Abstract

Some embodiments of a wearable infusion pump system can include a pump device having a drive system to dispense a medicine to a user, an activity sensor that detects a possible change in an activity level of the user, and a controller to activate the drive system to dispense the medicine to the user. The controller device can query the user to indicate whether a detected activity level of the user represents an actual change in the activity level of the user. The controller device can alter the medicine dispensing schedule based on the user indicated changes in activity level.

Claims (39)

1. An infusion pump system, comprising:

a pump device including a drive system configured to dispense a medicine to a user;

a first sensor configured to detect motion of the user indicative of a physical activity;

a second sensor configured to detect information indicative of one or more numerical values of a physical characteristic of the user, wherein the second sensor is different than the first sensor; and

a controller configured to activate the drive system to dispense the medicine to the user, the controller further configured to: (i) detect that the user has engaged in the physical activity based on information received from the first sensor; (ii) corroborate that the user has engaged in the physical activity based on information received from the second sensor and; (iii) adjust delivery of the medicine from the pump device to the user in response to detecting and corroborating that the user has engaged in the physical activity.

2. The infusion pump system of claim 1 , wherein the first sensor comprises a motion sensor, the second sensor comprises a heart rate sensor, and the physical characteristic of the user comprises a heart rate of the user.

3. The infusion pump system of claim 2 , wherein adjusting delivery of the medicine from the pump device to the user comprises reducing a rate of medicine delivery in response to identifying an increase in heart rate of the user based on information received from the heart rate sensor.

4. The infusion pump system of claim 1 , wherein the second sensor comprises a blood pressure sensor, and the physical characteristic of the user comprises a blood pressure of the user.

5. The infusion pump system of claim 4 , wherein adjusting delivery of the medicine from the pump device to the user comprises reducing a rate of medicine delivery in response to identifying an increase in blood pressure of the user based on information received from the blood pressure sensor.

6. The infusion pump system of claim 1 , wherein the second sensor comprises a body temperature sensor, and the physical characteristic of the user comprises a body temperature of the user.

7. The infusion pump system of claim 6 , wherein adjusting delivery of the medicine from the pump device to the user comprises reducing a rate of medicine delivery in response to identifying an increase in body temperature of the user based on information received from the body temperature sensor.

8. The infusion pump system of claim 1 , wherein the second sensor comprises a perspiration sensor, and the physical characteristic of the user comprises a perspiration level of the user.

9. The infusion pump system of claim 8 , wherein adjusting delivery of the medicine from the pump device to the user comprises reducing a rate of medicine delivery in response to identifying an increase in perspiration of the user based on information received from the perspiration sensor.

10. The infusion pump system of claim 1 , wherein the second sensor comprises a respiration sensor, and the physical characteristic of the user comprises a respiration rate of the user.

11. The infusion pump system of claim 10 , wherein adjusting delivery of the medicine from the pump device to the user comprises reducing a rate of medicine delivery in response to identifying an increase in respiration rate of the user based on information received from the respiration sensor.

12. The infusion pump system of claim 1 , wherein the first sensor comprises a motion sensor, the second sensor comprises a muscle activity sensor, and the physical characteristic of the user comprises muscle activity of the user.

13. The infusion pump system of claim 12 , wherein adjusting delivery of the medicine from the pump device to the user comprises reducing a rate of medicine delivery in response to identifying an increase in muscle activity of the user based on information received from the muscle activity sensor.

14. The infusion pump system of claim 1 , wherein the second sensor comprises an inclination sensor.

15. The infusion pump system of claim 1 , wherein the first sensor comprises a motion sensor and the second sensor comprises a physiological sensor.

The infusion pump system of claim 1 , wherein determining that the user has engaged in the physical activity based on information received from the first sensor and the second sensor comprises detecting that the user has engaged in the physical activity based on information received from the first sensor and confirming that the user has engaged in the physical activity based on information received from the second sensor.

17. The infusion pump system of claim 1 , wherein:

the first sensor comprises a motion sensor; and

determining that the user has engaged in the physical activity based on information received from the first sensor and the second sensor comprises detecting that the user has engaged in the physical activity based on motion detected by the first sensor and confirming that the user has engaged in the physical activity based detecting an increase in the one or more numerical values of the physical characteristic of the user using information received from the second sensor.

18. A method of administering medicinal fluid to a user, comprising:

delivering a medicinal fluid from a wearable pump system to the user;

detecting an activity level of the user using an activity sensor;

measuring a physical characteristic of the user using a physiological sensor;

analyzing information received from the physiological sensor to determine whether the detected activity level of the user as detected by the activity sensor represents an actual activity level of the user; and

adjusting the delivery of medicinal fluid from the pump system to the user in response to determining that the detected activity level represents the actual activity level of the user.

The method of claim 18 , wherein detecting the activity level of the user using the activity sensor in the pump system includes detecting whether the user entered data into the pump system and determining if a detected motion of the pump system is within a threshold range of time from when the user entered data into the pump system, wherein the motion of the pump system is ignored if the motion of the pump system is within the threshold range of time from when the user entered data into the pump system.

20. The method of claim 18 , further comprising determining whether a physical activity indicated by the detected activity level of the user could be dangerous and providing a notification to the user that the physical activity could be dangerous.

21. The method of claim 18 , wherein:

the physiological sensor comprises a heart rate sensor;

the physical characteristic of the user comprises a heart rate of the user; and

analyzing information received from the physiological sensor to determine whether the detected activity level of the user as detected by the activity sensor represents an actual activity level of the user includes determining that the heart rate of the user has increased beyond a threshold amount.

22. The method of claim 18 , wherein:

the physiological sensor comprises a respiration sensor;

the physical characteristic of the user comprises a respiration rate of the user; and

analyzing information received from the physiological sensor to determine whether the detected activity level of the user as detected by the activity sensor represents an actual activity level of the user includes determining that the respiration rate of the user has increased beyond a threshold amount.
