Abstract

An actuator is usable in a damping system, which may be a component of an airside system, waterside system, building management system, or HVAC system. The actuator is coupled to a damper and may open and close the damper. The damper selectively seals a duct to prevent spreading of gas, smoke, or fire within a building. The actuator includes a gear that rotates as the damper is opened and closed. A cluster pinion is coupled to the gear and rotates with the gear. A locker is rotatably coupled to a stopper and has a range of motion limited by the stopper. The stopper includes a rib extending outwardly and limiting the range of motion of the locker. The rib is configured to deform at a temperature exceeding a threshold. A spring is coupled to the locker and biasing the locker against the rib.

Claims (39)

1 . An actuator, comprising:

an actuator housing having an interior portion, the interior portion including:

a gear configured to rotate as a fire damper is opened and closed;

a pinion coupled to the gear and rotating with the gear;

a locker rotatably coupled to a stopper and having a range of motion limited by the stopper;

the stopper being fixedly coupled to an interior surface in the interior portion, the stopper including a rib extending outwardly and limiting the range of motion of the locker, wherein the rib is configured to deform at a temperature exceeding a threshold and permit rotational movement of the locker towards the cluster pinion to engage the pinion; and

a spring coupled to the locker, the spring configured to bias the locker against the rib and towards the pinion.

2 . The actuator of claim 1 , wherein the threshold is 72° C.

3 . The actuator of claim 1 , wherein the locker has a length defined by a distance between the pinion and the end of the stopper, wherein the pinion is a cluster pinion.

4 . The actuator of claim 1 , wherein the locker is rotatably coupled an end of a stopper.

5 . The actuator of claim 1 , wherein the locker includes a plurality of teeth configured to engage with the cluster pinion.

6 . The actuator of claim 5 , wherein the teeth are configured to permit rotation of the cluster pinion in one direction.

7 . The actuator of claim 6 , wherein the teeth are configured to prevent rotation of the cluster pinion in an opposite direction.

8 . The actuator of claim 1 , wherein the spring has one end coupled to the interior surface and another end coupled to the locker.

9 . An actuator, comprising:

an actuator housing having an interior portion, the interior portion including:

a gear configured to rotate as a damper is opened and closed;

a cluster pinion coupled to the gear and rotating with the gear;

a locker rotatably coupled to an end of a stopper and having a range of motion limited by the stopper, the locker including a plurality of teeth configured to engage with the cluster pinion and prevent reverse rotation of the cluster pinion;

the stopper fixedly coupled to an interior surface in the interior portion, the stopper including a rib extending outwardly and limiting the range of motion of the locker, wherein the rib is configured to deform at a temperature exceeding a threshold and permit rotational movement of the locker towards the cluster pinion to engage the cluster pinion; and

a spring coupled to the locker, the spring configured to bias the locker against the rib and towards the cluster pinion.

10 . The actuator of claim 9 , wherein the threshold is 72° C.

11 . The actuator of claim 9 , wherein the teeth are configured to permit rotation of the cluster pinion in one direction.

12 . The actuator of claim 9 , wherein the locker is rotatably coupled an end of a stopper.

13 . A damper system, comprising:

a damper configured to selectively seal a duct to prevent spreading of a gas, smoke or fire; and

an actuator coupled to the damper and configured to open and close the damper, the actuator comprising:

a gear configured to rotate as the damper is opened and closed;

a cluster pinion coupled to the gear and rotating with the gear;

a locker rotatably coupled to a stopper and having a range of motion limited by the stopper;

the stopper fixedly coupled to an interior surface of the actuator, the stopper including a rib extending outwardly and limiting the range of motion of the locker, wherein the rib is configured to deform at a temperature exceeding a threshold and permit rotational movement of the locker towards the cluster pinion to engage the cluster pinion; and

a spring coupled to the locker, the spring configured to bias the locker against the rib and towards the cluster pinion.

14 . The damper system of claim 13 , wherein the threshold is 72° C.

15 . The damper system of claim 13 , wherein the locker has a length defined by a distance between the cluster pinion and the end of the stopper.

16 . The damper system of claim 13 , wherein the locker is rotatably coupled an end of a stopper.

17 . The damper system of claim 13 , wherein the locker includes a plurality of teeth configured to engage with the cluster pinion.

18 . The damper system of claim 17 , wherein the teeth are configured to permit rotation of the cluster pinion in one direction.

19 . The damper system of claim 18 , wherein the teeth are configured to prevent rotation of the cluster pinion in an opposite direction.

20 . The damper system of claim 13 , wherein the spring has one end coupled to the interior surface and another end coupled to the locker.
