Abstract

A cutting guide and base are provided for use during a total ankle replacement surgical procedure. The cutting guide base includes a slot, a first set of holes and a second set of holes. The first set of holes are positioned along a first flange that extends away from the slot. The second set of holes are positioned along a second flange extending from the slot with a slit included along a wall defining the slot. A method of use of the cutting guide and base is also provided.

Claims (37)

1. A cutting system, comprising:

a cutting base having a body defining a slot, a first set of holes, and a second set of holes, the first set of holes being positioned along a first flange extending away from the slot in a first direction, and the second set of holes being positioned along a second flange extending from the slot in a second direction that is opposite the first direction wherein a slit is defined along a wall defining the slot, the slit sized and configured to receive a saw blade therein for performing a chamfer cut of a bone; and

a first cutting guide having a body defining a plurality of holes that overlap one another to form a slot having a width that is smaller than a width of the slot defined by the cutting base, the first cutting guide including a set of pegs that extend inferiorly from the first cutting guide and are sized and configured to be received with the first set of holes or the second set of holes to secure the first cutting guide to the cutting base.

The cutting system of claim 1 wherein the cutting base defines a third set of holes positioned along the first flange and a fourth set of holes positioned along the second flange, wherein the third and fourth sets of holes are configured to receive pins for securing the cutting base to a bone surface.

3. The cutting system of claim 1 wherein the slot formed in the first cutting has a width that is smaller than a width of the slot defined by the cutting base.

4. The cutting system of claim 1 wherein the slit is sized and configured to receive a saw blade therein for performing a chamfer cut of a bone.

5. The cutting system of claim 1 wherein the slot in the cutting base is defined by a circumferential shoulder of the cutting base.

6. The cutting system of claim 5 wherein a superior side of the shoulder includes a narrow lateral slit extending parallel to the longitudinal axis of the slot that is sized and configured to receive at least one of a saw blade and bone so as to aid in creating a posterior talar chamfer resection.

7. The cutting system of claim 1 , wherein each of the plurality of holes of the first cutting guide are configured to receive a reamer therein.

8. The cutting system of claim 1 , wherein the slot of the second cutting guide is configured to receive a reamer therein.

9. A cutting system, comprising:

a cutting base having a body including a first flange, a second flange, and defining a first slot, a first set of holes is defined in the first flange that extends away from the first slot in a first direction, and a second set of holes is defined in the second flange that extends away from the first slot in a second direction that is different from the first direction, wherein the cutting base defines a lateral slit within the first slot, the lateral slit sized and configured to receive a blade of a second cutting tool therein; and

a first cutting guide having a body, the body defining at least one opening and including a set of pegs that extend inferiorly from the body of the first cutting guide, the set of pegs sized and configured to be received within the first set of holes to align the at least one opening with the first slot in a first orientation to guide a first cutting tool in performing a first resection and to be received within the second set of holes to align the at least one opening with the first slot in a second orientation that is different from the first orientation to guide the first cutting tool in performing a second resection.

10. A method of using the cutting system of claim 9 , the method comprising:

placing the cutting base on a surface of a first bone;

coupling the first cutting guide to the cutting base by inserting the set of pegs of the first cutting guide into the first set of holes; and

performing the first resection using the first cutting tool.

11. The method of claim 10 , further comprising:

decoupling the first cutting guide from the cutting base after the first resection;

rotating the first cutting guide;

coupling the first cutting guide to the cutting base by inserting the set of pegs of the first cutting guide into the second set of holes; and

performing the second resecting using the first cutting tool.

12. The method of claim 11 , wherein performing the first resection includes making at least one plunge cut in each of a plurality of partially overlapping holes defined by the first cutting guide.

13. The method of claim 11 , wherein performing the first resection includes sliding the first cutting tool along a second slot defined by the first cutting guide.

14. The method of claim 11 , further comprising:

decoupling the first cutting guide from the cutting base after the second resection;

coupling a second cutting guide to the cutting base by inserting a second set of pegs extending from the second cutting guide into at least one of the first set of holes and the second set of holes defined by the first cutting guide; and

performing a further resection while the second cutting guide is coupled to the first cutting guide.

15. The method of claim 10 , further comprising

performing a chamfer cut of the first bone by inserting a second cutting tool into a slit located within a wall defining a first slot in the cutting base.

The cutting system of claim 9 wherein the cutting base defines a third set of holes positioned along the first flange and a fourth set of holes positioned along the second flange, wherein the third and fourth sets of holes are configured to receive pins for securing the cutting base to a bone surface.

17. The cutting system of claim 9 wherein the slot formed in the first cutting has a width that is smaller than a width of the slot defined by the cutting base.

The cutting system of claim 17 wherein a superior side of the shoulder includes a narrow lateral slit extending parallel to the longitudinal axis of the slot that is sized and configured to receive at least one of a saw blade and bone so as to aid in creating a posterior talar chamfer resection.

19. The cutting system of claim 9 wherein the slit is sized and configured to receive a saw blade therein for performing a chamfer cut of a bone.

20. The cutting system of claim 9 wherein the slot in the cutting base is defined by a circumferential shoulder of the cutting base.

21. The cutting system of claim 9 , wherein each of the plurality of holes of the first cutting guide are configured to receive a reamer therein.

22. The cutting system of claim 9 , wherein the slot of the second cutting guide is configured to receive a reamer therein.
