Solar panel mounting configuration
Mounting clamps may be utilized to quickly and easily secure solar panel modules relative to mounting rails, which may in turn be secured relative to a mounting surface (e.g., a roof). The mounting clamps may be configured to quickly secure the solar pane modules relative to the mounting rails by tightening a tightening element to pull a clamp element toward the surface of a mounting rail, thereby clamping a portion (e.g., a frame) of a solar panel module between the clamping element and an outer surface of the mounting rail.
1. A mounting clamp for mounting a solar panel onto a mounting rail, the mounting clamp comprising:
a top engagement feature defining a top clamping portion configured to engage a frame portion of the solar panel at a first end of the top engagement feature;
a bottom engagement feature pivotably secured at a second end of the bottom engagement feature relative to a second end of the top engagement feature and defining a bottom clamping portion configured to engage an interior portion of the mounting rail at a first end of the bottom engagement feature; and
a tightening element comprising a head component and a body component defining a length that extends along a tightening element axis through a first sidewall of the bottom engagement feature that is adjacent to the first end of the bottom engagement feature, and at least partially through a first sidewall of the top engagement feature that is adjacent to the second end of the top engagement feature such that the head component is positioned adjacent the bottom engagement feature,
wherein the tightening element is configured to, when tightened by turning the head component, cause the bottom engagement feature to pivot relative to the top engagement feature and to close a gap between the top clamping portion of the top engagement feature and the bottom clamping portion of the bottom engagement feature.
2. The mounting clamp of claim 1 , wherein the tightening element is a bolt rotatable about the tightening element axis, and wherein tightening the bolt causes the gap to close in a direction perpendicular to bolt axis extending along a length of the bolt.
3. The mounting clamp of claim 2 , wherein the bolt loosely extends through the bottom engagement feature and threads into the top engagement feature.
4. The mounting clamp of claim 2 , wherein the bottom engagement feature is pivotably secured relative to the top engagement feature about a pivot axis perpendicular to the bolt axis.
5. The mounting clamp of claim 1 , further comprising a pivot pin, and wherein the top engagement feature and the bottom engagement feature are secured relative to the pivot pin.
