Abstract

A dynamic satellite map updating system measures geographic position and travel information of in-flight aircraft in a fleet of aircraft equipped to establish in-flight connectivity services from a plurality of satellite beams. The in-flight aircraft include an on-board satellite map program with satellite map parameters to indicate which satellite beam of a group of available satellite beams is the most desirable based on the in-flight aircraft's geographic location. The system selects in-flight aircraft, determines updated satellite map parameters for the selected aircraft, and transmits the updated satellite map parameters to the aircraft to assemble new satellite map programs to relieve wireless data outage conditions on one or more of the satellite beams. The dynamic satellite updating system may transmit the updated satellite map parameters over an existing satellite data connection to make up-to-date adjustments to the communications load among the group of available satellite beams.

Claims (24)

1. A method of updating the satellite map on an aircraft, the method comprising:

dynamically changing, by an in-flight connectivity ground station while the aircraft is in-flight, at least one satellite beam connection parameter based upon a condition that impacts a respective communicative connectivity of the in-flight aircraft to each of at least one satellite beam included in a plurality of satellite beams, the in-flight aircraft having a satellite map including a set of satellite map parameters for selecting a satellite beam of the plurality of satellite beams, the satellite map parameters corresponding to a set of satellite beam connection parameters, and the in-flight aircraft configured to communicatively connect a modem to the selected, satellite beam; and

transmitting, by the in-flight connectivity ground station to the in-flight aircraft, an updated set of satellite beam connection parameters including the changed at least one satellite beam connection parameter.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein dynamically changing the at least one satellite beam connection parameter based on the condition comprises dynamically changing the at least one satellite beam connection parameter based on a change in a current geographic location or a predicted geographic location of the in-flight aircraft.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein dynamically changing the at least one satellite beam connection parameter based on the condition comprises dynamically changing the at least one satellite beam connection parameter based on an outage of one or more satellite beams included in the plurality of satellite beams.

4. The method of claim 3 , wherein dynamically changing the at least one satellite beam connection parameter based on the outage of the one or more satellite beams included in the plurality of satellite beams comprises dynamically changing the at least one satellite beam connection parameter based on a planned outage of the one or more satellite beams included in the plurality of satellite beams.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein dynamically changing the at least one satellite beam connection parameter based on the condition comprises dynamically changing the at least one satellite beam connection parameter based on respective data loads of one or more satellite beams included in the plurality of satellite beams.

6. The method of claim 5 , wherein dynamically changing the at least one satellite beam connection parameter based on the respective data loads of the one or more satellite beams included in the plurality of satellite beams comprises dynamically changing the at least one satellite beam connection parameter to thereby load balance data among more than one satellite beam of the plurality of satellite beams.

7. The method of claim 6 , further comprising determining projected balanced load levels of the more than one satellite beam of the plurality of satellite beams, and wherein dynamically changing the at least one satellite beam connection parameter based on the respective comprises dynamically changing the at least one satellite beam connection parameter based on the projected balanced load levels.

8. The method of claim 1 , wherein dynamically changing the at least one satellite beam connection parameter based on the condition comprises dynamically changing the at least one satellite beam connection parameter based on an update of a satellite map of another aircraft.

9. The method of claim 1 , wherein dynamically changing the at least one satellite beam connection parameter based on the condition comprises dynamically changing the at least one satellite beam connection parameter based a level of quality of a service that is provided on-board the in-flight aircraft via the at least one satellite beam.

10. The method of claim 9 , wherein dynamically changing the at least one satellite beam connection parameter based the level of quality of the service comprises dynamically changing the at least one satellite beam connection parameter based a predicted level of quality of the service.

11. A system for updating a satellite map program on an in-flight aircraft comprising:

a satellite beam map updater configured to dynamically update at least one satellite beam connection parameter based upon a condition that impacts a respective communicative connectivity of the in-flight aircraft to each of at least one satellite beam included in a plurality of satellite beams, the satellite map program including a set of satellite map parameters for selecting a satellite beam of the plurality of satellite beams, the satellite map parameters corresponding to a set of satellite beam connection parameters, and the in-flight aircraft configured to communicatively connect a modem to the selected, satellite beam; and

a data transmitter configured to transmit an indication of the updated at least one satellite beam connection parameter to one or more of the plurality of in-flight aircraft.

12. The system of claim 11 , wherein the condition comprises a change in a geographic location of the in-flight aircraft.

13. The system of claim 12 , wherein the change in the geographic location of the in-flight aircraft is a predicted change of the geographic location of the in-flight aircraft.

14. The system of claim 12 , wherein the condition that impacts the respective communicative connectivity of the in-flight aircraft to each satellite beam of the at least one satellite beam includes a load imbalance among two or more satellite beams of the plurality of satellite beams.

15. The system of claim 14 , wherein the load imbalance is a projected load imbalance.

16. The system of claim 11 , wherein the condition comprises an outage of one or more satellite beams included in the plurality of satellite beams.

17. The system of claim 16 , wherein the outage is one of a scheduled outage or an unplanned outage.

18. The system of claim 11 , wherein the condition that impacts the respective communicative connectivity of the in-flight aircraft to each satellite beam of the at least one satellite beam corresponds to a respective data load on one or more satellite beams included in the plurality of satellite beams.

19. The system of claim 11 , wherein the condition comprises an update to a satellite map of another aircraft.

20. The system of claim 11 , wherein the condition comprises a current quality or a projected quality of a service that is provided on-board the in-flight aircraft via the plurality of satellite beams.
