Abstract

In an example, a cubic press is described having press bases with spacers disposed between adjacent press bases. Sets of two or more tie bars are also disposed between adjacent press bases. The tie bars are placed in a state of compression while the spacers are placed in a state of compression. During operation, the press bases may become displaced relative to one another such that additional tension is experienced by the tie bars while the amount of compression experienced by the spacer is reduced. The tie bars exhibit a relatively small cross-sectional area as compared to the cross-sectional area of the spacer.

Claims (26)

1. A high pressure press comprising:

a first press base including a first piston cavity for receipt of a first piston and a first tie bar cavity opposite the first piston cavity;

a second press base including a second piston cavity for receipt of a second piston and a second tie bar cavity opposite the second piston cavity, wherein the first piston and second piston are configured to be displaced toward a common region;

at least one spacer positioned between the first press base and the second press base;

a plurality of tie bars extending between, and coupled to, the first press base and the second press base, the plurality of tie bars distinct from the at least one spacer, at least one of the plurality of tie bars including a first end disposed in the first tie bar cavity and a second end disposed in the second tie bar cavity, the plurality of tie bars evenly spaced around and surrounding an entire outer periphery of a cross-section of the at least one spacer, wherein the plurality of tie bars are in a state of tension and the at least one spacer is in a state of compression;

wherein a quantity of tie bars of the plurality of tie bars extending between the first press base and the second press base is greater than a quantity of the at least one spacer extending between the first press base and the second press base.

2. The press of claim 1 , wherein each tie bar of the of tie bars are placed in a state of tension to approximately 95 percent of their elastic limit.

3. The press of claim 2 , wherein the at least one spacer is placed in a state of compression to less than approximately 5% of its elastic limit.

4. The press of claim 1 , wherein a first end of the at least one spacer abuts a surface of the first press base and a second end of the at least one spacer abuts a surface of the second press base.

5. The press of claim 4 , wherein the first end of the at least one spacer is at least partially positioned in an indented portion of the first press base and wherein the second end of the at least one spacer is at least partially positioned in an indented portion of the second press base, wherein the indented portion of the first press base extends partially through the first press base and the indented portion of the second press base extends partially through the second press base.

6. The press of claim 5 , wherein the indented portion of the first press base includes a first rounded corner, a second rounded corner and a straight wall portion extending between the first and second rounded corners.

7. The press of claim 6 , wherein the first end of the at least one spacer includes a notch engaging the straight wall portion.

8. The press of claim 4 , wherein each tie bar of the plurality of tie bars has a first end that passes through a portion of the first press base and a second end that passes through a portion of the second press base.

9. The press of claim 1 , wherein when the first piston and the second piston apply pressure to a workpiece in the common region, the at least one spacer is placed in a reduced state of compression and the plurality of tie bars are placed in an increased state of tension.

10. The press of claim 1 , wherein the at least one spacer exhibits a first cross-sectional area A 1 , wherein each of the plurality of tie bars exhibit a second cross-sectional area A 2 , and wherein the ratio of A 1 /A 2 is approximately 9:1.75.

11. The press of claim 1 , wherein the at least one spacer has a cross-sectional area A S , the plurality of tie bars has a combined cross-sectional area A T , and a value of A S /A T is greater than 0.5.

12. The press of claim 11 , wherein the value of A S /A T is greater than 5.0.

13. The press of claim 11 , wherein the value of A S /A T is greater than 10.0.

14. The press of claim 1 , wherein the first press base, the second press base and the at least one spacer are cooperatively shaped and configured to inhibit rotation of the at least one spacer relative to the first press base and the second press base.

15. The press of claim 1 , further comprising at least one alignment mechanism configured to maintain alignment of the at least one spacer with the first press base and the second press base.

16. The press of claim 1 , wherein the state of tension is within approximately 1 percent of a desired level of tension.

17. A high pressure press comprising:

a first press base including a first piston cavity for receipt of a first piston;

a second press base including a second piston cavity for receipt of a second piston, wherein the first piston and the second piston are configured to be displaced toward a common region;

a spacer positioned between the first press base and the second press base, a first end of the spacer abuts a surface of the first press base and a second end of the spacer abuts a surface of the second press base, the first end of the spacer is at least partially positioned in an indented portion of the first press base and wherein the second end of the spacer is at least partially positioned in an indented portion of the second press base, the indented portion of the first press base includes a first rounded corner, a second rounded corner and a straight wall portion extending between the first and second rounded corners, the first end of the spacer includes a notch engaging the straight wall portion; and

a set of two or more tie bars extending between, and coupled to, the first press base and the second press base, wherein the set of two or more tie bars are in a state of tension and the spacer is in a state of compression.
