Abstract

A method for producing a surgical instrument is disclosed. The method comprises obtaining a handle, wherein the handle comprises a distal end comprising a shaft interface surface and a first set of magnetic elements. The method further comprises obtaining a shaft, wherein the shaft comprises a proximal end comprising a handle interface surface, a second set of magnetic elements, and a third set of magnetic elements. The method further comprises attaching the shaft to the handle, wherein the shaft interface surface is configured to engage the shaft at the handle interface surface, wherein an attractive magnetic force is configured to pull the handle towards the shaft when the first set of magnetic elements interact with the second magnetic elements, and wherein a repulsive magnetic force is configured to repel the handle from the shaft when the first set of magnetic elements interacts with the third set of magnetic elements.

Claims (36)

1. A method of producing a surgical instrument, comprising:

obtaining a handle, wherein the handle comprises a distal end, and wherein the distal end comprises a shaft interface surface and a first set of magnetic elements; and

obtaining a shaft, wherein the shaft comprises a proximal end, wherein the proximal end comprises:

a handle interface surface;

a second set of magnetic elements; and

a third set of magnetic elements; and

attaching the shaft to said handle, wherein the shaft interface surface is configured to engage the shaft at the handle interface surface, wherein an attractive magnetic force is configured to pull the handle towards the shaft when the first set of magnetic elements interact with the second set of magnetic elements, and wherein a repulsive magnetic force is configured to repel the handle from the shaft when the first set of magnetic elements interacts with the third set of magnetic elements.

2. The method of claim 1 , further comprising placing the surgical instrument in communication with a surgical hub and downloading operational data from the surgical hub.

3. The method of claim 2 , wherein the operational data comprises a first set of operational parameters when the first set of magnetic elements interact with the second set of magnetic elements, and wherein the operational data comprises a second set of operational parameters when the first set of magnetic elements interact with the third set of magnetic elements, and wherein the first set of operational parameters is different than the second set of operational parameters.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the first set of magnetic elements, the second set of magnetic elements, and the third set of magnetic elements comprise permanent magnets.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the first set of magnetic elements, the second set of magnetic elements, and the third set of magnetic elements comprise electromagnets.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the first set of magnetic elements, the second set of magnetic elements, and the third set of magnetic elements comprise permanent magnets and electromagnets.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein the first set of magnetic elements is fixedly mounted to the shaft interface surface.

8. The method of claim 1 , wherein the magnetic attractive force is configured to align the handle and the shaft by rotating the first set of magnetic elements towards the second set of magnetic elements.

9. A method for producing a surgical instrument, comprising:

obtaining a housing, wherein the housing comprises a distal end, and wherein the distal end comprises a shaft interface surface and a first set of magnetic elements;

obtaining a shaft, wherein the shaft comprises a proximal end, wherein the proximal end comprises:

a housing interface surface; and

a second set of magnetic elements; and

aligning the shaft with respect to the housing, wherein the shaft interface surface is configured to engage the shaft at the housing interface surface, wherein an attractive magnetic force is configured to pull the housing towards the shaft when the first set of magnetic elements interacts with the second set of magnetic elements.

10. The method of claim 9 , further comprising placing the surgical instrument in communication with a surgical hub and downloading operational data from the surgical hub.

11. The method of claim 10 , wherein the operational data comprises a first set of operational parameters when the first set of magnetic elements interact with the second set of magnetic elements, and wherein the operational data comprises a second set of operational parameters when the first set of magnetic elements do not interact with the second set of magnetic elements, and wherein the first set of operational parameters is different than the second set of operational parameters.

12. The method of claim 9 , wherein the first set of magnetic elements and the second set of magnetic elements comprise permanent magnets.

13. The method of claim 9 , wherein the first set of magnetic elements and the second set of magnetic elements comprise electromagnets.

14. The method of claim 9 , wherein the first set of magnetic elements and the second set of magnetic elements comprise permanent magnets and electromagnets.

15. The method of claim 9 , wherein the first set of magnetic elements is fixedly mounted to the shaft interface surface.

16. A method for producing a modular surgical instrument, comprising:

obtaining a housing, wherein the housing comprises:

a first array of magnetic elements; and

an attachment interface;

obtaining a shaft assembly, wherein the shaft assembly is operably attachable to the attachment interface, and wherein the shaft assembly comprises a second array of magnetic elements; and

attaching the shaft assembly to the housing, wherein the first array of magnetic elements and the second array of magnetic elements co-operate to generate a repulsive magnetic force which repulses the shaft assembly from the attachment interface when the shaft assembly is positioned on a first side of a field threshold, and wherein the first array of magnetic elements and the second array of magnetic elements co-operate to generate an attractive magnetic force which pulls the shaft assembly towards the attachment interface when the shaft assembly is positioned on a second side of the field threshold.

17. The method of claim 16 , further comprising placing the modular surgical instrument in communication with a surgical hub and downloading operational data from the surgical hub.

18. The method of claim 17 , wherein the operational data comprises a first set of operational parameters when the shaft assembly is positioned on the first side of the field threshold, and wherein the operational data comprises a second set of operational parameters when the shaft assembly is positioned on the second side of the field threshold, and wherein the first set of operational parameters is different than the second set of operational parameters.
