Abstract

A high torque sprocket includes a body formed of a castable polymer material defining an outer periphery and a recessed hub section defining an inner surface for engaging a bushing having a smooth circular outer surface and at least one threaded port for securing with the high torque sprocket. A continuous toothed structure is disposed on the outer periphery of the body, which has a circular pitch. A textile reinforcement may be embedded in the body adjacent the inner surface of the hub section. The hub section inner surface is of a tapered shape and adapted to engage a conventional QD bushing or a taper-lock bushing. The continuous toothed structure may have a plurality of S-shaped grooves for engaging a belt and having a groove width, and the ratio of the groove width to the circular pitch may be 0.65 or less, or even a value selected from the range of 0.50 to 0.65.

Claims (40)

1. A high torque sprocket comprising:

a body formed of a castable polyurethane material defining an outer periphery and a recessed hub section defining an inner surface for engaging a bushing comprising a smooth circular outer surface and at least one threaded port for securing with the high torque sprocket;

a continuous toothed structure disposed on the outer periphery of the body, and having circular pitch; and,

a textile reinforcement embedded in the body adjacent the inner surface of the hub section;

wherein the hub section inner surface is a tapered shape adapted to engage a conventional QD bushing;

wherein the continuous toothed structure comprises a plurality of S-shaped grooves for engaging a belt and having a groove width;

wherein a ratio of the groove width to the circular pitch is 0.65 or less;

wherein the castable polyurethane material consists of a liquid which fills a mold and hardens to form the body; and,

provided the castable polyurethane material is devoid of fibers.

2. The high torque sprocket of claim 1 , wherein the ratio of the circular pitch to the groove width is a value selected from the range of 0.50 to 0.65.

3. The high torque sprocket of claim 1 , wherein the castable polyurethane material comprises ultra-high molecular weight powder in an amount of from 1% to 10% by weight of the castable polyurethane material.

4. The high torque sprocket of claim 1 further comprising a flange disposed on a side of the body immediately adjacent the continuous toothed structure.

5. The high torque sprocket of claim 1 further comprising a textile reinforcement embedded in the continuous toothed structure outer surface.

6. The high torque sprocket of claim 1 , wherein the castable polyurethane material comprises ultra-high molecular weight powder in an amount of from 3% to 7% by weight of the castable polymer material.

7. The high torque sprocket of claim 1 , wherein the castable polyurethane material has a cured hardness of from 60 Shore D to 100 Shore D.

8. The high torque sprocket of claim 1 , wherein the body is devoid of any metal structure.

9. The high torque sprocket of claim 8 , wherein the body defines ports comprising threaded metal inserts disposed therein.

10. A high torque sprocket comprising:

a body formed of a castable polymer material defining an outer periphery and a recessed hub section defining an inner surface for engaging a bushing comprising a smooth circular outer surface and at least one threaded port for securing with the high torque sprocket;

a continuous toothed structure disposed on the outer periphery of the body, and having circular pitch; and,

a textile reinforcement embedded in the body adjacent the inner surface of the hub section;

wherein the hub section inner surface is a tapered shape adapted to engage a conventional QD bushing or a taper lock bushing;

wherein the continuous toothed structure comprises a plurality of grooves for engaging a belt and having a groove width; and,

wherein a ratio of the groove width to the circular pitch is a value selected from the range of 0.50 to 0.65;

wherein the castable polyurethane material consists of a liquid which fills a mold and hardens to form the body; and,

provided the castable polyurethane material is devoid of fibers.

11. The high torque sprocket of claim 10 , wherein the plurality of grooves are S-shaped grooves.

12. The high torque sprocket of claim 10 , wherein the castable polyurethane material comprises ultra-high molecular weight powder in an amount of from 1% to 10% by weight of the castable polyurethane material.

13. The high torque sprocket of claim 12 further comprising a flange disposed on a side of the body immediately adjacent the continuous toothed structure.

14. The high torque sprocket of claim 10 , wherein the body is devoid of any metal structure.

15. The high torque sprocket of claim 14 , wherein the body defines ports comprising threaded metal inserts disposed therein.

16. A high torque sprocket comprising:

a body formed of a castable polymer material defining an outer periphery and a recessed hub section defining an inner surface for engaging a bushing comprising a smooth circular outer surface and at least one threaded port for securing with the high torque sprocket;

a continuous toothed structure disposed on the outer periphery of the body, and having circular pitch; and,

a textile reinforcement embedded in the body adjacent the inner surface of the hub section;

wherein the body is devoid of any metal structure;

wherein the hub section inner surface is a tapered shape adapted to engage a conventional QD bushing;

wherein the continuous toothed structure comprises a plurality of grooves for engaging a belt and having a groove width;

wherein a ratio of the groove width to the circular pitch is 0.65 or less;

wherein the castable polyurethane material consists of a liquid which fills a mold and hardens to form the body; and, provided the castable polyurethane material is devoid of fibers.
