Abstract

A backlight assembly includes a substantially planar light guide defining an upper surface, a lower surface, and a side surface. A first plurality of LEDs is positioned below the lower surface of the light guide and oriented to direct the light emitted therefrom into the lower surface. A NVIS filter is placed adjacent to the side surface and a second plurality of LEDs is positioned near the side surface. A separating element extends between the first and second plurality of LEDs. A directing element extends between the second plurality of LEDs and the NVIS filter to direct the emitted light from the second plurality of LEDs through the NVIS filter and into the light guide.

Claims (71)

1. A backlight assembly comprising:

a first plurality of LEDs positioned below the lower surface of the light guide and oriented to direct light emitted from the first plurality of LEDs into the lower surface;

a NVIS filter placed adjacent to the side surface;

a second plurality of LEDs positioned near the side surface;

a separating element extending between the first plurality of LEDs and the second plurality of LEDs;

a directing element extending between the second plurality of LEDs and the

NVIS filter to direct light emitted from the second plurality of LEDs through the NVIS filter and into the light guide; and

a substantially planar support structure, wherein said first plurality of LEDs

and said second plurality of LEDs are mounted to said support structure, and wherein said NVIS filter extends substantially perpendicular from an upper surface of said support structure.

2. The backlight assembly of claim 1 wherein:

said directing element comprises a curved, reflective surface.

3. The backlight assembly of claim 1 further comprising:

light scattering features within the light guide.

4. The backlight assembly of claim 1 wherein:

said separating element is configured to absorb light.

5. The backlight assembly of claim 1 wherein:

said separating element is configured to reflect light.

6. The backlight assembly of claim 1 wherein:

Said NVIS filter extends to a lower surface of said directing element.

7. The backlight assembly of claim 1 wherein:

said NVIS filter extends through said separating element.

8. The backlight assembly of claim 1 further comprising:

a second NVIS filter placed adjacent to a second side surface of the substantially planar light guide, wherein said second side surface is positioned opposite the side surface;

a third plurality of LEDs positioned near the second side surface;

a second separating element extending between the third plurality of LEDs and the first plurality of LEDs; and

a second directing element extending between the third plurality of LEDs and the second NVIS filter to direct light emitted from the third plurality of LEDs through the second NVIS filter and into the light guide.

9. The backlight assembly of claim 8 wherein:

said second directing element comprises a curved, reflective surface.

10. The backlight assembly of claim 8 further comprising:

a support structure, wherein said first plurality of LEDs, said second plurality of LEDs, and said third plurality of LEDs are mounted to said support structure.

11. The backlight assembly of claim 10 wherein:

said first plurality of LEDs, said second plurality of LEDs, and said third plurality of LEDs are mounted to said support structure in a co-planar fashion.

12. The backlight assembly of claim 1 wherein:

said directing element is configured to accommodate an electronic display such that said electronic display is located above said light guide.

13. The backlight assembly of claim 12 wherein:

the electronic display is an LCD type display.

14. A backlight assembly comprising:

a substantially cuboid light guide;

a first plurality of LEDs positioned to direct light emitted from the first plurality of LEDs into a lower surface of said light guide;

a second plurality of LEDs positioned near the side surface;

a separating element extending between the first plurality of LEDs and the second plurality of LEDs;

a directing element extending between the second plurality of LEDs and

the NVIS filter to direct light emitted from the second plurality of LEDs through the NVIS filter and into the light guide; and

a substantially planar support structure, wherein said first plurality of LEDs

and said second plurality of LEDs are mounted to said support structure, and wherein said NVIS filter extends substantially perpendicular from an upper surface of said support structure.

15. The backlight assembly of claim 14 wherein:

said directing element is configured to accommodate an LCD type electronic display in an elevated position above said light guide.

16. The backlight assembly of claim 14 further comprising:

a second NVIS filter placed adjacent to a second side surface;

a third plurality of LEDs positioned near the second side surface;

a second separating element extending between the third plurality of LEDs and the first plurality of LEDs; and

a second directing element extending between the third plurality of LEDs and the second NVIS filter to direct light emitted from the third plurality of LEDs through the second NVIS filter and into the light guide.

17. The backlight assembly of claim 16 wherein:

said directing element comprises a curved, reflective surface; and

said second directing element comprises a curved, reflective surface.

18. The backlight assembly of claim 17 wherein:

said first plurality of LEDs, said second

plurality of LEDs, and said third plurality of LEDs are mounted co-planar to one another on said supporting structure.

19. A backlight assembly comprising:

a substantially cuboid light guide defining an upper surface, a lower surface, a first side surface, and a second side surface, wherein said first and second side surfaces each extend between said upper and lower surfaces and are oriented to oppose one another;

a first plurality of LEDs positioned below the lower surface of the light guide and oriented to direct light emitted from the first plurality of LEDs into the lower surface;
