Claims (24)

1. A passport comprising:

an RFID tag configured to transmit identifying information;

a surface configured to visually display the identifying information; and

a cover including a first part and a second part separated by a fold, the first part and the second part including radio frequency shielding, the first part including the RFID tag,

wherein radio frequency shielding of the second part is configured to shield the RFID tag when the cover is closed and configured to allow reading of the RFID tag when the cover is open, the radio frequency shielding including metallic fibers.

2. The passport of claim 1 , wherein the shielding is attached to the first part using an adhesive.

3. The passport of claim 1 , wherein the shielding in the first part extends to within 10 mm of the fold.

4. The passport of claim 1 , wherein the shielding is laminated within the second part.

5. The passport of claim 1 , wherein the shielding is attached to a binding at the fold.

6. The passport of claim 1 , wherein at least a portion of the radio frequency shielding includes multiple layers of shielding.

7. The passport of claim 1 , wherein the radio frequency shielding includes a mesh.

8. The passport of claim 1 , wherein the radio frequency shielding in the second part is configured to attenuate radio frequency signals sent to the RFID tag.

9. A passport comprising:

an RFID tag configured to transmit identifying information;

a surface configured to visually display the identifying information; and

a cover including a first part and a second part separated by a fold, the first part and the second part including radio frequency shielding including metallic fibers, the first part including the RFID tag;

wherein the radio frequency shielding of the second part is configured to shield the RFID tag when the cover is closed and configured to allow reading of the RFID tag when the cover is open.

10. The passport of claim 9 , wherein the RFID tag is configured to transmit the identifying information in an encrypted form.

11. The passport of claim 9 , wherein the identifying information includes a photograph.

12. The passport of claim 9 , wherein the shield includes a mesh.

13. The passport of claim 9 , wherein the shield includes a wire mesh.

14. The passport of claim 9 , wherein the RFID tag is disposed at least 10 mm from a fold separating the front and back covers.

15. The passport of claim 9 , wherein the RFID tag is disposed at least 5 mm from a fold separating the front and back covers.

16. The passport of claim 9 , wherein the first part includes less radio frequency shielding than the second part.
