Abstract

A TET system is operable to vary an amount of power transmitted from an external power supply to an implantable power unit in accordance with a monitored condition of the implantable power unit. The amount of power supplied to the implantable power unit for operating a pump, for example, can be varied in accordance with a cardiac cycle, so as to maintain the monitored condition in the power circuit within a desired range throughout the cardiac cycle.

Claims (20)

1. A system, comprising:

an implantable electrical device sized and configured to be received within a body of a patient;

an implantable module configured for mounting within the body of the patient, the implantable module having a receiving coil and a power manager in communication with the receiving coil to transmit power from the receiving coil to the implantable electrical device;

an external module:

a transmitting coil adapted for transcutaneous mutual inductive coupling with the receiving coil, the transmitting coil and the receiving coil including a resonant frequency;

a transcutaneous energy driver configured to apply an alternating current having a variable transmission frequency to the transmitting coil; and

the implantable module further including a microcontroller configured to monitor a condition of the power manager and to send a transcutaneous telemetry signal from a radiofrequency telemetry system within the implantable module and in communication with the microcontroller representing the monitored condition, the microcontroller being configured to measure a voltage at the receiving coil.

2. The system of claim 1 , wherein:

the microcontroller is configured to monitor the condition of the power manager in response to a change in coupling between the transmitting coil and the receiving coil and adjust the alternating current in the transmitting coil to vary the alternating current in the transmitting coil in accordance with the change in coupling and maintain the monitored condition within a desired range.

3. The system of claim 2 , wherein the microcontroller is configured to monitor the condition of the power manager and to send the telemetry signal at least 50 times per second.

4. The system of claim 2 , wherein the monitored condition is a voltage at the receiving coil.

5. The system of claim 1 , wherein the external module further includes a microcontroller configured to maintain a difference between the transmission frequency and the resonant frequency; and wherein the power manager is coupled to a battery and is configured to route power from the receiving coil to the implantable electrical device, to the battery when power is received through the receiving coil, and from the battery to the implantable electrical device when power is not received by the receiving coil, and wherein the microcontroller of the implantable module and the microcontroller of the external module are configured to vary the current in the transmitting coil and to maintain the condition within the desired range during charging and during operation when the battery is fully charged.

6. The system of claim 5 , wherein the microcontroller of the external module is configured to automatically adjust a resonance between the transmitting coil and the receiving coil.

7. The system of claim 5 , wherein the microcontroller of the implantable module is configured to send, and the microcontroller of the external module is configured to receive, the telemetry signal in each of a plurality of periodic intervals of less than one second, and wherein the implantable module operates without an implanted battery for supplying power to the implantable electrical device.

8. The system of claim 1 , wherein the microcontroller of the implantable module further includes a temperature sensor configured detect a temperature within the implantable power unit.

9. The system of claim 1 , wherein the microcontroller of the implantable module is configured to reduce a supply of current by the power circuit to at least one from the group consisting of the implantable electrical device and an implanted battery coupled to the implantable power unit when a detected temperature exceeds a threshold.

10. The system of claim 9 , wherein the microcontroller of the implantable module and the microcontroller of the external module are configured to monitor the condition of the power manager in response to a change in coupling between the transmitting coil and the receiving coil and adjust the alternating current in the transmitting coil to vary the alternating current in the transmitting coil in accordance with the change in coupling and maintain the monitored condition within a desired range despite the change in coupling.

11. The system of claim 9 , wherein the microcontroller of the implantable module is arranged to monitor the condition of the power manager and to send the telemetry signal at least 50 times per second.

12. The system of claim 1 , wherein the monitored condition is a voltage at the receiving coil.

13. The system of claim 1 , wherein the external module includes a microcontroller and a radiofrequency telemetry system in communication with the microcontroller of the external module.
