Abstract

A fiber optic plug, suitable for multi-core fiber (MCF), is structured to hold satellite cores of the MCF in a precise angular positions so as to attain suitable alignment with satellite cores of a mating connector. The plug includes features to permit a ferrule holding the MCF to move longitudinally relative to the connector's housing, so that a spring may control a mating force to an abutting ferrule of a mating connector. The ferrule may be held by ferrule barrel having splines projecting away from an outer peripheral surface. The splines may slide longitudinally within notches of the connector housing or a strength member attached to the connector housing. The notches and splines have a tight tolerance, so that the satellite cores remain in a desired, set angular position.

Claims (42)

1. A multi-core fiber connector comprising:

a ferrule;

a multi-core fiber secured within said ferrule;

a ferrule barrel surrounding at least a portion of said ferrule, said ferrule barrel including a spline extending away from an outer peripheral surface of said ferrule barrel;

a strength member to a rear of said ferrule barrel, said strength member including a notch receiving said spline, so that said spline can move within said notch in a first direction which is substantially parallel to an extension direction of said ferrule; and

a connector housing having a rectangular cross section with an inner cavity to a front of said ferrule barrel and receiving said ferrule barrel and at least a portion of said strength member, wherein said strength member is attached directly or indirectly to said connector housing such that said notch and said spline are generally aligned to one of four corners of said rectangular cross section of said connector housing.

2. The connector of claim 1 , wherein said spline passes through said notch and has a portion extending outwardly from an outer periphery of said strength member.

3. The connector of claim 2 , wherein said housing includes an indentation to provide clearance for said portion of said spline extending outwardly of said outer periphery of said strength member.

4. The connector of claim 1 , wherein said ferrule is cylindrical in shape, and wherein said multi-core fiber is secured within a central bore of said ferrule by epoxy.

5. The connector of claim 1 , wherein said ferrule barrel is adhered to said at least a portion of said ferrule.

6. The connector of claim 1 , wherein said ferrule barrel is attached to said at least a portion of said ferrule by a press fit.

7. The connector of claim 1 , wherein the width of said notch is not more than 0.002 inches greater than a width of said spline.

8. The connector of claim 1 , wherein a front face of said ferrule barrel includes a recessed portion to receive a tab of a sleeve within an adapter.

9. The connector of claim 1 , further comprising:

an extender surrounding said strength member, and wherein said strength member is directly attached to said extender, and said extender is directly attached to a portion of said inner cavity of said connector housing.

10. The connector of claim 1 , further comprising:

a tube located between said strength member and the multi-core fiber to the rear of said ferrule barrel; and

a spring surrounding said tube and residing between said ferrule barrel and a portion of said strength member and biasing said ferrule barrel away from said portion of said strength member.

11. A multi-core fiber connector comprising:

a ferrule;

a multi-core fiber secured within said ferrule;

a ferrule barrel surrounding at least a portion of said ferrule, said ferrule barrel including one of a spline or a notch;

a strength member to a rear of said ferrule barrel, said strength member including the other of a spline or a notch, so that said spline or notch of said ferrule barrel can move within said spline or notch of said strength member in a first direction, which is substantially parallel to an extension direction of said ferrule; and

a connector housing having a rectangular cross section with an inner cavity to a front of said ferrule barrel and receiving said ferrule barrel and at least a portion of said strength member, wherein said strength member is attached directly or indirectly to said connector housing such that said spline or notch of said strength member and said spline or notch of said ferrule barrel are generally aligned to one of four corners of said rectangular cross section of said connector housing.

12. The connector of claim 11 , wherein said ferrule barrel is adhered to said at least a portion of said ferrule.

13. The connector of claim 11 , wherein said ferrule barrel is attached to said at least a portion of said ferrule by a press fit.

14. The connector of claim 11 , wherein the width of said notch is not more than 0.002 inches greater than a width of said spline.

15. The connector of claim 11 , wherein a front face of said ferrule barrel includes a recessed portion to receive a tab of a sleeve within an adapter.

16. The connector of claim 11 , further comprising:

an extender surrounding said strength member, and wherein said strength member is directly attached to said extender, and said extender is directly attached to a portion of said inner cavity of said connector housing.

17. The connector of claim 11 , further comprising:

a tube located between said strength member and the multi-core fiber to the rear of said ferrule barrel; and

a spring surrounding said tube and residing between said ferrule barrel and a portion of said strength member and biasing said ferrule barrel away from said portion of said strength member.

18. A multi-core fiber connector comprising:

a ferrule;

a multi-core fiber secured within said ferrule;

a ferrule barrel surrounding at least a portion of said ferrule, said ferrule barrel including four splines extending away from an outer peripheral surface of said ferrule barrel, said four splines being equally spaced around said peripheral surface of said ferrule barrel at intervals of ninety degrees;

four notches receiving said four splines and permitting said four splines to move within said four notches in a first direction which is substantially parallel to an extension direction of said ferrule;

a strength member to a rear of said ferrule barrel, said strength member including four notches receiving said four splines; and

a connector housing having a rectangular cross section with an inner cavity receiving said ferrule barrel and at least a portion of said strength member, wherein said strength member is attached directly or indirectly to said connector housing such that said four notches and said four splines are generally aligned to four corners of said rectangular cross section of said connector housing.

19. The connector of claim 18 , wherein each spline of said four splines passes through its notch in said strength member and has a portion extending outwardly from an outer periphery of said strength member.

20. The connector of claim 19 , wherein said housing includes four indentations within said inner cavity at said four corners of said rectangular cross section of said connector housing, and wherein said four indentations provide clearance for said portions of said four splines extending outwardly of said outer periphery of said strength member.
