Abstract

Disclosed herein are several embodiments of a negative pressure appliance and methods of using the same in the treatment of wounds. Some embodiments are directed towards wound dressings comprising a liquid and gas permeable transmission layer, an absorbent layer for absorbing wound exudate, the absorbent layer overlying the transmission layer, a gas impermeable cover layer overlying the absorbent layer and comprising a first orifice, wherein the cover layer is moisture vapor permeable. Some embodiments are directed to improved fluidic connectors or suction adapters for connecting to a wound site, for example using softer, kink-free conformable suction adapters.

Claims (47)

1. An apparatus to provide suction to a wound site comprising:

a wound dressing comprising:

a transmission layer configured to transmit wound exudate; and

a cover layer overlying the transmission layer and comprising an orifice;

a fluidic connector attached to the wound dressing comprising:

an upper film layer and a lower film layer each comprising a proximal end and a distal end; and

a fluid passage surrounded by the upper film layer and the lower film layer and configured to be in fluid communication with a source of negative pressure, the fluid passage comprising a porous material encapsulated between the upper film layer and the lower film layer; and

a sealing surface at the distal end of the lower layer, the sealing surface comprising one or more apertures;

a spacer layer; and

a filter,

wherein:

the sealing surface of the fluidic connector is positioned over the cover layer of the wound dressing with the one or more apertures in the sealing surface positioned over the orifice in the cover layer;

the filter is positioned above the orifice of the cover layer and above the sealing surface; and

the spacer layer is positioned below the filter and the sealing surface, wherein the spacer layer is configured to support the filter and create a gap between the filter and the transmission layer and extends from below the filter to below an outer edge of the upper film layer of the fluidic connector.

2. The apparatus according to claim 1 , wherein the filter is adhered to the top of the spacer layer.

3. The apparatus according to claim 1 , wherein the sealing surface and the orifice are located in an off-center position in relation to the wound dressing.

4. The apparatus according to claim 1 , wherein the orifice is directly connected to the transmission layer.

5. The apparatus according to claim 1 , wherein the filter is configured to substantially prevent wound exudate from entering the fluidic connector.

6. The apparatus according to claim 1 , wherein the transmission layer comprises foam.

7. The apparatus according to claim 1 , wherein the fluid passage is constructed from a flexible compliant material such that fluid can pass through it if the porous material is kinked or folded over.

8. The apparatus according to claim 1 , wherein the porous material comprises one or more materials selected from the list consisting of foams, meshes, 3D knitted fabrics and non-woven materials.

9. The apparatus according to claim 1 , wherein the upper film layer and the lower film layer each comprise polyethylene, polyvinyl chloride, silicone or polyurethane having a hardness of 30 to 90 on the Shore A scale.

10. The apparatus according to claim 1 , further comprising a source of negative pressure configured to be fluidically connected to the fluidic connector.

11. A negative pressure therapy apparatus comprising:

a fluidic connector comprising:

a top layer;

a bottom layer comprising an elongate bridge portion, an enlarged sealing portion and one or more apertures; and

a spacer layer positioned between the top layer and the bottom layer;

wherein said top layer and said bottom layer are sealed together;

an additional layer below the bottom layer of the fluidic connector;

a wound dressing connected to the fluidic connector, the wound dressing comprising:

a cover layer comprising an orifice wherein the fluidic connector is sealed to the wound dressing and is configured such that the one or more apertures in the bottom layer of the fluidic connector is aligned with the orifice in the cover layer of the wound dressing;

an absorbent layer; and

an acquisition distribution layer configured to horizontally wick wound exudate as it is absorbed upwardly through the wound dressing; and

a filter above the cover layer and above the additional layer, the filter located adjacent the one or more apertures in the bottom layer and adjacent the orifice in the cover layer;

wherein the additional layer extends from below the filter to below an outer edge of the top layer of the fluidic connector.

12. The apparatus according to claim 11 , wherein the wound dressing further comprises a wound contact layer, and wherein the acquisition distribution layer is positioned between the wound contact layer and the absorbent layer.

13. The apparatus according to claim 11 , wherein the wound dressing further comprises a transmission layer between the wound contact layer and the acquisition distribution layer.

14. The apparatus according to claim 11 , wherein the wound dressing further comprises an obscuring layer between the cover layer and the absorbent layer.

15. The apparatus according to claim 11 , wherein the acquisition distribution layer comprises viscose, polyester, polypropylene, cellulose, or combination thereof.

16. The apparatus according to claim 11 , wherein the absorbent layer comprises a superabsorbent material.

17. The apparatus according to claim 11 , wherein the absorbent layer comprises a foam.

18. The apparatus according to claim 11 , wherein the absorbent layer is positioned above the acquisition distribution layer.

19. The apparatus according to claim 11 , wherein the spacer layer comprises one or more materials selected from the list consisting of foams, meshes, 3D knitted fabrics and non-woven materials.

20. The apparatus according to claim 11 , wherein the filter is positioned below the spacer layer.

21. The apparatus according to claim 11 , further comprising a source of negative pressure configured to be fluidically connected to the fluidic connector.

22. The apparatus according to claim 11 , wherein the additional layer is adhered to and underlies the filter.
