality of contents;

while the different content is being output:

update a first counter associated with the different content type with an amount of time the different content is output by the user equipment device, wherein the first counter associated with the different content type indicates a total amount of time content of the different type has been output by one or more user equipment devices; and

increment a second counter associated with the different content type, wherein the second counter associated with the different content type indicates a number of media assets of the different type that have been output by one or more user equipment devices;

subsequent to identifying the first content being output, identify second content;

determine whether the second content is of the first content type;

determine whether the first counter associated with the first content type exceeds a maximum amount of time allowed for outputting content of the first content type and whether the second counter associated with the first content type exceeds a maximum number of allowed media assets of the first content type; and

in response to determining that the second content is of the first content type and that either the first counter associated with the first content type or the second counter associated with the first content type exceeds its respective maximum amount, block the second content from output by a user equipment device.

12. The system of claim 11 , wherein the one or more user equipment devices and the user equipment device are associated with a first user profile, and wherein the control circuitry is further configured to:

retrieve, from the first user profile, the first counter associated with the first content type and the maximum amount of time allowed for outputting content of the first content type.

13. The system of claim 11 , wherein the control circuitry is further configured to:

in response to determining that the first counter associated with the first content type exceeds the maximum amount of time allowed for outputting content of the first content type, transmit a message to a user equipment device associated with a second user profile; and

receive, from the user equipment device associated with the second user profile, a command to block content of the first content type from output at a user equipment device associated with a first user profile.

14. The system of claim 11 , wherein the control circuitry is further configured to:

in response to determining that the first counter associated with the first content type exceeds the maximum amount of time allowed for outputting content of the first content type, transmit a message to a user equipment device associated with a second user profile; and

receive, from the user equipment device associated with the second user profile, a command to allow content of the first content type to output at a user equipment device associated with a first user profile.

15. The system of claim 11 , wherein the control circuitry is further configured to:

generate for display, at the user equipment device, a recommendation for an activity;

determine that the activity has been completed; and

in response to determining that the activity has been completed, increase the maximum amount of time allowed for outputting content of the first content type.

16. The system of claim 11 , wherein the control circuitry is further configured to:

retrieve a first user profile, wherein the first user profile indicates a non-educational interest; and

determine the first content type based on the non-educational interest.

17. The system of claim 11 , wherein the control circuitry is further configured to:

output the second content on the user equipment device in response to determining that the second content is not of the first content type.

18. The system of claim 11 , wherein the control circuitry is further configured to:

receive, at the user equipment device, a user input requesting media content of the first content type; and

in response to the user input, generate for display a listing for the second content.

19. The system of claim 11 , wherein the control circuitry is further configured to generate, for display on the user equipment device, the first counter associated with the first content type.
