Claims (49)

1. A gaming system comprising:

a display device; and

a game controller executing instructions stored on a memory, which, when executed by the game controller, cause the game controller to at least:

conduct a base game, using a plurality of base game reels;

detect a trigger condition in the base game, wherein the trigger condition includes a quantity of symbols;

replace a number of base game reels of the plurality of base game reels with a number of feature game reels based on the quantity of symbols;

initiate a feature game using the number of feature game reels in response to detecting the trigger condition; and

conduct a round of the feature game with the replaced feature game reels being active during the round of the feature game, wherein any remaining base game reels are inactive during the round of the feature game.

2. The gaming system of claim 1 , wherein the instructions further cause the game controller to replace the number of base game reels with feature game reels equal to the quantity of symbols.

3. The gaming system of claim 1 , wherein the trigger condition comprises a game round outcome that includes a plurality of scatter symbols.

4. The gaming system of claim 3 , wherein the trigger condition includes a predetermined minimum number of scatter symbols of the plurality of scatter symbols.

5. The gaming system of claim 1 , wherein the feature game includes a plurality of feature game rounds, and wherein the instructions further cause the game controller to:

conduct a feature game round of the plurality of feature game rounds;

detect a bonus level trigger condition in the feature game;

unlock a bonus level of a plurality of bonus levels based on the bonus level trigger condition, the bonus level including a bonus award;

apply the bonus award to a subsequent feature game round of the plurality of feature game rounds; and

determine an outcome of the subsequent feature game round.

6. The gaming system of claim 5 , wherein the instructions further cause the game controller to determine a number of the plurality of bonus levels based on an outcome of one or more feature game rounds.

7. A method of conducting a wagering game, said method comprising:

conducting a base game on a plurality of base game reels of an electronic gaming machine;

detecting a trigger condition in the base game, wherein the trigger condition includes a quantity of symbols;

replacing a number of base game reels of the plurality of base game reels with a number of feature game reels based on the quantity of symbols;

initiating a feature game using the number of feature game reels in response to detecting the trigger condition; and

conducting a round of the feature game with the replaced feature game reels being active during the round of the feature game and with any remaining base game reels being inactive during the round of the feature game.

8. The method of claim 7 further comprising replacing the number of base game reels with feature game reels equal to the quantity of symbols.

9. The method of claim 7 , wherein the trigger condition comprises a game round outcome that includes a plurality of scatter symbols.

10. The method of claim 9 , wherein the trigger condition includes a predetermined minimum number of scatter symbols of the plurality of scatter symbols.

11. The method of claim 7 , wherein the feature game includes a plurality of feature game rounds, and wherein the method further comprises:

conducting a feature game round of the plurality of feature game rounds;

detecting a bonus level trigger condition in the feature game;

unlocking a bonus level of a plurality of bonus levels based on the bonus level trigger condition, the bonus level including a bonus award;

applying the bonus award to a subsequent feature game round of the plurality of feature game rounds; and

determining an outcome of the subsequent feature game round.

12. A game controller for a gaming system configured to execute instructions stored on a memory, which, when executed by the game controller, cause the game controller to at least:

conduct a base game on a plurality of base game reels;

detect a trigger condition in the base game, wherein the trigger condition includes a quantity of symbols;

replace a number of base game reels of the plurality of base game reels with a number of feature game reels based on the quantity of symbols;

initiate a feature game using the number of feature game reels in response to detecting the trigger condition; and

conduct a round of the feature game with the replaced feature game reels being active during the round of the feature game, wherein any remaining base game reels are inactive during the round of the feature game.

13. The game controller of claim 12 , wherein the instructions further cause the game controller to replace the number of base game reels with feature game reels equal to the quantity of symbols.

14. The game controller of claim 12 , wherein the trigger condition comprises a game round outcome that includes a plurality of scatter symbols.

15. The game controller of claim 14 , wherein the trigger condition includes a predetermined minimum number of scatter symbols of the plurality of scatter symbols.

16. The game controller of claim 12 , wherein the feature game includes a plurality of feature game rounds, and wherein the instructions further cause the game controller to:

conduct a feature game round of the plurality of feature game rounds;

detect a bonus level trigger condition in the feature game;

unlock a bonus level of a plurality of bonus levels based on the bonus level trigger condition, the bonus level including a bonus award;

apply the bonus award to a subsequent feature game round of the plurality of feature game rounds; and

determine an outcome of the subsequent feature game round.
