Abstract

Surgical systems are disclosed. Surgical systems can include evacuation systems for evacuating smoke, fluid, and/or particulates from a surgical site. A surgical evacuation system can be intelligent and may include one or more sensors for detecting one or more properties of the surgical system, evacuation system, surgical procedure, surgical site, and/or patient tissue, for example.

Claims (38)

1. A method, comprising:

utilizing an evacuation system comprising an evacuation processor communicatively coupled to a surgical hub comprising a hub processor;

obtaining a parameter indicative of a property of a fluid evacuated from a surgical site;

adjusting, by the evacuation processor, the evacuation system based on the parameter;

communicating the parameter to the surgical hub; and

adjusting, by the hub processor, a surgical device based on the communication;

wherein the evacuation system further comprises a pump and a motor operably configured to drive the pump, and wherein the method further comprises determining, by the evacuation processor, an adjustment speed for the pump based on the parameter.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein obtaining the parameter comprises at least one of detecting a particulate concentration in the fluid, detecting an aerosol percentage in the fluid, detecting a contamination percentage in the fluid, or detecting a temperature of the fluid, or combinations thereof.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein adjusting the evacuation system based on the parameter comprises automatically adjusting a speed of the pump based on the parameter.

4. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

receiving an operator input corresponding to a requested pump speed; and

operating the motor at the requested pump speed unless the parameter exceeds a threshold parameter.

5. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

monitoring a functional parameter of the motor; and

communicating the functional parameter to the surgical hub.

6. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

optimizing, by the hub processor, an operational parameter of the surgical device based on the parameter; and

communicating the optimized operational parameter to the surgical device.

7. The method of claim 6 , wherein the surgical device comprises an electrosurgical device, and wherein optimizing the operational parameter of the surgical device comprises determining an optimal generator waveform for the electrosurgical device.

8. The method of claim 7 , wherein the surgical hub comprises a situational awareness module, and wherein determining the optimal generator waveform for the electrosurgical device comprises determining, by the situational awareness module, a step of a surgical procedure.

9. The method of claim 6 , further comprising:

receiving an operator input corresponding to a requested power level for the surgical device; and

operating the surgical device at the requested power level unless the parameter exceeds a threshold parameter.

10. A method, comprising:

utilizing an evacuation system comprising an evacuation processor, a pump, a sensor, and a motor operably configured to drive the pump;

obtaining, by the sensor, a parameter indicative of a property of a fluid evacuated from a surgical site;

adjusting, by the evacuation processor, an operational parameter of the evacuation system based on the parameter;

communicating the operational parameter of the evacuation system to a surgical hub;

determining, by a hub processor of the surgical hub, an adjustment to an operational parameter of a surgical device based on the communication; and

communicating, by the surgical hub, a signal indicative of the adjustment to the operational parameter of the surgical device to the surgical device based on the determination.

11. The method of claim 10 , wherein adjusting the operational parameter of the evacuation system comprises adjusting a speed of the motor.

12. The method of claim 10 , further comprising automatically communicating, by the evacuation processor, the operational parameter of the evacuation system to the surgical hub.

13. The method of claim 10 , wherein the property of the fluid comprises at least one of a particulate concentration in the fluid, an aerosol percentage in the fluid, a contamination percentage in the fluid, or a temperature of the fluid, or combinations thereof.

14. The method of claim 11 , wherein the parameter comprises a particulate concentration, and wherein adjusting the speed of the motor comprises increasing the revolutions per minute of the motor based on the particulate concentration exceeding a threshold value.

15. The method of claim 14 , wherein the parameter comprises a particulate concentration, and wherein adjusting the speed of the motor comprises operating the motor at a minimum speed based on the particulate concentration dropping below a minimum value.

16. The method of claim 10 , wherein the method further comprises optimizing, by the hub processor, the operational parameter of the surgical device based on the communication, and wherein determining an adjustment to the operational parameter comprises determining an adjustment to the operating parameter is further based on the optimized operational parameter.

17. The method of claim 16 , wherein the surgical device comprises an electrosurgical device, and wherein optimizing the operational parameter of the surgical device comprises determining an optimal generator waveform for the electrosurgical device.

18. The method of claim 17 , wherein the surgical hub comprises a situational awareness module, and wherein determining the optimal generator waveform for the electrosurgical device comprises determining, by the situational awareness module, a step of a surgical procedure.
