Abstract

An apparatus, system and method for call notifications to active communication devices are provided. At an apparatus comprising a processor and a communication interface, a call for a first device is received via the communication interface. When is determined that a second device is active, a notification of the call is transmitted to the second device.

Claims (43)

1. A server comprising:

a processor; a communication interface; and a switching element, the processor configured to:

receive, at the communications interface, a call for a first endpoint device;

send, using the communications interface, a query requesting activity states of each of a plurality of further endpoint devices, the plurality of endpoint devices identified based on a stored association between the first endpoint device and each of the plurality of endpoint devices;

receive, using the communications interface, responses to the query, each response indicating an activity state and an activity level of a respective one of the plurality of further endpoint devices;

select a second endpoint device, the second endpoint device having a highest priority of the further endpoint devices having responses indicating an active state, wherein the highest priority is dynamically generated based on activity levels of the plurality of further endpoint devices;

transmit a notification of the call to the second endpoint device;

receive a signal to redirect the call to the second endpoint device; and

in response to receiving the signal, transfer, using the switching element, the call to the second endpoint device.

2. The server of claim 1 , wherein the processor is further configured to, prior to transmitting the notification:

send, using the communications interface, a query from requesting the capability of the second endpoint device; and

receive, using the communications interface, a response to the query indicating the capability of the second endpoint device.

3. The server of claim 2 , wherein the notification is transmitted only when the response is indicative that the second endpoint device is capable of handling the call.

4. The server of claim 2 , wherein the response includes an indication of whether the second endpoint device is configured for one or more of audio calls and video calls.

5. The server of claim 1 , wherein the activity state of each of the plurality of further endpoint devices is determined by one or more of: monitoring an input device to determine when active typing data is received; monitoring a motion sensor to determine when motion sensor data is received; and monitoring a human-machine interface to determine when human-machine interface data is received.

6. The server of claim 5 , wherein each of the plurality of further endpoint devices is determined to be active based on one or more of the active typing data, the motion sensor data, and the human-machine interface data being received in a given time period after the query is received.

7. The server of claim 1 , wherein the processor is further configured to transfer the call, using the switching element, via one or more of a network and a local link to the second endpoint device.

8. A method comprising:

at a server comprising: a processor; a communication interface; and a switching element:

receiving, at the communications interface, a call for a first endpoint device;

sending, using the communications interface, a query requesting activity states of each of a plurality of further endpoint devices, the plurality of endpoint devices identified based on a stored association between the first endpoint device and each of the plurality of endpoint devices;

receiving, using the communications interface, responses to the query, each response indicating an activity state and an activity level of a respective one of the plurality of further endpoint devices;

selecting a second endpoint device, the second endpoint device having a highest priority of the further endpoint devices having responses indicating an active state, wherein the highest priority is dynamically generated based on activity levels of the plurality of further endpoint devices;

transmitting a notification of the call to the second endpoint device;

receiving a signal to redirect the call to the second endpoint device; and

in response to receiving the signal, transferring, using the switching element, the call to the second endpoint device.

9. The method of claim 8 , further comprising, prior to transmitting the notification:

sending, using the communication interface, a query requesting capability of the second endpoint device; and,

receiving, using the communication interface, a response to the query indicating the capability of the second endpoint device.

10. The method of claim 9 , wherein the notification is transmitted only when the response is indicative that the second endpoint device is capable of handling the call.

11. The method of claim 9 , wherein the response includes an indication of whether the second endpoint device is configured for one or more of audio calls and video calls.

12. The method of claim 9 , wherein the activity state of each of the plurality of endpoint devices is determined by one or more of: monitoring an input device to determine when active typing data is received; monitoring a motion sensor to determine when motion sensor data is received; and monitoring a human-machine interface to determine when human-machine interface data is received.

13. The method of claim 12 , further comprising determining that each of the plurality of endpoint devices is active when one or more of the active typing data, the motion sensor data, and the human-machine interface data is received in a given time period after the query is received.

14. The method of claim 9 , further comprising transferring the call, using the switching element, via one or more of a network and a local link to the second endpoint device.

15. A non-transitory computer-readable medium storing a computer program, wherein execution of the computer program is for:

at a server comprising: a processor; a communication interface; and a switching element:

receiving, at the communications interface, a call for a first endpoint device;

sending, using the communications interface, a query requesting activity states of each of a plurality of further endpoint devices, the plurality of endpoint devices identified based on a stored association between the first endpoint device and each of the plurality of endpoint devices;

receiving, using the communications interface, responses to the query, each response indicating an activity state and an activity level of a respective one of the plurality of further endpoint devices;

selecting a second endpoint device, the second endpoint device having a highest priority of the further endpoint devices having responses indicating an active state, wherein the highest priority is dynamically generated based on activity levels of the plurality of further endpoint devices;

transmitting a notification of the call to the second endpoint device;

receiving a signal to redirect the call to the second endpoint device; and

in response to receiving the signal, transferring, using the switching element, the call to the second endpoint device.
