Abstract

An ear-worn device includes a speaker, an optical emitter, an optical detector, a processor, and a housing configured to be positioned within an ear of a subject, wherein the housing encloses the speaker, optical emitter, optical detector, and processor. The housing includes at least one window that exposes the optical emitter and optical detector to the ear of the subject, and the housing includes at least one aperture through which sound from the speaker can pass. Light transmissive material is located between the optical emitter and the at least one window and is configured to deliver light emitted from the optical emitter to an ear region of the subject at one or more predetermined locations. Light transmissive material is positioned between the optical detector and the at least one window and is configured to collect light external to the housing and deliver the collected light to the optical detector.

Claims (29)

1. An ear-worn device, comprising:

a speaker, an optical emitter, and an optical detector;

a housing configured to be positioned within an ear of a subject, wherein the housing defines a cavity that encloses the speaker, optical emitter, and optical detector, wherein the housing comprises at least one window that exposes the optical emitter and optical detector to the ear of the subject, and wherein the housing comprises at least one aperture through which sound from the speaker can pass;

light transmissive material within the cavity and between the optical emitter and the at least one window that is configured to deliver light emitted from the optical emitter to a non-ear canal ear region of the subject at one or more predetermined locations; and

light transmissive material within the cavity and between the optical detector and the at least one window that is configured to collect light external to the housing and deliver the collected light to the optical detector.

2. The ear-worn device of claim 1 , further comprising at least one lens external to the at least one window, wherein the at least one lens focuses light emitted by the optical emitter and/or collects light reflected from the non-ear canal ear region.

3. The ear-worn device of claim 1 , further comprising a processor supported by the housing, wherein the processor is configured to receive and process signals produced by the optical detector.

4. The ear-worn device of claim 3 , further comprising a transmitter supported by the housing, wherein the transmitter is configured to transmit signals processed by the processor to a remote device.

5. The ear-worn device of claim 1 , further comprising light blocking material positioned between the optical emitter and detector such that the optical emitter and detector are not in direct optical communication with each other.

6. The ear-worn device of claim 1 , wherein the light transmissive material comprises transparent glass material, transparent polymer material, or transparent silicone material.

7. The ear-worn device of claim 1 , further comprising a motion sensor supported by the housing, wherein the motion sensor is configured to sense motion information from the subject.

8. The ear-worn device of claim 7 , further comprising a processor supported by the housing, wherein the processor is configured to remove motion artifacts from signals produced by the optical detector in response to signals produced by the motion sensor.

9. The ear-worn device of claim 7 , further comprising a processor supported by the housing, wherein the processor is configured to process signals produced by the optical detector and signals produced by the motion sensor to determine subject heart rate and respiration rate.

10. The ear-worn device of claim 1 , wherein the light transmissive material between the optical emitter and the at least one window comprises optical dye that is configured to filter one or more wavelengths of light guided by the light transmissive material between the optical emitter and the at least one window.

11. The ear-worn device of claim 1 , wherein the light transmissive material between the optical detector and the at least one window comprises optical dye that is configured to filter one or more wavelengths of light guided by the light transmissive material between the optical detector and the at least one window.

12. An ear-worn device, comprising:

a speaker, an optical emitter, an optical detector, and a processor;

a housing configured to be positioned within an ear of a subject, wherein the housing defines a cavity that encloses the speaker, optical emitter, optical detector, and processor, wherein the housing comprises at least one window that exposes the optical emitter and optical detector to the ear of the subject, and wherein the housing comprises at least one aperture through which sound from the speaker can pass;

light transmissive material within the cavity and between the optical emitter and the at least one window that is configured to deliver light emitted from the optical emitter to a non-ear canal ear region of the subject at one or more predetermined locations;

light transmissive material within the cavity and between the optical detector and the at least one window that is configured to collect light external to the housing and deliver the collected light to the optical detector; and

at least one lens external to the at least one window, wherein the at least one lens focuses light emitted by the optical emitter and/or collects light reflected from the non-ear canal ear region;

wherein the processor is configured to receive and process signals produced by the optical detector.

13. The ear-worn device of claim 12 , further comprising a transmitter configured to transmit the processed signals to a remote device.

14. The ear-worn device of claim 12 , further comprising light blocking material positioned between the optical emitter and detector such that the optical emitter and detector are not in direct optical communication with each other.

15. The ear-worn device of claim 12 , wherein the light transmissive material comprises transparent glass material, transparent polymer material, or transparent silicone material.

16. The ear-worn device of claim 12 , further comprising a motion sensor supported by the housing, wherein the motion sensor is configured to sense motion information from the subject, and wherein the processor is configured to remove motion artifacts from signals produced by the optical detector in response to signals produced by the motion sensor.

17. The ear-worn device of claim 16 , wherein the processor is configured to process signals produced by the optical detector and signals produced by the motion sensor to determine subject heart rate and respiration rate.

18. The ear-worn device of claim 12 , wherein the light transmissive material between the optical emitter and the at least one window comprises optical dye that is configured to filter one or more wavelengths of light guided by the light transmissive material between the optical emitter and the at least one window.

19. The ear-worn device of claim 12 , wherein the light transmissive material between the optical detector and the at least one window comprises optical dye that is configured to filter one or more wavelengths of light guided by the light transmissive material between the optical detector and the at least one window.
