Abstract

An apparatus suitable for use in an air-conditioning system and configured to provide a plurality of selectable capacitance values includes a plurality of capacitive devices and a pressure interrupter cover assembly. Each of the capacitive devices has a first capacitor terminal and a second capacitor terminal. The pressure interrupter cover assembly includes a deformable cover, a set of capacitor cover terminals, a common cover terminal, and a set of insulation structures. The apparatus also includes a conductor configured to electrically connect the second capacitor terminal of at least one of the capacitive devices to the common cover terminal.

Claims (26)

1. An apparatus suitable for use in an air-conditioning system and configured to provide a plurality of selectable capacitance values, comprising:

at least three capacitive devices housed in a case, each of the at least three capacitive devices having a first capacitor terminal and a second capacitor terminal, the at least three capacitive devices having a combined capacitance value of about 40 microfarads; and

a pressure interrupter cover assembly comprising:

a deformable cover mountable to the case,

at least three capacitor cover terminals, each of the at least three capacitor cover terminals corresponding to one of the at least three capacitive devices, wherein the deformable cover is configured to displace at least one of the capacitor cover terminals based upon an operative failure,

a common cover terminal having at least one electrical contact extending from the deformable cover, and

at least three insulation structures, wherein each of the at least three insulation structures is configured to provide insulation for one of the at least three capacitor cover terminals,

wherein each of the first capacitor terminals is electrically connectable to one of the at least three capacitor cover terminals, and

wherein each of the second capacitor terminals is electrically connectable to the common cover terminal.

2. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the at least three capacitive devices correspond to three capacitor sections of a single wound capacitive element.

3. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the at least three capacitive devices are each separately wound.

4. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein selective connections of the capacitor cover terminals corresponding to the capacitive devices provide a plurality of operable capacitance values.

5. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the apparatus is configured for dual application such that at least one capacitive device is operable for use with a compressor motor of the air-conditioning system and at least one other capacitive device is operable for use with a fan motor of the air-conditioning system.

6. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein each capacitor cover terminal includes fewer than four blades.

7. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein each capacitor cover terminal includes fewer than three blades.

8. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein one or more of the capacitor cover terminals includes two blades.

9. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the pressure interrupter cover assembly resides at a top end of the case.

10. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the common cover terminal includes fewer than three blades.

11. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein two of the capacitive devices each provides a capacitance value of about 5.0 microfarads.

12. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein a first one of the capacitive devices provides a capacitance value of about 4.5 microfarads and a second one of the capacitive devices provides a capacitance value of about 5.5 microfarads.

13. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein one of the capacitive devices provides a capacitance value of about 30.0 microfarads.

14. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the case is configured to receive a fill fluid.

15. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the case and the deformable cover are metallic.

16. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein at least two of the insulation structures are colored.

17. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein at least two of the insulation structures are differently colored.

18. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein a first one of the insulation structures is green, a second one of the insulation structures is white, and a third one of the insulation structures is black.
