Abstract

In a secure network where the network characteristics are not known, a call admission control algorithm and a preemption control algorithm based on a destination node informing the source node of the observed carried traffic are used to regulate the amount of traffic that needs to be preempted by the source. The amount of traffic that needs to be preempted is based on the carried traffic measured at the destination node. The traffic to be preempted is based on the priority of the traffic, where the lowest priority traffic is the first to be preempted until the amount of traffic preempted is sufficient to allow the remaining traffic to pass through the network without congestion.

Claims (30)

1. An apparatus for call admission management and preemption management of data traffic, the apparatus comprising:

a destination measurement device; and

a destination encryption device communicatively coupled to the destination measurement device, the destination measurement device and the destination encryption device being associated with a destination network, the destination encryption device configured to receive data from a source network via an encrypted network, and the destination measurement device configured to:

estimate an available bandwidth through the encrypted network based at least in part on Quality-of-Service (QOS) measurements of the received data;

detect a state of the encrypted network; and

transmit the estimated available bandwidth and the detected state of the encrypted network to a network routing computing device of the source network to facilitate call admission management and preemption management at the source network.

2. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein the destination measurement device detects the state of the encrypted network by comparing observed packet loss and packet delay with a set of preset thresholds.

3. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein the destination measurement device is configured to communicate with the source network to assist the network routing computing device in determining whether to admit a subset of calls upon detection of a congested encrypted network.

4. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein the network routing computing device is configured to calculate an amount of traffic to be preempted according to Offered_Load*Φ−Carried_Load, where the Offered_Load is equivalent to a requested bandwidth from existing calls, the Carried_Load is equivalent to the estimated available bandwidth and Φ is a tunable parameter.

5. A system comprising:

a source network comprising a source encryption device and a network routing computing device;

a destination network comprising a destination measurement device and a destination encryption device;

an encrypted network, where the encrypted network receives encrypted data from the source encryption device and transmits encrypted data to the destination encryption device;

wherein the system is configured to:

receive information at the source network from the destination network regarding calculated carried traffic received at the destination measurement device;

calculate an amount of traffic to be preempted from the source network to reduce congestion through the encrypted network, the calculation including at least in part the information regarding calculated carried traffic, which is ascertained without state information of the encrypted network;

build a priority table of traffic to be introduced into the encrypted network according to a priority policy; and

select traffic flows from the priority table starting with the lowest priority until the selected traffic flow is equal to or greater than the calculated amount of traffic to be preempted;

wherein the amount of traffic to be preempted is calculated according to Offered_Load*Φ−Carried_Load, where the Offered_Load is equivalent to a requested bandwidth from existing calls, the Carried_Load is equivalent to available bandwidth obtained from successfully sent traffic, and Φ is a tunable parameter.

6. The system of claim 5 wherein the destination measurement device detects a state of the encrypted network by comparing observed packet loss and packet delay with a set of preset thresholds.

7. The system of claim 5 wherein the destination measurement device is configured to communicate with the source network to assist the network computing device in determining whether to admit a subset of calls upon detection of a congested encrypted network.

8. The system of claim 5 wherein the priority table built by the system comprises Offered_load, Carried_load, and Preemption Traffic calculated per class or per tunnel across classes.

9. The system of claim 5 wherein receiving information at the source network from the destination network regarding the calculated carried traffic received at the destination measurement device comprises receiving at the network routing computing device from the destination network a carried traffic per differentiated services code point (DSCP) computation based at least in part on one of an ingress time stamp of received packets or a packet sequence of received packets.

10. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein the network routing computing device further uses a carried data traffic estimate transmitted from the destination network to regulate traffic entering the encrypted network.

11. The apparatus of claim 10 wherein the network computing device uses the carried data traffic estimate received from the destination network to preempt calls.

12. The system of claim 5 wherein the system is further configured to determine, at the destination network, an estimate of available bandwidth through the encrypted network.

13. The system of claim 5 wherein the network routing computing device uses the information regarding calculated carried traffic received at the destination network to regulate traffic entering the encrypted network.

14. The system of claim 13 wherein the network routing computing device uses the information regarding calculated carried traffic received from the destination network to preempt calls.

15. The system of claim 5 wherein the Carried_Load indicates the amount of traffic that has been successfully sent through the encrypted network.

16. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein transmitting the estimated available bandwidth to the network routing computing device facilitates a determination by the network routing computing device, when running a call preemption control algorithm, to at least one of admit a call, reject the call, and preempt a lower priority call.
