Abstract

Systems and methods for identifying content corresponding to a language are provided. Language spoken by a first user based on verbal input received from the first user is automatically determined with voice recognition circuitry. A database of content sources is cross-referenced to identify a content source associated with a language field value that corresponds to the determined language spoken by the first user. The language field in the database identifies the language that the associated content source transmits content to a plurality of users. A representation of the identified content source is generated for display to the first user.

Claims (71)

1. A method for identifying content corresponding to a language, the method comprising:

receiving a plurality of verbal inputs over a time period;

automatically determining, using voice recognition circuitry, respective languages of the plurality of verbal inputs;

measuring respective durations of the plurality of verbal inputs;

for each of the respective languages, computing a sum of the durations of the plurality of verbal inputs received over the time period that correspond to the language, each of the sums representing how often the respective language is spoken in a household;

storing the computed sums in a memory in association with the languages, respectively;

identifying a language spoken most often in the household by identifying a greatest sum of the stored sums; and

in response to identifying the language spoken most often in the household:

searching a database of content sources to identify a content source that transmits content in the identified language; and

generating for display a representation of the identified content source.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the storing the computed sums in the memory comprises overwriting a sum previously computed based on a verbal input received prior to the time period.

3. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

for at least one of the languages, computing an updated sum of a cumulative duration of verbal inputs received that correspond to the language; and

storing the updated sum in the memory in association with the language.

4. The method of claim 3 , further comprising:

detecting that the updated sum is the greatest sum of the stored sums; and

identifying that the language spoken most often in the household has changed to the language that corresponds to the updated sum.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the representation of the identified content source includes an indication of a language field associated with the identified content source.

6. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

receiving an input requesting access to a second content source;

identifying a language field associated with the second content source;

determining that a value of the language field associated with the second content source does not correspond to the language spoken most often in the household; and

in response to determining that a value of the language field associated with the second content source does not correspond to the language spoken most often in the household, providing, to a display device, the representation of the content source that transmits content in the language spoken most often in the household.

7. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

generating for display an interactive list representing the automatically determined respective languages;

receiving an input selecting a language from the interactive list; and

searching the database of content sources to identify a content source associated with a language field value that corresponds to the selected language instead of the language spoken most often in the household.

8. The method of claim 1 , wherein the representation of the identified content source includes a channel name or number of the identified content source.

9. The method of claim 1 , wherein the representation of the identified content source is included in an overlay on top of content currently being generated for display.

10. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

retrieving a subscription plan from a storage device;

determining that the identified content source that transmits language content in the language spoken most often in the household is not included in the retrieved subscription plan prior to generating for display the representation of the identified content source;

cross-referencing the database of content sources to identify a second content source associated with a language field value that corresponds to the language spoken most often in the household; and

generating for display a representation of the identified second content source.

11. A system for identifying content corresponding to a language, the method comprising:

storage circuitry;

control circuitry; and

voice recognition circuitry,

wherein the control circuitry is configured to:

receive a plurality of verbal inputs over a time period, and

measure respective durations of the plurality of verbal inputs,

wherein the voice recognition circuitry is configured to automatically determine respective languages of the plurality of verbal inputs,

wherein the control circuitry is further configured to compute, for each of the respective languages, a sum of the durations of the plurality of verbal inputs received over the time period that correspond to the language, each of the sums representing how often the respective language is spoken in a household,

wherein the storage circuitry is configured to store the computed sums in a memory in association with the languages, respectively, and

wherein the control circuitry is further configured to:

identify a language spoken most often in the household by identifying a greatest sum of the stored sums, and

in response to identifying the language spoken most often in the household:

search a database of content sources to identify a content source that transmits content in the identified language; and

generate for display a representation of the identified content source.

12. The system of claim 11 , wherein the storage circuitry is configured to store the computed sums in the memory by overwriting a sum previously computed based on a verbal input received prior to the time period.

13. The system of claim 11 , wherein the control circuitry is further configured to compute, for at least one of the languages, an updated sum of a cumulative duration of verbal inputs received that correspond to the language, and the storage circuitry is further configured to store the updated sum in the memory in association with the language.

14. The system of claim 13 , wherein the control circuitry is further configured to:

detect that the updated sum is the greatest sum of the stored sums; and

identify that the language spoken most often in the household has changed to the language that corresponds to the updated sum.

15. The system of claim 11 , wherein the representation of the identified content source includes an indication of a language field associated with the identified content source.

16. The system of claim 11 , wherein the control circuitry is further configured to:

receive an input requesting access to a second content source;

identify a language field associated with the second content source;

determine that a value of the language field associated with the second content source does not correspond to the language spoken most often in the household; and

in response to determining that a value of the language field associated with the second content source does not correspond to the language spoken most often in the household, provide, to a display device, the representation of the content source that transmits content in the language spoken most often in the household.

17. The system of claim 11 , wherein the control circuitry is further configured to:

generate for display an interactive list representing the automatically determined respective languages;

receive an input selecting a language from the interactive list; and

search the database of content sources to identify a content source associated with a language field value that corresponds to the selected language instead of the language spoken most often in the household.

18. The system of claim 11 , wherein the representation of the identified content source includes a channel name or number of the identified content source.

19. The system of claim 11 , wherein the representation of the identified content source is included in an overlay on top of content currently being generated for display.

20. The system of claim 11 , wherein the control circuitry is further configured to:

retrieve a subscription plan from a storage device;

determine that the identified content source that transmits language content in the language spoken most often in the household is not included in the retrieved subscription plan prior to generating for display the representation of the identified content source;

cross-reference the database of content sources to identify a second content source associated with a language field value that corresponds to the language spoken most often in the household; and

generate for display a representation of the identified second content source.
