Abstract

A method and apparatus for an adaptive Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP) streaming service using metadata of content are provided. The metadata may include a minBufferTime attribute indicating a minimum amount of initially buffered media content. A terminal may receive content from a server before playback of the content, and may buffer the content by at least the minimum amount. The metadata may include a range attribute that designates a range of a target indicated by a Uniform Resource Locator (URL). The terminal may receive bytes designated by the range attribute from the URL, and may play back the content using the received bytes.

Claims (28)

1. A method for providing a media content performed by one or more servers, comprising:

receiving a request for a segment of the media content based on one or more Media Presentation Descriptions (MPD), from a client; and

transmitting the media content to the client,

wherein the MPD is formalized description of a media presentation related to the media content,

wherein the MPD includes a minBufferTime attributes for each of a plurality of random access points (RAPs) of a representation, and wherein the minBufferTime attribute provides a minimum amount of initially buffered media at a beginning of a media presentation and at one of the each of the plurality of RAPs of the representation of the media presentation.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the MPD includes MPD type comprising at least one of attribute for availabilityStartTime, availabilityEndTime, mediaPresentationDuration, minimumUpdatePeriod and minBufferTime, timeShiftBufferDepth.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the MPD includes at least one of an attribute for mimeType, width and height.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the MPD includes attribute for minBufferSize which is defined by a data size unit or a time unit.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the MPD includes a bandwidth attribute that the client is assured of having enough data for continuous playout providing playout begins after a minBufferTime.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the MPD includes a number of consecutive segments.

7. The method of claim 6 , wherein the consecutive segments have the same bandwidth.

8. The method of claim 1 , wherein the segment includes sub-segments indexed by a segment index.

9. The method of claim 1 , wherein the MPD includes RepresentationType comprising at least one of attribute for id, bandwidth, qualityRanking, and dependencyId.

10. The method of claim 1 , wherein the MPD includes at least one of a segmentTimeline and ContentProtection.

11. A method for providing a media content performed by a client, comprising:

transmitting a request for a segment of the media content based on one or more Media Presentation Descriptions (MPD), to a server; and

receiving the media content from the server,

wherein the MPD is formalized description of a media presentation related to the media content,

wherein the MPD includes a minBufferTime attributes for each of a plurality of random access points (RAPs) of a representation, and wherein the minBufferTime attribute provides a minimum amount of initially buffered media at a beginning of a media presentation and at one of the each of the plurality of RAPs of the representation of the media presentation.

12. The method of claim 11 , wherein the MPD includes MPD type comprising at least one of attribute for availabilityStartTime, availabilityEndTime, mediaPresentationDuration, minimumUpdatePeriod and minBufferTime, time ShiftBufferDepth.

13. The method of claim 11 , wherein the MPD includes at least one of an attribute for mimeType, width and height.

14. The method of claim 11 , wherein the MPD includes attribute for minBufferSize which is defined by a data size unit or a time unit.

15. The method of claim 11 , wherein the MPD includes a bandwidth attribute that the client is assured of having enough data for continuous playout providing playout begins after a minBufferTime.

16. The method of claim 11 , wherein the MPD includes a number of consecutive segments.

17. The method of claim 11 , wherein the consecutive segments have the same bandwidth.

18. The method of claim 11 , wherein the segment includes sub-segments indexed by a segment index.

19. The method of claim 11 , wherein the MPD includes RepresentationType comprising at least one of attribute for id, bandwidth, qualityRanking, and dependencyId.

20. The method of claim 11 , wherein the MPD includes at least one of segmentTimeline and ContentProtection.
