Abstract

Aspects of the invention determining a threat score of a call traversing a telecommunications network by leveraging the signaling used to originate, propagate and terminate the call. Outer-edge data utilized to originate the call may be analyzed against historical, or third party real-time data to determine the propensity of calls originating from those facilities to be categorized as a threat. Storing the outer edge data before the call is sent over the communications network permits such data to be preserved and not subjected to manipulations during traversal of the communications network. This allows identification of threat attempts based on the outer edge data from origination facilities, thereby allowing isolation of a compromised network facility that may or may not be known to be compromised by its respective network owner. Other aspects utilize inner edge data from an intermediate node of the communications network which may be analyzed against other inner edge data from other intermediate nodes and/or outer edge data.

Claims (52)

1. A computer-implemented method, comprising:

receiving, by a computer, outer edge data of a call from an originating carrier signaling facility at an originating side of the call;

receiving, by the computer, terminating edge data from a telecommunications network node at a terminating side of the call;

calculating, by the computer, a threat score associated with the call based upon comparing the outer edge data against the terminating edge data; and

redirecting, by the computer, the call to an agent based upon the threat score.

2. The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , further comprising:

receiving, by the computer, inner edge data of the call from an intermediate node of the telecommunications network; and

calculating, by the computer, the threat score based upon comparing the inner edge data and the outer edge data against the terminating edge data.

3. The computer-implemented method of claim 2 , wherein the inner edge data relates to the call when the call has partially traversed the telecommunications network.

4. The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , further comprising:

receiving, by the computer, a first inner edge data of the call from a first intermediate node of the telecommunications network;

receiving, by the computer, a second inner edge data of the call from a second intermediate node of the telecommunications network; and

calculating, by the computer, the threat score associated with the call based upon comparing the first inner edge data, the second inner edge data, and the outer edge data against the terminating edge data.

5. The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , further comprising:

calculating, by the computer, the threat score based upon comparing real-time data and outer edge data against the terminating edge data.

6. The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , further comprising:

calculating, by the computer, the threat score based upon comparing historical data and outer edge data against the terminating edge data.

7. The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , wherein the threat score indicates a degree of threat associated with the call.

8. A computer-implemented method comprising:

receiving, by a computer, first inner edge data of a call from a first intermediate node of a telecommunications network;

receiving, by the computer, second inner edge data of the call from a second intermediate node of the telecommunications network;

calculating, by the computer, a threat score associated with the call based upon comparing the first inner edge data against the second inner edge data; and

transmitting, by the computer, the threat score to a called party associated with the call.

9. The computer-implemented method of claim 8 , further comprising:

calculating, by the computer, the threat score based upon comparing real-time data against the first inner edge data and the second inner edge data.

10. The computer-implemented method of claim 8 , further comprising:

calculating, by the computer, the threat score based upon comparing historical data against the first inner edge data and the second inner edge data.

11. The computer-implemented method of claim 8 , wherein the threat score indicates a degree of threat associated with the call.

12. The computer-implemented method of claim 8 , wherein the first inner edge data and the second inner edge data relates to the call when the call has partially traversed the telecommunications network.

13. The computer-implemented method of claim 8 , further comprising:

redirecting, by the computer, the call to an agent based upon the threat score.

14. The computer-implemented method of claim 8 , further comprising:

redirecting, by the computer, the call to an interactive voice response system for automated authentication based upon the threat score.

15. A system comprising:

a non-transitory storage medium storing computer program instructions; and

a processor electrically coupled to the non-transitory storage medium and configured to execute to the computer program instructions to:

receive outer edge data of a call from an originating carrier signaling facility at an originating side of the call;

receive terminating edge data from a telecommunications network node at a terminating side of the call;

calculate a threat score associated with the call based upon comparing the outer edge data against the terminating edge data; and

redirect the call to an interactive voice response system for automated authentication based upon the threat score.

16. The system of claim 15 , wherein the processor is configured to further execute the computer program instructions to:

receive inner edge data of the call from an intermediate node of the telecommunications network; and

calculate the threat score based upon comparing the inner edge data and the outer edge data against the terminating edge data.

17. The system of claim 16 , wherein the inner edge data relates to the call when the call has partially traversed the telecommunications network.

18. The system of claim 15 , wherein the processor is configured to further execute the computer program instructions to:

receive a first inner edge data of the call from a first intermediate node of the telecommunications network;

receive a second inner edge data of the call from a second intermediate node of the telecommunications network; and

calculate the threat score associated with the call based upon comparing the first inner edge data, the second inner edge data, and the outer edge data against the terminating edge data.

19. The system of claim 15 , wherein the processor is configured to further execute the computer program instructions to:

calculate the threat score based upon comparing real-time data and outer edge data against the terminating edge data.

20. The system of claim 15 , wherein the processor is configured to further execute the computer program instructions to:

calculate the threat score based upon comparing historical data and outer edge data against the terminating edge data.
