Abstract

Presented herein are methods, systems, devices, and computer-readable media for image guided surgery. The systems herein allow a physician to use multiple instruments for a surgery and simultaneously provide image-guidance data for those instruments. Various embodiments disclosed herein provide information to physicians about procedures they are performing, the devices (such as ablation needles, ultrasound wands or probes, scalpels, cauterizers, etc.) they are using during the procedure, the relative emplacements or poses of these devices, prediction information for those devices, and other information. Some embodiments provide useful information about 3D data sets. Additionally, some embodiments provide for quickly calibratable surgical instruments or attachments for surgical instruments.

Claims (44)

1. A method for medical device navigation, the method comprising:

receiving real-time medical imaging data;

determining an emplacement of a 2D medical image based at least in part on the real-time medical imaging data and emplacement data associated with a first physical medical device;

determining an emplacement of a virtual medical device based at least in part on emplacement data associated with a second physical medical device;

determining an intersection between an axis of the virtual medical device and the 2D medical image based at least in part on the emplacement of the 2D medical image and the emplacement of the virtual medical device; and

causing one or more displays to concurrently display, in a virtual 3D space:

a perspective view of the 2D medical image based at least in part on a relative orientation of the first physical medical device with respect to an expected location of a user, and

an indication of the intersection between the axis of the medical device and the 2D medical image.

2. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

determining a distance between a tip of the virtual medical device and a point on the 2D medical image that is closest to the tip of the virtual medical device; and

causing the one or more displays to further concurrently display:

an indication of the distance.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the second physical medical device comprises an ablation needle, wherein the method further comprises:

determining an emplacement of an ablation volume based at least in part on the emplacement data associated with the second physical medical device;

determining a portion of the ablation volume that intersects with the 2D medical image; and

causing the one or more displays to further concurrently display:

an indication of the portion of the ablation volume that that intersects with the 2D medical image, wherein the indication of the portion of the ablation volume is coplanar with the 2D medical image.

4. The method of claim 1 , further comprising causing the one or more displays to display a perspective view of the virtual medical device based at least in part on a relative orientation of the second physical medical device with respect to the expected location of the user.

5. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

determining a perspective view of the 2D medical image based at least in part on a relative orientation of the first physical medical device with respect to a particular location,

wherein said causing the one or more displays to concurrently display the 2D medical image comprising causing the one or more displays to concurrently display the perspective view of the 2D medical image.

6. The method of claim 5 , wherein the expected location of the user is a fixed location in front of the one or more displays.

7. A method for image guidance comprising:

receiving real-time medical imaging data;

determining an emplacement of a medical image based at least in part on the real-time medical imaging data and emplacement data associated with a physical medical device; and

causing one or more displays to concurrently display, in a virtual 3D space, a perspective view of at least a portion of the medical image, wherein the perspective view is based at least in part on a relative emplacement of the physical medical device with respect to an expected location of a user.

8. The method of claim 7 , wherein the expected location comprises a location from which the one or more displays are visible.

9. The method of claim 7 , wherein the expected location of the user is a fixed location in front of the one or more displays.

10. The method of claim 7 , wherein said causing the one or more displays to display the perspective view comprises causing the one or more displays to display the perspective view in real-time.

11. The method of claim 7 , wherein the physical medical device comprises an imaging device.

12. The method of claim 7 , further comprising causing the one or more displays to display a graphic indicating an intersection between a trajectory of a virtual medical device and a location on a 2D plane corresponding to the medical image.

13. The method of claim 7 , wherein the physical medical device is a first physical medical device, the method further comprising:

determining an emplacement of a virtual medical device based at least in part on emplacement data associated with a second physical medical device; and

causing the one or more displays to display in real-time a perspective view of an ablation volume corresponding to the virtual medical device based at least in part on the emplacement of the virtual medical device.

14. A system for image guidance comprising one or more processors configured to:

receive real-time medical imaging data;

determine an emplacement of a medical image based at least in part on the real-time medical imaging data and emplacement data associated with a medical imaging device; and

cause one or more displays to display, in a virtual 3D space, a perspective view of at least a portion of the medical image, wherein the perspective view is based at least in part on a relative emplacement of the medical imaging device with respect to an expected location of a user.

15. The system of claim 14 , wherein the expected location comprises a location from which the one or more displays are visible.

16. The system of claim 14 , wherein the expected location of the user is a fixed location in front of the one or more displays.

17. The system of claim 14 , wherein the one or more processors are further configured to cause the one or more displays to display a graphic indicating an intersection between a trajectory of a virtual medical device and a location on a 2D plane corresponding to the medical image.

18. The system of claim 14 , wherein the one or more processors are further configured to:

determine an emplacement of a physical medical device based at least in part on emplacement data associated with a physical medical device; and

cause the one or more displays to display in real-time an ablation volume corresponding to the physical medical device based at least in part on the emplacement of the physical medical device.
