Abstract

A system and method for paralleling generators. A timing signal indicative of a waveform reference point of at least a first generator of the generators is received at a second generator. The receiving generator determines a closing time for a second generator breaker associated with the second generator in response the timing signal from the first generator. The first generator breaker and the second generator breaker, or an aggregated generator breaker is closed to a bus at the closing time.

Claims (40)

1. A method for paralleling a plurality of generators to a de-energized paralleling bus, the method comprising:

identifying at least one first generator characteristic of a first generator of the plurality of generators and at least one second generator characteristic of a second generator of the plurality of generators;

adjusting the at least one first generator characteristic or the at least one second generator characteristic to match characteristics from the first generator or the second generator;

determining that the at least one first generator characteristic and the at least one second generator characteristic match;

determining a connection time for simultaneously connecting the first generator and the second generator to the de-energized paralleling bus;

generating a first redundant command for connecting, via a first generator controller, the first generator and the second generator at a same time; and

generating a second redundant command for connecting, via a second generator controller, the first generator and the second generator at the same time.

2. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

generating a zero crossing message including timing data indicative of a zero crossing of the first generator of the plurality of generators.

3. The method of claim 2 , further comprising:

generating a closing time message in response to the zero crossing message and indicative of the closing time.

4. The method of claim 2 , further comprising:

generating a closing confirmation message in response to a closing time message and indicative that the closing time message has been received.

5. The method of claim 2 , further comprising:

generating a synchronization message in response to the zero crossing message and indicative of synchronization of the plurality of generators.

6. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

connecting, via a first generator controller, a first generator to the de-energized paralleling bus; and

connecting, via a second generator controller, a second generator to the de-energized paralleling bus.

7. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

connecting, via a system controller, the first generator and the second generator at a same time.

8. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

detecting a fault in an output of the first generator or the second generator; and

generating a control signal in response to the fault.

9. The method of claim 8 , wherein the fault is a short circuit or an open circuit.

10. The method of claim 8 , wherein the fault indicates a system configuration with at least one phase closed out of phase or with a phase rotation that is backwards.

11. An apparatus for selectively connecting generators to a paralleling bus through wiring, the apparatus comprising:

a breaker configured to connect and disconnect a generator to a bus; and

a generator controller configured to equalize characteristics of an output of the generator to characteristics of other generators, wherein the generators are selectively connected to the paralleling bus simultaneously via redundant commands, the generator controller further configured to detect one or more errors for wiring connections between the generator and the paralleling bus.

12. The apparatus of claim 11 , wherein the generator controller is a first generator controller, wherein the generator controller is configured to send the characteristics of the output of the generator as timing data indicative of a reference point of the output of the generator to a second generator controller and configured to generate, in response to confirmation of synchronization from the second generator controller, a breaker command to instruct the breaker to close the generator to the bus.

13. The apparatus of claim 11 , wherein the bus is connected to a load device.

14. The apparatus of claim 11 , wherein the characteristics of other generators includes a signal representing an average characteristic of the other generators.

15. The apparatus of claim 11 , wherein the generator controller is a system controller configured to aggregate the characteristics from the generators and send breaker commands to the generators to instruct breakers to close the generators to the bus.

16. The apparatus of claim 11 , wherein the generator controller is configured to generate a communication signal indicative of the output of the generator.

17. A generator paralleling system comprising:

a paralleling bus;

a plurality of generators configured to generate output and to be paralleled to the paralleling bus;

a plurality of breakers configured to selectively connect the plurality of generators to the paralleling bus, wherein the paralleling bus is de-energized until the generators connect to the paralleling bus; and

at least one controller configured to synchronize at least two of the plurality of generators together without connecting to the paralleling bus, wherein the at least two of the plurality of generators are sequenced, via redundant commands to selectively connect to the paralleling bus at substantially a same time.

18. The generator paralleling system of claim 17 , wherein the at least one controller is configured to identify characteristics of the output of the plurality of generators as timing data indicative of a reference point of the output.

19. The generator paralleling system of claim 17 , wherein the at least one controller is configured to generate in response to synchronization a breaker command to instruct at least one of the plurality of breakers to close to the paralleling bus.
