Abstract

At least one embodiment is directed to a method for automatically activating ambient sound pass-through in an earphone in response to a detected keyword in the ambient sound field of the earphone user, the steps of the method comprising at least receiving at least one ambient sound microphone (ASM) signal; receiving at least one audio content (AC) signal; and comparing the ASM signal to a keyword and if the ASM signal matches a keyword then an AC gain is created.

Claims (45)

1. A method for automatically activating ambient sound pass-through in an earphone in response to a detected keyword in the ambient sound field of the earphone user, the steps of the method comprising:

receiving at least one ambient sound microphone (ASM) signal;

receiving at least one audio content (AC) signal; and

comparing the ASM signal to a keyword and if the ASM signal matches a keyword then an AC gain is created, wherein the keyword is identified in the ASM signal when temporal or spectral patterns of the keyword and the ASM signal match within a threshold average value.

2. The method according to claim 1 , where if the ASM signal does not match a keyword then an audio content signal gain is created.

3. The method according to claim 1 further including:

applying the AC gain to the received AC signal to generate a modified AC signal.

4. The method according to claim 1 further including:

applying the ASM gain to the received ASM signal to generate a modified ASM signal.

5. The method according to claim 3 further including:

applying the ASM gain to the received ASM signal to generate a modified ASM signal.

6. The method according to claim 5 further including:

mixing the modified AC signal and modified ASM signals to generated a mixed signal.

7. The method according to claim 6 further including:

sending the mixed signal to a speaker.

8. The method according to claim 7 where the keywords include at least one of a first name, a surname, a familiar or truncated form of the first name or surname, a nickname for the earphone wearer, and an emergency keyword.

9. A method for automatically activating ambient sound pass-through in an earphone in response to a detected keyword in the ambient sound field of the earphone user, the steps of the method comprising:

receiving at least one ambient sound microphone (ASM) signal;

receiving at least one audio content (AC) signal; and

comparing the ASM signal to a keyword and if the ASM signal matches a keyword then an AC gain is created, where the mixing step includes adjusting the AC gain at a rate between 5-30 dB/sec if increasing and the range −5 to −30 dB/sec if decreasing;

applying the AC gain to the received AC signal to generate a modified AC signal;

applying the ASM gain to the received ASM signal to generate a modified ASM signal;

mixing the modified AC signal and modified ASM signals to generated a mixed signal; and

sending the mixed signal to a speaker.

10. The method according to claim 7 , further including the step of:

matching a detected keyword with an associated phone number; and calling the phone number.

11. A method for automatically activating ambient sound pass-through in an earphone in response to a detected keyword in the ambient sound field of the earphone user, the steps of the method comprising:

receiving at least one ambient sound microphone (ASM) signal;

receiving at least one audio content (AC) signal; and

comparing the ASM signal to a keyword and if the ASM signal matches a keyword then an AC gain is created, where the mixing step includes adjusting the AC gain at a rate between 5-30 dB/sec if increasing and the range −5 to −30 dB/sec if decreasing;

applying the AC gain to the received AC signal to generate a modified AC signal;

applying the ASM gain to the received ASM signal to generate a modified ASM signal;

mixing the modified AC signal and modified ASM signals to generated a mixed signal; and

sending the mixed signal to a speaker, where the mixing step includes adjusting the ASM gain at a slew rate between 5-30 dB/sec if increasing and the range −5 to −30 dB/sec if decreasing.

12. The method according to claim 11 , where the ASM gain is increased if the AC gain is decreased.

13. The method according to claim 12 , where the ASM gain is decreased if the AC gain is increased.

14. A device capable of receiving and identifying acoustic keywords comprising: a microphone;

a processor; and

processor readable memory, where acoustic characteristics of at least five verbal keywords are stored in the processor readable memory, where the processor is configured to identify an acoustic keyword signal by comparing the acoustic characteristics of the at least five verbal keywords to an acoustic signal sent from the microphone, wherein the acoustic keyword signal is identified in the acoustic signal when temporal or spectral patterns of at least one of the five verbal keywords and the acoustic signal match within a threshold average value, where the processor has been configured to initiate at least one of the following based upon the keyword identified: initiate a phone call; initiate an increase gain to the acoustic signal; and initiate a decrease gain to the acoustic signal.

15. The device according to claim 14 where the device is a wireless earphone.

16. The device according to claim 15 , where the processor is contained in a phone that wirelessly connects to the earphone.

17. The device according to claim 15 , where the processor readable memory is RAM stored on the earphone.

18. The device according to claim 16 , where the processor readable memory is RAM stored on the phone.

19. The device according to claim 15 , where the earphone additionally includes: an occluding portion, where the occluding portion provides a level of sound isolation between an ear canal region and an ambient environment.

20. The device according to claim 19 , where the occluding portion is an eartip that provides a sound isolation at least 10 dB when the eartip is inserted into an ear canal.
