Abstract

A flow restrictor for installation in a connection having a terminus opening into an underground vault. The flow restrictor includes an annular restriction device and a concentration member. The annular restriction device is configured to be installed in the annulus near the terminus opening and to restrict a flow of one or more gases through the annulus of the connection. The concentration member is configured to concentrate the flow and includes a through-channel configured to allow the concentrated flow to flow between the underground vault and the annulus.

Claims (37)

1. A flow restrictor for installation in a connection comprising a wall and a terminus opening into an underground vault, the wall defining an annulus, one or more cables extending through the annulus and outwardly therefrom beyond the terminus, a flow comprising one or more gases flowing through the annulus alongside the one or more cables, the flow restrictor comprising:

an annular restriction device configured to be installed in the annulus alongside the one or more cables and near the terminus of the connection, the annular restriction device being configured to restrict the flow through the annulus of the connection; and

a tube configured to concentrate the flow, the tube comprising a through-channel configured to allow the concentrated flow to flow between the underground vault and the annulus, the through-channel being configured to allow liquid to drain freely from the annulus of the connection through the through-channel.

2. The flow restrictor of claim 1 , wherein the flow has an annular velocity, and

the annular restriction device is configured to restrict the annular velocity to less than 0.5 meters per second (“m/sec”).

3. The flow restrictor of claim 2 , wherein the annular restriction device is configured to restrict the annular velocity to less than 0.1 m/sec.

4. The flow restrictor of claim 3 , wherein the tube is configured to concentrate the flow by at least 2-fold.

5. The flow restrictor of claim 4 , wherein the tube is configured to concentrate the flow by at least 10-fold.

6. The flow restrictor of claim 2 , wherein the tube is configured to concentrate the flow by at least 2-fold.

7. The flow restrictor of claim 6 , wherein the tube is configured to concentrate the flow by at least 10-fold.

8. The flow restrictor of claim 1 , wherein the tube is configured to concentrate the flow by at least 2-fold.

9. The flow restrictor of claim 8 , wherein the tube is configured to concentrate the flow by at least 10-fold.

10. The flow restrictor of claim 1 , wherein the tube is constructed from a polymeric or metallic material.

11. The flow restrictor of claim 1 , wherein the tube has a nominal outer diameter of ⅜ inches and a nominal inner diameter of ¼ inches.

12. The flow restrictor of claim 1 , wherein the tube is positioned in a bottom portion of the annulus of the connection.

13. The flow restrictor of claim 1 , wherein the tube extends beyond the annular restriction device and into the annulus of the connection.

14. The flow restrictor of claim 1 , wherein the tube is generally horizontal.

15. The flow restrictor of claim 1 , wherein the tube includes at least one antifouling feature.

16. The flow restrictor of claim 15 , wherein the at least one antifouling feature is a conically shaped screen.

17. A flow restrictor for installation in a connection comprising a wall and a terminus opening into an underground vault, the wall defining an annulus, one or more cables extending through the annulus and outwardly therefrom beyond the terminus, a flow comprising one or more gases flowing through the annulus alongside the one or more cables, the flow restrictor comprising:

an annular restriction device configured to be installed in the annulus alongside the one or more cables and near the terminus of the connection, the annular restriction device being configured to restrict the flow through the annulus of the connection; and

a tube configured to concentrate the flow, the tube comprising a conically shaped screen and a through-channel, the through-channel being configured to allow the concentrated flow to flow between the underground vault and the annulus.

18. The flow restrictor of claim 17 , wherein the flow has an annular velocity, and

the annular restriction device is configured to restrict the annular velocity to less than 0.5 meters per second (“m/sec”).

19. The flow restrictor of claim 18 , wherein the annular restriction device is configured to restrict the annular velocity to less than 0.1 m/sec.

20. The flow restrictor of claim 19 , wherein the tube is configured to concentrate the flow by at least 2-fold.

21. The flow restrictor of claim 20 , wherein the tube is configured to concentrate the flow by at least 10-fold.

22. The flow restrictor of claim 18 , wherein the tube is configured to concentrate the flow by at least 2-fold.

23. The flow restrictor of claim 22 , wherein the tube is configured to concentrate the flow by at least 10-fold.

24. The flow restrictor of claim 17 , wherein the tube is configured to concentrate the flow by at least 2-fold.

25. The flow restrictor of claim 24 , wherein the tube is configured to concentrate the flow by at least 10-fold.

26. The flow restrictor of claim 17 , wherein the tube is constructed from a polymeric or metallic material.

27. The flow restrictor of claim 17 , wherein the tube has a nominal outer diameter of ⅜ inches and a nominal inner diameter of ¼ inches.

28. The flow restrictor of claim 17 , wherein the tube is positioned in a bottom portion of the annulus of the connection.

29. The flow restrictor of claim 17 , wherein the tube extends beyond the annular restriction device and into the annulus of the connection.

30. The flow restrictor of claim 17 , wherein the conically shaped screen has an apex that is spaced apart from the tube.

31. The flow restrictor of claim 30 , wherein the through-channel is configured to allow liquid to drain freely from the annulus of the connection through the through-channel.
