Abstract

Methods and systems are provided for increasing bandwidth efficiency in satellite communications. In some embodiments, a satellite communications method is provided that comprises receiving, at a gateway ground station and as part of a downlink transmission from a satellite, a combined source signal comprising a plurality of source signals with an overlapping bandwidth, and extracting, from the downlink transmission, information specifying at least one predetermined modulation method. The method also includes generating, based on the at least one predetermined modulation method and from the combined source signal, a plurality of estimated waveforms corresponding to the plurality of source signals, separating, by signal cancellation and using the plurality of estimated waveforms, the plurality of source signals from the combined source signal, and routing, with a terrestrial network, the plurality of source signals to one or more user ground terminals.

Claims (59)

1. A method for providing bandwidth efficiency in a satellite communication system, the method comprising:

receiving, at a gateway ground station and from a plurality of user ground terminals, a plurality of source signals, wherein each of the source signals is modulated according to at least one source modulation method;

further receiving, at the gateway ground station and from the plurality of user ground terminals, a plurality of information signals corresponding to the plurality of source signals;

combining, at the gateway ground station, the plurality of source signals into a combined source signal with an overlapping bandwidth, wherein each of the source signals are further modulated according to at least one predetermined modulation method before the source signals are combined; and

transmitting, by an uplink transmission from the gateway ground station to a satellite, the combined source signal, wherein the uplink transmission comprises information specifying the at least one predetermined modulation method.

The method of claim 1 , wherein a combined information signal is included in the uplink transmission, the combined information signal includes information specifying the at least one predetermined modulation method and further information related to each of the plurality of source signals that have been combined into the combined source signal.

The method of claim 2 , wherein the combined information signal comprises a modulated parameter specifying the at least one predetermined modulation method, and further comprises, for each of the plurality of source signals, one or more of a user ID, a source modulation type, an error correction code type, or a code rate.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the at least one predetermined modulation is at least one of amplitude shift, phase shift, group delay, spectral inversion, or pseudo-noise coding.

The method of claim 1 , wherein the downlink transmission includes a combined information signal, the combined information signal comprising information specifying the at least one predetermined modulation method, and additional information specifying at least one of a source modulation type or an error correction code type for each of the plurality of source signals.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the method further comprises:

generating, at the gateway ground station, a combined information signal based on the plurality of information signals; and

transmitting, as part of the uplink transmission from the gateway ground station to the satellite, the combined information signal.

7. The method of claim 6 , wherein the combined information signal that is generated at the gateway ground station includes information specifying the at least one predetermined modulation method.

8. The method of claim 7 , further comprising:

receiving, at the satellite, the combined source signal and the combined information signal;

extracting, from the combined information signal, the information specifying the at least one predetermined modulation method;

generating, based on the at least one predetermined modulation method, a plurality of estimated waveforms corresponding to the plurality of source signals;

separating, by signal cancellation and using the plurality of estimated waveforms, the plurality of source signals; and

transmitting, by downlink transmission from the satellite to a plurality of user ground terminals, the plurality of individual source signals.

9. The method of claim 8 , further comprising:

separating, from the combined information signal, each of the plurality of information signals, wherein the plurality of information signals are used to generate the plurality of estimated waveforms.

10. A system capable of providing bandwidth efficiency in a satellite communication system, the system comprising:

communication equipment at a gateway ground station that receives, from a plurality of user ground terminals, a plurality of source signals and a plurality of information signals corresponding to the plurality of source signals, wherein each of the source signals is modulated according to at least one source modulation method;

a set of digital signal processors that combine, at the gateway ground station, the plurality of source signals into a combined source signal with an overlapping bandwidth, wherein each of the source signals are further modulated according to at least one predetermined modulation method before the source signals are combined; and

a set of transmitting antennas that transmit, by uplink transmission from the gateway ground station to a satellite, the combined source signal, wherein the uplink transmission comprises information specifying the at least one predetermined modulation method.

The system of claim 10 , wherein a combined information signal is included in the uplink transmission, the combined information signal includes information specifying the at least one predetermined modulation method and further information related to each of the plurality of source signals that have been combined into the combined source signal.

The system of claim 11 , wherein the combined information signal comprises a modulated parameter specifying the at least one predetermined modulation method, and further comprises, for each of the plurality of source signals, one or more of a user ID, a source modulation type, an error correction code type, or a code rate.

13. The system of claim 10 , wherein the at least one predetermined method of modulation is at least one of amplitude shift, phase shift, group delay, spectral inversion, or pseudo-noise coding.

The system of claim 10 , wherein the uplink transmission includes a combined information signal, the combined information signal comprising information specifying the at least one predetermined modulation method, and additional information specifying at least one of a source modulation type or an error correction code type for each of the plurality of source signals.

15. The system of claim 10 , wherein:

the set of digital signal processors generate, at the gateway ground station, a combined information signal based on the plurality of information signals; and

the set of transmitting antennas transmit, as part of the uplink transmission from the gateway ground station to the satellite, the combined information signal.

16. The system of claim 15 , wherein the combined information signal that is generated at the gateway ground station includes information specifying the at least one predetermined modulation method.

17. The system of claim 16 , further comprising:

a set of receiving antennas, at the satellite, that receive the combined source signal and the combined information signal;

a set of digital signal processors at the satellite that:

extract, from the combined information signal, the information specifying the at least one predetermined modulation method;

generate, based on the at least one predetermined modulation method, a plurality of estimated waveforms corresponding to the plurality of source signals; and

separate, by signal cancellation and using the plurality of estimated waveforms, the plurality of source signals; and

a set of transmitting antennas, at the satellite, that transmit, by downlink transmission from the satellite to a plurality of user ground terminals, the plurality of individual source signals.

18. The system of claim 17 , wherein the set of digital signal processors at the satellite are further configured to:

separate, from the combined information signal, each of the plurality of information signals, wherein the plurality of information signals are used to generate the plurality of estimated waveforms.

19. A non-transitory computer-readable medium storing instructions executable by one or more hardware processors to carry out operations comprising:

receiving, at a gateway ground station and from a plurality of user ground terminals, a plurality of source signals, wherein each of the source signals is modulated according to at least one source modulation method;

further receiving, at the gateway ground station and from the plurality of user ground terminals, a plurality of information signals corresponding to the plurality of source signals;

combining, at the gateway ground station, the plurality of source signals into a combined source signal with an overlapping bandwidth, wherein each of the source signals are further modulated according to at least one predetermined modulation method before the source signals are combined; and

transmitting, by an uplink transmission from the gateway ground station to a satellite, the combined source signal, wherein the uplink transmission comprises information specifying the at least one predetermined modulation method.

20. The computer-readable medium of claim 19 , wherein the at least one predetermined modulation is at least one of amplitude shift, phase shift, group delay, spectral inversion, or pseudo-noise coding.

The computer-readable medium of claim 19 , wherein the downlink transmission includes a combined information signal, the combined information signal comprising information specifying the at least one predetermined modulation method, and additional information specifying at least one of a source modulation type or an error correction code type for each of the plurality of source signals.

22. The computer-readable medium of claim 19 , wherein the instructions further cause the one or more processors to carry out operations comprising:

generating, at the gateway ground station, a combined information signal based on the plurality of information signals; and

transmitting, as part of the uplink transmission from the gateway ground station to the satellite, the combined information signal.

23. The computer-readable medium of claim 22 , wherein the combined information signal that is generated at the gateway ground station includes information specifying the at least one predetermined modulation method.

24. The computer-readable medium of claim 23 , wherein the instructions further cause the one or more processors to carry out operations comprising:

receiving, at the satellite, the combined source signal and the combined information signal;

extracting, from the combined information signal, the information specifying the at least one predetermined modulation method;

generating, based on the at least one predetermined modulation method, a plurality of estimated waveforms corresponding to the plurality of source signals;

separating, by signal cancellation and using the plurality of estimated waveforms, the plurality of source signals; and

transmitting, by downlink transmission from the satellite to a plurality of user ground terminals, the plurality of individual source signals.
