Abstract

Systems and methods are disclosed for identifying and modeling unresolved vessels, and the effects thereof, in image-based patient-specific hemodynamic models. One method includes: receiving, in an electronic storage medium, one or more patient-specific anatomical models representing at least a vessel of a patient; determining, using a processor, the values and characteristics of one or more patient-specific morphometric features in the one or more patient-specific anatomical models; modifying the patient-specific anatomical model using the determined patient-specific morphometric features; and outputting, one or more of, a modified patient-specific anatomical model or a patient-specific morphometric feature to an electronic storage medium or display.

Claims (54)

1. A computer-implemented method of identifying and modeling effects of unresolved vessels in image-based patient-specific hemodynamic models, the method comprising:

receiving a reference morphometric feature of vessel structure;

determining, using a processor, a patient-related value of a morphometric feature of the first patient-specific anatomical model;

determining, using the processor, at least one characteristic of one or more unresolved or unmodeled vessels in the first patient-specific anatomical model; and

generating an updated patient-specific anatomical model based on a comparison of the determined patient-specific value of the morphometric feature, the reference morphometric feature, and the determined at least one characteristic of the one or more unresolved or unmodeled vessels.

2. The computer implemented method of claim 1 , wherein the updated patient-specific anatomical model comprises a truncation or removal of a portion of the first patient-specific anatomical model.

3. The computer implemented method of claim 1 , wherein the updated patient-specific anatomical model comprises an extension or addition of a portion of the first patient-specific anatomical model.

4. The computer implemented method of claim 1 , wherein determining the patient-related value of the morphometric feature comprises:

measuring, deriving, or obtaining in vivo data on blood flow and pressure.

5. The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , further comprising:

determining a blood flow characteristic using the updated patient-specific anatomical model; and

outputting one or more of the blood flow characteristic or a hemodynamic simulation using the blood flow characteristic to an electronic storage medium or display.

6. The computer-implemented method of claim 5 , further comprising:

computing a boundary condition parameter of the updated patient-specific anatomical model; and

determining the blood flow characteristic further based on the computed boundary condition parameter.

7. The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , wherein the patient-specific or reference morphometric feature includes a measurement of a vessel cross-sectional area, the rate of change of a vessel cross-sectional area along the vessel, a length-to-diameter ratio, volume, connectivity pattern, Strahler number, an identity of local vascular territory, or a combination thereof.

8. A system for identifying and modeling effects of unresolved vessels in image-based patient-specific hemodynamic models, the system comprising:

a data storage device storing instructions for identifying and modeling effects of unresolved vessels in image-based patient-specific hemodynamic models; and a processor configured to execute the instructions to perform a method including:

receiving a reference morphometric feature of vessel structure;

receiving, in an electronic storage medium, a first patient-specific anatomical model representing at least a vessel of a patient corresponding to the vessel structure;

determining, using a processor, a patient-related value of a morphometric feature of the first patient-specific anatomical model;

determining, using the processor, at least one characteristic of one or more unresolved or unmodeled vessels in the first patient-specific anatomical model; and

generating an updated patient-specific anatomical model based on a comparison of the determined patient-specific value of the morphometric feature, the reference morphometric feature, and the determined at least one characteristic of the one or more unresolved or unmodeled vessels.

9. The system of claim 8 , wherein the updated patient-specific anatomical model comprises a truncation or removal of a portion of the first patient-specific anatomical model.

10. The system of claim 8 , wherein the updated patient-specific anatomical model comprises an extension or addition of a portion of the first patient-specific anatomical model.

11. The system of claim 8 , wherein determining the patient-related value of the morphometric feature comprises:

measuring, deriving, or obtaining in vivo data on blood flow and pressure.

12. The system of claim 8 , wherein determining the patient-related value of the morphometric feature comprises:

determining a blood flow characteristic using the updated patient-specific anatomical model; and

outputting one or more of the blood flow characteristic or a hemodynamic simulation using the blood flow characteristic to an electronic storage medium or display.

13. The system of claim 12 , the processor is further configured for:

computing a boundary condition parameter of the updated patient-specific anatomical model; and

determining the blood flow characteristic further based on the computed boundary condition parameter.

14. The system of claim 8 , wherein the first patient-specific anatomical model includes at least a vessel of interest and one or more unresolved or unmodeled vascular segments branching from the vessel of interest, from one or more of,

a coronary vasculature;

a cerebral vasculature;

a peripheral vasculature;

a hepatic vasculature;

a renal vasculature;

a visceral vasculature; or

any vasculature with one or more unmodeled or unresolved vessels.

15. The system of claim 8 , wherein the patient-specific or reference morphometric feature includes a measurement of a vessel cross-sectional area, the rate of change of a vessel cross-sectional area along the vessel, a length-to-diameter ratio, volume, connectivity pattern, Strahler number, an identity of local vascular territory, or a combination thereof.

16. A non-transitory computer-readable medium storing instructions that, when executed by a computer, cause the computer to perform a method for identifying and modeling effects of unresolved vessels in image-based patient-specific hemodynamic models, the method including:

receiving a reference morphometric feature of vessel structure;

receiving, in an electronic storage medium, a first patient-specific anatomical model representing at least a vessel of a patient corresponding to the vessel structure;

determining, using a processor, a patient-related value of a morphometric feature of the first patient-specific anatomical model;
