Abstract

A first wireless control device may be associated with a second wireless control device in response to the movement of the first wireless control device in relation to the second wireless control device. The second control device may determine whether the signal strength of the wireless signals received from the first wireless control device has changed, and may associate the first wireless control device with the second wireless control device if the signal strength of the received wireless signals has changed. The second control device may be disassociated with the first control device by moving the first wireless control device in relation to the second wireless control device. The second control device may disassociate the first control device when the signal strength of subsequent wireless signals received from the first wireless control device has changed.

Claims (45)

1. A method for associating a device with a controllable light source, the method comprising:

receiving, at the controllable light source, a first wireless signal at a first time and a second wireless signal at a second time subsequent to the first time, the first and second wireless signals received from the device;

measuring, by the controllable light source, a respective signal strength of each of the first and second wireless signals;

determining, by the controllable light source, a difference in signal strength between the first and second wireless signals received by the controllable light source;

comparing, by the controllable light source, the difference in signal strength to a threshold; and

associating the device and the controllable light source when the difference in signal strength exceeds the threshold.

2. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

receiving, at the controllable light source, a third wireless signal at a third time and a fourth wireless signal at a fourth time subsequent to the third time;

measuring, by the controllable light source, a signal strength of the third and fourth wireless signals received by the controllable light source;

determining, by the controllable light source, a difference in signal strength between the third and fourth wireless signals received by the controllable light source;

comparing, by the controllable light source, the difference in signal strength between the third and fourth wireless signals to a negative value of the threshold; and

disassociating the device from the controllable light source when the difference in signal strength between the third and fourth wireless signals received by the controllable light source is less than the negative value of the threshold.

3. The method of claim 2 , wherein disassociating the device from the controllable light source further comprises removing a unique identifier of the device from a memory of the controllable light source.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the device comprises a remote control device.

5. The method of claim 4 , wherein the controllable light source comprises a remotely-located LED driver for driving an LED light source.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein each of the first and second wireless signals received from the device comprise an associate command.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein associating the device with the controllable light source further comprises storing a unique identifier of the device in a memory of the controllable light source.

8. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

communicating, via the controllable light source, association information to one or more controllable light sources in response to associating the device and the controllable light source.

9. A controllable light source configured to receive wireless signals from a device, the controllable light source comprising:

a lighting load;

a load regulation circuit configured to control an intensity of the lighting load;

a wireless communication circuit configured to receive a first wireless signal at a first time and a second wireless signal at a second time subsequent to the first time, the first and second wireless signals received from the device; and

a control circuit operatively coupled to the load regulation circuit and the wireless communication circuit, the control circuit configured to:

measure a respective signal strength of each of the first and second wireless signals received by the wireless communication circuit,

determine a difference in signal strength between the first and second wireless signals;

compare the difference in signal strength to a threshold; and

based on the comparison, when the difference in signal strength exceeds the threshold,

associate the device with the controllable light source.

10. The controllable light source of claim 9 , wherein each of the first and second wireless signals comprise an associate command.

11. The controllable light source of claim 9 , wherein the control circuit is configured to receive digital messages for controlling the intensity of the lighting load after the device is associated with the controllable light source and to control the load regulation circuit to control the lighting load in response to the digital messages.

12. The controllable light source of claim 9 , wherein the control circuit is configured to:

receive a third wireless signal at a third time and a fourth wireless signal at a fourth time subsequent to the third time;

measure a signal strength of the third and fourth wireless signals received by the controllable light source;

determine a difference in signal strength between the third and fourth wireless signals;

compare the difference in signal strength between the third and fourth wireless signals to a negative value of the threshold; and

based on the comparison, when the difference in signal strength between the third and fourth wireless signals is less than the negative value of the threshold,

disassociate the device with the controllable light source.

13. The controllable light source of claim 9 , wherein the lighting load comprises an LED light source and the load regulation circuit comprises an LED drive circuit.

14. The controllable light source of claim 9 , further comprising:

a memory operatively coupled to the control circuit, wherein the control circuit is configured to associate the device with the controllable light source by storing a unique identifier of the device in the memory.

15. The controllable light source of claim 14 , wherein in response to the association, the controllable light source is configured to communicate association information to one or more controllable light sources via the wireless communication circuit.

16. The controllable light source of claim 15 , wherein the controllable light source is configured to act as a central node for a group of controllable light sources comprising the one or more controllable light sources.

17. The controllable light source of claim 9 , wherein the device is a remote control device comprising a battery.

18. The controllable light source of claim 17 , wherein the remote control device and the controllable light source are configured to associate in response to the remote control device moving horizontally or vertically while at least one actuator on the remote control device is actuated.
