Abstract

An environment control system utilizes oxygen and humidity control devices that are coupled with an enclosure to independently control the oxygen concentration and the humidity level within the enclosure. An oxygen depletion device may be an oxygen depletion electrolyzer cell that reacts with oxygen within the cell and produces water through electrochemical reactions. A desiccating device may be g, a dehumidification electrolyzer cell, a desiccator, a membrane desiccator or a condenser. A controller may control the amount of voltage and/or current provided to the oxygen depletion electrolyzer cell and therefore the rate of oxygen reduction and may control the amount of voltage and/or current provided to the dehumidification electrolyzer cell and therefore the rate of humidity reduction. The oxygen level may be determined by the measurement of voltage and a limiting current of the oxygen depletion electrolyzer cell. The enclosure may be a food or artifact enclosure.

Claims (19)

1. A humidity control electrolyzer cell comprising;

a) an ion exchange medium;

b) an anode;

c) a cathode;

wherein the anode and cathode are configured on opposing sides of the ion exchange medium;

wherein the ion exchange medium is a discontinuous ionomer having a discontinuous ionomer layer, wherein the discontinuous ionomer has a lower affinity for water than the remaining portion of the discontinuous ionomer layer;

wherein the discontinuous ionomer is configured between the anode and cathode; and

wherein the discontinuous ionomer has an anode ionomer layer, a cathode ionomer layer and a discontinuous layer configured between the anode ionomer layer and the cathode ionomer layer.

2. The humidity control electrolyzer cell of claim 1 , wherein the discontinuous ionomer layer comprises sulfonated tetrafluoroethylene.

3. The humidity control electrolyzer cell of claim 1 , wherein the sulfonated tetrafluoroethylene has perfluorosulfonyl vinly ether functional groups.

4. The humidity control electrolyzer cell of claim 1 , wherein the discontinuous layer has a higher equivalent that the remaining portion of the discontinuous ionomer by at least 20%.

5. The humidity control electrolyzer cell of claim 1 , wherein the discontinuous ionomer layer has a higher equivalent that the remaining portion of the discontinuous ionomer by at least 35%.

6. The humidity control electrolyzer cell of claim 5 , wherein the discontinuous ionomer has thickness of no more than 50 microns.

7. The humidity control electrolyzer cell of claim 6 , wherein the discontinuous layer comprises an ionomer comprising a sulfonated tetrafluoroethylene polymer and a carboxylic acid functional group.

8. The humidity control electrolyzer cell of claim 6 , wherein the discontinuous layer comprises Styrene Ethylene Butylene Styrene (SEBS).

9. The environment control system of claim 6 , wherein the discontinuous layer comprises polystyrene sulfonate (PSS).

10. The humidity control system of claim 6 , wherein the discontinuous layer comprises Styrene-Polyether ether ketone (S-PEEK).

11. The humidity control system of claim 6 , wherein the discontinuous layer comprises an ionomer having a poly(arylene) polymer and a carboxylic acid functional group.

12. The humidity control system of claim 6 , wherein the discontinuous layer comprises an ionomer having a poly(arylene) polymer and a sulfonic acid functional group.
