Abstract

A method of forming a chemical delivery device with an active chemical includes generating halftoned image data using a stochastic halftone screen and with reference to a concentration parameter for the active chemical. The method also includes ejecting a chemical carrier including the active chemical into a portion of a plurality of cavities formed in the chemical delivery device based on the halftoned image data to produce the chemical delivery device with a concentration of the active chemical corresponding to the concentration parameter.

Claims (18)

1. A chemical delivery device formed with a three-dimensional object printer comprising:

a substrate;

a plurality of cavities formed in the substrate; and

a first portion of the plurality of cavities formed in a first region of the substrate containing a predetermined amount of a first chemical carrier that contains a first active chemical, the predetermined amount of the first chemical carrier in the first portion of the plurality of cavities corresponds to a first concentration parameter for the first active chemical in the first region of the substrate and a number of cavities in the first portion of cavities is less than a total number of cavities in the plurality of cavities.

2. The chemical delivery device of claim 1 , the substrate further comprising:

a plurality of layers, walls of the cavities in each layer being formed with an excipient material.

3. The chemical delivery device of claim 2 wherein the excipient material is a powdered excipient material; and

the walls of the cavities are formed with a liquid binder and the powdered excipient material.

4. The chemical delivery device of claim 2 wherein the excipient material is a cured liquid excipient material that forms the walls of the cavities.

5. The chemical delivery device of claim 1 further comprising:

a plurality of additional portions of cavities in the plurality of cavities formed in the substrate that are different than the first portion of cavities, each additional portion of cavities being located in a region of the substrate that is different than the first region of the substrate, each additional portion of cavities containing a predetermined amount of the first chemical carrier that contains the first active chemical, the predetermined amount of the first chemical carrier in each additional portion of cavities in the plurality of additional portions of cavities corresponding to a concentration parameter for the first active chemical in each region of the substrate in which each additional portion of cavities is located to produce a concentration gradient of the first active chemical through each region of the substrate where the additional portions of the cavities are located.

6. The chemical delivery device of claim 5 wherein the concentration parameter for each region where each additional portion of the cavities is located is different than the concentration parameters for the other regions where the other additional portions of cavities are located.

7. The chemical delivery device of claim 1 further comprising:

a second portion of the plurality of cavities formed in the first region of the substrate containing a predetermined amount of a second chemical carrier that contains a second active chemical, the predetermined amount of the second chemical carrier in the second portion of the plurality of cavities corresponds to a second concentration parameter for the second active chemical in the first region of the substrate.

8. The chemical delivery device of claim 7 wherein the first concentration parameter is different than the second concentration parameter.

9. The chemical delivery device of claim 7 wherein the first portion of cavities in the plurality of cavities formed in the first region that contain the first chemical carrier are mutually exclusive of the second portion of the plurality of cavities formed in the first region that contain the second chemical carrier.

10. The chemical delivery device of claim 1 wherein any cavity in the plurality of cavities that does not contain the first chemical carrier contains excipient material.

11. The chemical delivery device of claim 2 wherein a layer of excipient material is placed over the cavities containing the first chemical carrier to cover the cavities.
