Abstract

Methods, devices and systems for three-dimensional location of the disposition of a sensor coil in a subject including are disclosed. The systems include an array of three or more triplet or quadruplet drive coil sets, at least one moveable sensor coil configured to be disposed in a subject and to provide one or more sensor coil response signals responsive to the respective electromagnetic wave fields, a receiving component configured to control drive signals to the array of drive coil sets and to measure sensor coil response signals from the moveable sensor coil, and a processor is configured to determine a sensor coil disposition in the subject relative to said triplet or quadruplet drive coil sets. The receiving component provides a modified drive signal to maximize or optimize the generated respective electromagnetic wave fields, or the one or more sensor coil response signals.

Claims (30)

1. A medical device locating system for determining a disposition of a medical device in a subject, the system comprising:

an array of quadruplet drive coil sets, each drive coil set including a first drive coil, a second drive coil, a third drive coil, and a fourth drive coil, the first drive coil being orthogonal to the second drive coil, and at least one of the third drive coil and the fourth drive coil being non-orthogonal to the first drive coil or the second drive coil, each of the drive coils being electromagnetic coils that generate an electromagnetic field; and

one or more components configured to measure one or more sensor coil response signals from at least one moveable sensor coil responsive to the electromagnetic fields and to determine a sensor coil disposition in the subject relative to said array of quadruplet drive coil sets from the one or more sensor coil response signals.

2. The system of claim 1 , wherein the array of quadruplet drive coil sets is energized by alternating current (AC) drive signals.

3. The system of claim 1 , wherein the third drive coil is orthogonal to the fourth drive coil.

4. The system of claim 1 , further comprising a drive block having a notch to be aligned with a sternal notch of the subject, wherein the array of quadruplet drive coil sets is positioned on the drive block.

5. The system of claim 1 , wherein each of the drive coils have an air core or no core material.

6. The system of claim 1 , wherein the third drive coil and the fourth drive coil are non-orthogonal to the first and second drive coils.

7. The system of claim 1 , wherein the one or more components includes a digital signal processor.

8. The system of claim 1 , wherein the one or more components includes a low frequency drive oscillator configured to demodulate the one or more sensor coil response signals.

9. The system of claim 1 , further comprising the at least one moveable sensor coil configured to provide the one or more sensor coil response signals responsive to the electromagnetic fields.

10. A method for determining a disposition of a medical device in a subject, the method comprising:

driving an array of quadruplet drive coil sets with drive signals, each drive coil set including a first drive coil, a second drive coil, a third drive coil, and a fourth drive coil, the first drive coil being orthogonal to the second drive coil, and at least one of the third drive coil and the fourth drive coil being non-orthogonal to the first drive coil or the second drive coil, each of the drive coils being electromagnetic coils that generate an electromagnetic field;

receiving one or more sensor coil response signals from a moveable sensor coil, the one or more sensor coil response signals being generated by the movable sensor coil in response to the electromagnetic fields;

measuring the one or more sensor coil response signals; and

determining a sensor coil disposition of the moveable sensor coil relative to the array of quadruplet drive coil sets based on the one or more sensor coil response signals.

11. The method of claim 10 , wherein the drive signals are alternating current (AC) drive signals.

12. The method of claim 10 , wherein the third drive coil is orthogonal to the fourth drive coil.

13. The method of claim 10 , further comprising aligning a notch of a drive block with a sternal notch of the subject, wherein the array quadruplet drive coil sets is positioned on the drive block.

14. The method of claim 10 , wherein each of the drive coils have an air core or no core material.

15. The method of claim 10 , wherein the third drive coil and the fourth drive coil are non-orthogonal to the first and second drive coils.

16. A non-transitory computer-readable medium storing instructions which, when executed, cause one or more processors to perform a method, the method comprising:

driving an array of quadruplet drive coil sets with drive signals, each drive coil set including a first drive coil, a second drive coil, a third drive coil, and a fourth drive coil, the first drive coil being orthogonal to the second drive coil, and at least one of the third drive coil and the fourth drive coil being non-orthogonal to the first drive coil or the second drive coil, each of the drive coils being electromagnetic coils that generate an electromagnetic field;

receiving one or more sensor coil response signals from a moveable sensor coil, the one or more sensor coil response signals being generated by the sensor coil in response to the electromagnetic fields;

measuring the one or more sensor coil response signals; and

determining a sensor coil disposition of the moveable sensor coil relative to the array of quadruplet drive coil sets based on the one or more sensor coil response signals.

17. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 16 , wherein the drive signals are alternating current (AC) drive signals.

18. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 16 , wherein the third drive coil is orthogonal to the fourth drive coil.

19. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 16 , wherein each of the discrete drive coils have an air core or no core material.

20. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 16 , wherein the third drive coil and the fourth drive coil are non-orthogonal to the first and second drive coils.
