Abstract

A contactless, electromagnetic (EM) replacement for cabled Standards-based interfaces (such as USB, I2S) which handles data transfer requirements associated with the Standard, and capable of measuring and replicating relevant physical conditions on data lines so as to function compatibly and transparently with the Standard. A contactless link between devices having transceivers. A non-conducting housing enclosing the devices. A dielectric coupler facilitating communication between communications chips. Conductive paths or an inductive link providing power between devices. An audio adapter communicates over a contactless link with a source device, and via a physical link with a destination device such as a conventional headset. Power may be provided to the adapter from the source device, and by the adapter to the destination device.

Claims (27)

1. A first device for use in establishing a contactless communications link with a second device, the first device comprising:

a full-duplex transceiver system comprising:

first contactless communications circuitry (CCC) configured for transmitting data via a first contactless communications link to the second device; and

second contactless communications circuitry (CCC) configured for receiving data via a second contactless communications link from the second device; and

a data bus coupled to provide data signals to and receive data signals from the full-duplex transceiver system,

wherein the first CCC comprises a first state machine that is operative to track protocol states of the first CCC, and wherein the second CCC comprises a second state machine that is operative to track protocol states of the second CCC.

2. The first device of claim 1 , wherein the protocol states tracked by the first and second state machines comprise a capabilities state.

3. The first device of claim 1 , wherein the protocol states tracked by the first and second state machines comprise a data transfer speed state.

4. The first device of claim 1 , wherein the protocol states tracked by the first and second state machines comprise USB protocol states.

5. The first device of claim 1 , wherein the protocol states tracked by the first and second state machines comprise protocol states associated with one of PCIe, SATA, SAS, MHL, HDMI, DP, Ethernet, I2S, I2C, Thunderbolt, Quickpath, D-PHY, M-PHY, and Hypertransport protocols.

6. The first device of claim 1 , wherein the first and second contactless communications links are asynchronous data transfer links.

7. The first device of claim 1 , further comprising power and ground contacts constructed to interface with reciprocal power and ground contacts of the second device.

8. The first device of claim 1 , wherein the full duplex transceiver enables data to be simultaneously transmitted via the first contactless communications link and received via the second contactless communications link.

9. The first device of claim 1 , wherein the first contactless communication link is a point-to-point contactless communications link between the first device and the second device, and wherein the second contactless communication link is a point-to-point contactless communications link between the first device and the second device.

10. The first device of claim 9 , wherein the first CCC is aligned with a first reciprocal CCC in the second device when the first contactless communications link is established, and wherein the second CCC is aligned with a second reciprocal CCC in the second device when the second contactless communications link is established.

11. A method for transferring data via a contactless communications coupling first and second devices, the method implemented in the first device comprising a full duplex transceiver, the method comprising:

establishing a first contactless communications link using first contactless communications circuitry (CCC) configured for transmitting data to the second device;

establishing a second contactless communications link using second contactless communications circuitry (CCC) configured for receiving data from the second device, wherein data is simultaneously transmitted via the first contactless communications link and received via the second contactless communications link;

tracking protocol states of the first CCC with a first state machine; and

tracking protocol states of the second CCC with a second state machine.

12. The method of claim 11 , wherein the protocol states tracked by the first and second state machines comprise a capabilities state.

13. The method of claim 11 , wherein the protocol states tracked by the first and second state machines comprise a data transfer speed state.

14. The method of claim 11 , wherein the protocol states tracked by the first and second state machines comprise USB protocol states.

15. The method of claim 11 , wherein the protocol states tracked by the first and second state machines comprise protocol states associated with one of PCIe, SATA, SAS, MHL, HDMI, DP, Ethernet, I2S, I2C, Thunderbolt, Quickpath, D-PHY, M-PHY, and Hypertransport protocols.

16. The method of claim 11 , wherein the first and second contactless communications links are asynchronous data transfer links.

17. The method of claim 11 , wherein the first contactless communication link is a point-to-point contactless communications link between the first device and the second device, and wherein the second contactless communication link is a point-to-point contactless communications link between the first device and the second device.

18. The method of claim 17 , wherein the first CCC is aligned with a first reciprocal CCC in the second device when the first contactless communications link is established, and wherein the second CCC is aligned with a second reciprocal CCC in the second device when the second contactless communications link is established.
