Abstract

Various switchable RFID devices are disclosed. These switchable RFID devices may include one or more RFID tags and one or more switches. Some of these one or more switches are optionally wireless. In various embodiments, the switchable RFID devices include cellular phones, security devices, identity devices, financial devices, remote controls, and the like. The switchable RFID devices are optionally disposed in a passport.

Claims (14)

1. A method of operating an RFID tag disposed within a passport, the method comprising:

transmitting a first RF signal comprising data via an RFID reader proximate to the RFID tag;

receiving the first RF signal at the RFID tag;

conditionally setting a state of the RFID tag based on the data, the state being set to one of at least readability state and a second readability state;

receiving, at the RFID reader, an RF response signal from the passport in response to the RF first signal, wherein the RF response signal includes personal identifying information displayed on a surface of the passport when the state of the RFID tag is in the first readability state and the RF response signal not including the personal identifying information when the state of the RFID tag is in the second readability state.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the personal identifying information includes a photograph.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the personal identifying information included in the RF response signal is encrypted.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein energy to power the RFID tag is transmitted to the passport from the RFID reader, the power being sufficient to generate the RF response signal.

5. The method of claim 4 , wherein transmitting the energy to power the RFID tag includes transmitting to the passport from at least two different sources.

6. The method of claim 4 , wherein transmitting the energy to power the RFID tag to generate the RF response signal includes transmitting to the passport from at least two different sources.

7. The method of claim 4 , wherein transmitting the energy to power the RFID tag to generate the RF response signal includes transmitting to the passport in a reading zone from at least two different sources proximate to the reading zone.

8. The method of claim 1 , further comprising changing the state in response to receiving a second RF signal at the RFID tag.

9. The method of claim 8 , wherein the second RF signal includes a key.

10. The method of claim 1 , wherein the RF response signal does not include any personal identifying information in the second readability state.
