Abstract

A composition including crosslinked expandable polymeric microparticles capable of hydrolysis at or below neutral pH and a method of modifying the permeability to water of a subterranean formation by introducing such compositions into the subterranean formation. This disclosure further relates to compositions and methods for the recovery of hydrocarbon fluids from a subterranean reservoir or formation subjected to CO 2 or CO 2 Water Alternating Gas flooding at low pH and increases the mobilization and/or recovery rate of hydrocarbon fluids present in the subterranean formations.

Claims (9)

1. An injection fluid for the recovery of hydrocarbon fluids from a subterranean formation, comprising an aqueous medium and about 100 ppm to about 50,000 ppm of crosslinked polymeric microparticles based on polymer actives in the fluid, wherein the crosslinked polymeric microparticles comprise about 0.9 to about 20 mole percent of one or more labile crosslinkers, wherein the particles have an expanded particle size distribution and rheology suitable to impede a subterranean flow of water, and wherein the at least one labile crosslinker is selected from at least one of structures 1-11, 13-26:

2. The injection composition of claim 1 , wherein the crosslinked polymeric microparticles further comprise a non-labile crosslinker.

3. The injection composition of claim 1 , wherein the crosslinked polymeric microparticles are characterized by the absence of a non-labile crosslinker.

4. The injection composition of claim 3 , wherein the polymeric microparticle is converted to a polymer solution within the subterranean flow.

5. The injection composition of claim 1 , wherein the viscosity of the fluid is not affected by the salinity thereof.

6. The injection composition of claim 1 , wherein the composition is used in a carbon dioxide and water tertiary recovery project.

7. The injection composition of claim 1 , wherein the subterranean reservoir was subjected to CO 2 flooding or alternating CO 2 gas and water flooding.

8. The injection composition of claim 1 , wherein the subterranean reservoir is at or below neutral pH.

9. The injection composition of claim 1 , wherein the subterranean reservoir is from about pH 3 to about pH 6.
