Abstract

Methods and control apparatus are presented for controlling supply of electrical power to a micro-grid power system, in which a master controller automatically rebalances the micro-grid by changing an activation state of one or more loads and/or activating and deactivating individual power supplies to preferentially activate non-fuel consuming power supplies and deactivate fuel consuming power supplies so as to minimize fuel consumption for the micro-grid power system.

Claims (30)

1. An apparatus for controlling supply of electrical power to a micro-grid power system including a plurality of loads disconnected from utility power and individually capable of consuming electrical power when activated, and a plurality of power supplies operatively coupled to provide electrical power to the micro-grid when activated, the apparatus comprising:

a communications interface operative to exchange communications messaging with at least some of the loads or a load control device coupled with a corresponding load; and

at least one processor programmed to:

determine a micro-grid load profile for the micro-grid power system based at least partially on a plurality of consumption profiles, each individual consumption profile corresponding to a particular one of the plurality of loads,

determine an active reserve power level for the micro-grid power system based at least partially on the consumption profiles, and

set an activation state of one or more of the plurality of loads based at least partially on power supply information, the determined micro-grid load profile and the determined active reserve power level.

2. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the consumption profiles individually correspond to at least some of the plurality of loads via the communications interface.

3. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the power supply information includes at least one power supply profile and power supply data for at least some of the power.

4. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the at least one processor is programmed to set the activation state of one or more of the plurality of loads by delaying activation of one or more specific ones of the loads that are currently deactivated for which a load activation request has been received until either the supply of electrical power to the micro-grid power system has been rebalanced to accommodate the requested activation or a determination has been made that a current supply of electrical power to the micro-grid power system is sufficient to accommodate the requested activation.

5. The apparatus of claim 4 , wherein the at least one processor is programmed to set the activation state of one or more of the plurality of loads by: for at least one received load activation request, giving permission to activate a partial requested load; and delaying permission for activation for a remainder of the requested load until the micro-grid power system is rebalanced.

6. The apparatus of claim 4 , wherein the at least one processor is programmed to set the activation state of one or more of the plurality of loads by deactivating at least one of the plurality of loads.

7. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the individual consumption profiles indicate a base load level and a required reserve capacity load level for the corresponding load.

8. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the at least one processor is programmed to set the activation state of one or more of the plurality of loads by: for at least one received load activation request, giving permission to activate a partial requested load; and delaying permission for activation for a remainder of the requested load until the micro-grid power system is rebalanced.

9. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the at least one processor is programmed to set the activation state of one or more of the plurality of loads by deactivating at least one of the plurality of loads.

10. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the at least one processor is programmed to control peak shaving in the micro-grid.

11. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the at least one processor is programmed to set an activation state of one or more of the plurality of power supplies based at least partially on the power supply information, the determined micro-grid load profile and the determined active reserve power level.

12. The apparatus of claim 11 , wherein the consumption profiles individually correspond to at least some of the plurality of loads via the communications interface.

13. The apparatus of claim 11 , wherein the power supply information includes at least one power supply profile and power supply data for at least some of the power.

14. The apparatus of claim 11 , wherein the at least one processor is programmed to set the activation state of one or more of the plurality of loads by delaying activation of one or more specific ones of the loads that are currently deactivated for which a load activation request has been received until either the supply of electrical power to the micro-grid power system has been rebalanced to accommodate the requested activation or a determination has been made that a current supply of electrical power to the micro-grid power system is sufficient to accommodate the requested activation.

15. The apparatus of claim 14 , wherein the at least one processor is programmed to set the activation state of one or more of the plurality of loads by: for at least one received load activation request, giving permission to activate a partial requested load; and delaying permission for activation for a remainder of the requested load until the micro-grid power system is rebalanced.

16. The apparatus of claim 11 , wherein the at least one processor is programmed to set the activation state of one or more of the plurality of loads by: for at least one received load activation request, giving permission to activate a partial requested load; and delaying permission for activation for a remainder of the requested load until the micro-grid power system is rebalanced.

17. An apparatus for controlling supply of electrical power to a plurality of loads individually capable of consuming electrical power when activated, the apparatus comprising:

a communications interface operative to exchange communications messaging with at least some of the loads or a load control device coupled with a corresponding load; and

at least one processor programmed to:

determine a micro-grid load profile for the micro-grid power system based at least partially on a plurality of consumption profiles, each individual consumption profile corresponding to a particular one of the plurality of loads,

determine an active reserve power level for the micro-grid power system based at least partially on the consumption profiles, and

set an activation state of one or more of the plurality of loads based at least partially on power supply information, the determined micro-grid load profile and the determined active reserve power level.

18. The apparatus of claim 17 , wherein the consumption profiles individually correspond to at least some of the plurality of loads via the communications interface.

19. The apparatus of claim 17 , wherein the power supply information includes at least one power supply profile and power supply data for at least some of the power.

20. The apparatus of claim 17 , wherein the at least one processor is programmed to set the activation state of one or more of the plurality of loads by: for at least one received load activation request, giving permission to activate a partial requested load; and delaying permission for activation for a remainder of the requested load until the micro-grid power system is rebalanced.
