Abstract

Various switchable RFID devices are disclosed. These switchable RFID devices may include one or more RFID tags and one or more switches. Some of these one or more switches are optionally wireless. In various embodiments, the switchable RFID devices include cellular phones, security devices, identity devices, financial devices, remote controls, and the like. The switchable RFID devices are optionally disposed in a passport.

Claims (25)

1. An electronic passport comprising:

a back cover including:

a passive RFID tag having at least two readability states,

an antenna coupled to the RFID tag,

power electronics coupled to the antenna, the power electronics being configured to power the RFID;

a front cover comprising a shield and a surface having visually displayed personal identifying information;

a non-volatile memory configured to store the personal identifying information, wherein in a first readability state the RFID tag is configured to not transmit, in a second readability state the RFID tag is configured to transmit the personal identifying information, and in a third readability state the RFID tag is configured to transmit, the transmission in the third readability state not including the personal identifying information.

2. The electronic passport of claim 1 , wherein the back cover further comprises an RF shield.

3. The electronic passport of claim 1 , wherein the RFID tag is configured to transmit the personal identifying information in an encrypted form.

4. The electronic passport of claim 1 , wherein the personal identifying information includes a photograph.

5. The electronic passport of claim 1 , wherein the shield includes metallic fibers.

6. The electronic passport of claim 1 , wherein the shield includes a mesh.

7. The electronic passport of claim 1 , wherein the shield includes a wire mesh.

8. The electronic passport of claim 1 , wherein the RFID tag is disposed at least 10 mm from a fold separating the front and back covers.

9. The electronic passport of claim 1 , wherein the RFID tag is disposed at least 5 mm from a fold separating the front and back covers.

10. The electronic passport of claim 1 , wherein the RFID tag is configured to transmit the personal identifying information using power generated by the power electronics.

11. The electronic passport of claim 1 , wherein the RFID tag is configured to transmit a greater amount of personal identifying information in the second readability state relative to an amount of personal information transmitted in the third readability state.

The electronic passport of claim 1 , wherein the RFID tag is configured to transmit one of a plurality of alternative personal identifying information, selection of the transmitted personal identifying information to be transmitted being dependent on whether the RFID tag is in the second or third readability states.

13. The electronic passport of claim 1 , wherein the RFID tag is configured to not transmit any personal identification information in the third readability state.

14. The electronic passport of claim 1 , wherein the RFID tag must receive a key prior to transmitting the personal identifying information, the key being received from an RFID reader via a radio frequency signal.

15. The electronic passport of claim 1 , wherein the RFID tag is configured to transmit an identification number associated with the RFID tag in the third readability state.

16. The electronic passport of claim 1 , wherein the RFID tag is configured to transmit an serial number associated with the RFID tag in the third readability state.

The electronic passport of claim 1 , further comprising switch logic configured to change the RFID tag from the second readability state to the third readability state, the change from the second readability state to the third readability state being responsive to decryption of or application of a hash function to data received by the RFID tag.

18. The electronic passport of claim 1 , wherein the personal identifying information is encrypted.

19. The electronic passport of claim 1 , wherein the personal identifying information includes a name of a person.
