Abstract

A method of over-seeding dormant warm season grasses, including over-seeding the warm season grass with Turf Type Festulolium (American Ryegrass) such that the American Ryegrass will provide a green cover during the winter months but will die out when the temperatures increase to the point which allow the warm-season grass to regrow. A method maintain green coverage of turf year-round including planting a warm season grass, and over-seeding the warm season grass with American Ryegrass. The method where the American Ryegrass is selected from the group consisting of breeder's codes: APMT001, APMT002, APMT003, APMT004, APMT005, APMT006, APMT007, APMT008, APMT009, APMT010, and APMT011.

Claims (18)

1. A method of over-seeding dormant warm season grasses, comprising the steps of over-seeding the warm season grass with Turf Type Festulolium braunii (American Ryegrass) such that the American Ryegrass will provide a green cover during the winter months but will die out when the temperatures increase to the point which allow the warm-season grass to regrow.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the lack of heat tolerance of American Ryegrass allows for a smooth transition for the warm-season grass.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the warm season grass is overseeded prior to the onset of cold weather.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the warm season grass is scalped prior to the overseeding step.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the warm season grass is Patriot bermudagrass.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the American Ryegrass is selected from the list consisting of: AMPT001; AMPT002; AMPT003; AMPT005; AMPT006; AMPT007; AMPT008; AMPT009; AMPT010; and AMPT011.

7. A method maintain green coverage of turf year-round comprising

planting a warm season grass, and

over-seeding the warm season grass with Festulolium braunii (American Ryegrass), and

wherein the American Ryegrass is selected from the group consisting of breeder's codes: APMT001, APMT002, APMT003, APMT004, APMT005, APMT006, APMT007, APMT008, APMT009, APMT010, and APMT011.

8. The method of claim 7 , wherein the American Ryegrass is selected from the group consisting of breeder's codes: APMT002, APMT003, APMT004, APMT005, APMT006, APMT007, APMT008.

9. The method of claim 8 , wherein the American Ryegrass is breeder's code APMT005.

10. The method of claim 7 , wherein the grasses are planted on a golf course.

11. The method of claim 7 , wherein the warm season grass is Bermuda grass.

12. The method of claim 7 , further comprising scalping the warm season grass to 0.5 inches before over-seeding.

13. The method of claim 12 , wherein the American Ryegrass is over-seeded at a rate of 12 pounds per 1000 square feet.

14. The method of claim 13 , further comprising irrigating twice a day for two weeks after over-seeding.

15. The method of claim 14 , further comprising applying nitrogen.
