Abstract

The system includes information and data from analysis systems about optimal window covering positions that is communicated to building occupants. The analysis system communicates information to the occupant via the occupant's client computer to allow the occupant to fully or partially adjust the position of a manual shade or motorized shade, without the need for the analysis system to fully or partially electronically control the shades. The system may also adjust window covering systems and other systems to ensure desired or optimal daylight exposure in order promote optimal circadian functionality in the occupants.

Claims (38)

1. A method comprising:

calculating, by a processor, at least one of a calculated shadow at a location of interest on a building based on shadow conditions from adjacent buildings and structures on the building based on a solar altitude and azimuth or a calculated reflected light at the location of interest based on reflectance conditions from external buildings or environmental conditions;

determining, by the processor, a suggested window shade adjustment for a user to implement the suggested window shade adjustment based on at least one of the calculated shadow or the calculated reflected light at the location of interest, wherein the suggested window shade adjustment optimizes at least one of daylighting or internal temperature at the location of interest; and

communicating, by the processor and to a remote user computer of the user, the suggested window shade adjustment in response to the determining.

2. The method of claim 1 , further comprising communicating, by the processor and to the remote user computer of the user, a suggested adjustment for an artificial lighting control system.

3. The method of claim 1 , further comprising communicating, by the processor, information related to the optimizing at least one of daylighting or internal temperature at the location of interest, to at least one of an automated shading system, a building management system, an artificial lighting control system, a glass controller or an HVAC system.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the communicating is in advance of when the calculated shadow is calculated to be present at the location of interest.

5. The method of claim 1 , further comprising communicating, by the processor, information related to the calculated shadow to a building management system to adjust a heating, ventilation, or air conditioning setting associated with the location of interest.

6. The method of claim 1 , further comprising communicating, by the processor, information related to the calculated shadow or to the calculated reflected light at the location of interest to the remote user computer of the user, wherein the remote user computer of the user instructs an artificial lighting control system to modify an artificial lighting setting associated with the location of interest.

7. The method of claim 1 , further comprising communicating, by the processor, information related to the calculated shadow or to the calculated reflected light at the location of interest to the remote user computer of the user, wherein the remote user computer of the user instructs a building management system in advance of when the at least one of the calculated shadow or the calculated reflected light is calculated to be present at the location of interest.

8. The method of claim 1 , further comprising modeling, by the processor, at least one of at least a portion of a building or at least a portion of a surroundings of the building to create the model.

9. The method of claim 1 , further comprising modeling, by the processor and using geographic data and environmental data, at least one of at least a portion of a building or at least a portion of a surroundings of the building to create the model.

10. The method of claim 1 , wherein the calculated shadow includes light from a light source that is blocked by an opaque object, and wherein the calculated reflected light includes the light from the light source hitting an object and bouncing off the object and into the location of interest.

11. A method comprising:

receiving, by a processor and from a sensor, a measured radiation value;

comparing, by the processor, the measured radiation value to a predicted radiation value to obtain a comparison value, wherein the predicted radiation value is generated by a clear sky algorithm using theoretical clear sky solar radiation as a function of time and the integrated solar radiation value;

determining, by the processor and based on the comparison value, a suggested window shade adjustment to optimize at least one of daylighting or internal temperature at a location of interest for a user to implement the suggested window shade adjustment; and

communicating, by the processor and to a remote user computer of the user, the suggested window shade adjustment in response to the determining.

12. The method of claim 11 , further comprising communicating, by the processor and to the remote user computer of the user, information for adjusting a glass controller, wherein the glass controller is configured to adjust a variable characteristic of a glass.

13. The method of claim 11 , wherein the communicating is prior to the predicted radiation value impacting the location of interest.

14. A method comprising:

receiving, by a processor, first information related to at least one of solar penetration through a glass based on a geometry of the glass or a solar load on the glass;

determining, by the processor, a standard management routine for the glass based on the first information related to at least one of the solar penetration through the glass or the solar load on the glass;

determining, by the processor, second information regarding a suggested deviation from the standard management routine arising from an override condition for a user to implement the suggested window shade adjustment; and

communicating, by the processor and to a remote user computer of the user, the second information regarding the suggested deviation in response to the determining the second information.

15. The method of claim 14 , further comprising communicating, by the processor, the second information regarding the suggested deviation to at least one of an automated shading system, a building management system, an artificial lighting control system, a glass controller or an HVAC system.

16. The method of claim 14 , wherein the override condition is based on at least one of:

determining, by the processor, a calculated reflected light on the glass;

determining, by the processor, a calculated shadow on the glass;

determining, by the processor, a modelled brightness value indicating excessive brightness at the glass; or

determining, by the processor, that at least one of an actual British thermal unit (BTU) load on the glass or a calculated BTU load on the glass exceeds a predetermined value.

17. The method of claim 14 , wherein the remote user computer communicates an instruction to a building management system to adjust at least one of a heating, ventilation, or air conditioning setting near the glass.

18. The method of claim 14 , wherein the remote user computer communicates to a first glass controller, a first instruction configured to adjust a variable characteristic of a first glass in a first band; and wherein the remote user computer communicates to the first glass controller, a second instruction configured to adjust the variable characteristic of the first glass in a second band.

19. A method comprising:

receiving, by a processor, circadian rhythms based on activity and exposure to light;

determining, by the processor, a suggested adjustment to optimize the circadian rhythms for a user to implement the suggested window shade adjustment; and

providing, by the processor and to a remote user computer of the user, a notification about the suggested adjustment in response to the determining,

wherein the notification includes the suggested adjustment for at least one of: glass, glass properties, a window covering, a lighting system, an air conditioning, or a building management system.
