Abstract

Display device ON/OFF detection methods and apparatus are disclosed. Example metering apparatus disclosed herein include a current detector to measure an electrical current drawn by a monitored media device from a power source, and an audio sensor. Disclosed example metering apparatus also include a processor to compare the electrical current to a first threshold and to compare a level associated with audio sensed by the audio sensor to a second threshold to determine whether the monitored media device is ON or OFF.

Claims (33)

1. A metering apparatus comprising:

a current detector to measure an electrical current drawn by a monitored media device from a power source;

an audio sensor to be positioned to sense audio from the monitored media device; and

a processor to compare the electrical current to a first threshold and to compare a level associated with the audio sensed by the audio sensor to a second threshold to determine whether the monitored media device is ON or OFF.

2. The metering apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the processor is to determine the monitored media device is ON when the electrical current exceeds the first threshold and comparison of the level associated with the audio to the second threshold indicates the audio sensed by the audio sensor corresponds to at least one of silence or background noise.

3. The metering apparatus of claim 2 , wherein the level associated with the audio is an audio gain level adjusted by an automatic gain control algorithm, and the comparison of the level associated with the audio to the second threshold indicates the audio sensed by the audio sensor corresponds to at least one of silence or background noise when the audio gain level exceeds the second threshold.

4. The metering apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the processor is to determine the monitored media device is OFF when the electrical current does not exceed the first threshold and comparison of the level associated with the audio to the second threshold indicates the audio sensed by the audio sensor does not correspond to at least one of silence or background noise.

5. The metering apparatus of claim 4 , wherein the level associated with the audio is an audio gain level adjusted by an automatic gain control algorithm, and the comparison of the level associated with the audio to the second threshold indicates the audio sensed by the audio sensor does not correspond to at least one of silence or background noise when the audio gain level does not exceed the second threshold.

6. The metering apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the processor is to:

detect audio codes in the audio sensed by the audio sensor; and

determine whether the monitored media device is ON or OFF based on (i) comparison of the electrical current to the first threshold, (ii) comparison of the level associated with the audio sensed by the audio sensor to the second threshold, and (iii) whether a valid audio code is detected in the audio sensed by the audio sensor.

7. The metering apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the level associated with the audio is an audio gain level adjusted by an automatic gain control algorithm.

8. At least one computer readable storage device or storage disk comprising computer readable instructions that, when executed, cause a processor to at least:

compare a measured electrical current drawn by a monitored media device from a power source to a first threshold;

compare a second threshold to a level associated with audio sensed by an audio sensor to be positioned to sense the audio from the monitored media device; and

determine whether the monitored media device is ON or OFF based on comparison of the measured electrical current to the first threshold and comparison of the level associated with the audio to the second threshold.

9. The at least one computer readable storage device or storage disk of claim 8 , wherein the instructions cause the processor to determine the monitored media device is ON when the electrical current exceeds the first threshold and the comparison of the level associated with the audio to the second threshold indicates the audio sensed by the audio sensor corresponds to at least one of silence or background noise.

10. The at least one computer readable storage device or storage disk of claim 9 , wherein the level associated with the audio is an audio gain level adjusted by an automatic gain control algorithm, and the comparison of the level associated with the audio to the second threshold indicates the audio sensed by the audio sensor corresponds to at least one of silence or background noise when the audio gain level exceeds the second threshold.

11. The at least one computer readable storage device or storage disk of claim 8 , wherein the instructions cause the processor to determine the monitored media device is OFF when the electrical current does not exceed the first threshold and the comparison of the level associated with the audio to the second threshold indicates the audio sensed by the audio sensor does not correspond to at least one of silence or background noise.

12. The at least one computer readable storage device or storage disk of claim 11 , wherein the level associated with the audio is an audio gain level adjusted by an automatic gain control algorithm, and the comparison of the level associated with the audio to the second threshold indicates the audio sensed by the audio sensor does not correspond to at least one of silence or background noise when the audio gain level does not exceed the second threshold.

13. The at least one computer readable storage device or storage disk of claim 8 , wherein the instructions cause the processor to:

detect audio codes in the audio sensed by the audio sensor; and

determine whether the monitored media device is ON or OFF based on (i) the comparison of the electrical current to the first threshold, (ii) the comparison of the level associated with the audio sensed by the audio sensor to the second threshold, and (iii) whether a valid audio code is detected in the audio sensed by the audio sensor.

14. The at least one computer readable storage device or storage disk of claim 8 , wherein the level associated with the audio is an audio gain level adjusted by an automatic gain control algorithm.

15. A metering apparatus comprising:

means for measuring an electrical current drawn by a monitored media device from a power source;

means for sensing audio from the monitored media device, the means for sensing audio to be positionable to sense the audio from the monitored media device; and

means for determining whether the monitored media device is ON or OFF based on comparison of the measured electrical current to a first threshold and comparison of a level associated with the audio to a second threshold.

16. The metering apparatus of claim 15 , wherein the means for determining is to determine the monitored media device is ON when the electrical current exceeds the first threshold and the comparison of the level associated with the audio to the second threshold indicates the audio sensed by the means for sensing audio corresponds to at least one of silence or background noise.

17. The metering apparatus of claim 16 , wherein the level associated with the audio is an audio gain level adjusted by an automatic gain control algorithm, and the comparison of the level associated with the audio to the second threshold indicates the audio sensed by the means for sensing audio corresponds to at least one of silence or background noise when the audio gain level exceeds the second threshold.

18. The metering apparatus of claim 15 , wherein the means for determining is to determine the monitored media device is OFF when the electrical current does not exceed the first threshold and the comparison of the level associated with the audio to the second threshold indicates the audio sensed by the means for sensing audio does not correspond to at least one of silence or background noise.

19. The metering apparatus of claim 18 , wherein the level associated with the audio is an audio gain level adjusted by an automatic gain control algorithm, and the comparison of the level associated with the audio to the second threshold indicates the audio sensed by the means for sensing audio does not correspond to at least one of silence or background noise when the audio gain level does not exceed the second threshold.

20. The metering apparatus of claim 15 , wherein the means for determining is to determine whether the monitored media device is ON or OFF based on (i) the comparison of the electrical current to the first threshold, (ii) the comparison of the level associated with the audio sensed by the means for sensing audio to the second threshold, and (iii) whether a valid audio code is detected in the audio sensed by the means for sensing audio.
