Abstract

A reusable battery indicator includes a voltage sensor, a communication circuit communicatively connected to the voltage sensor, an antenna operatively coupled to the communication circuit, and a connection mechanism having a connector and a retainer. The connector and the retainer are electrically connected to the voltage sensor, and the connector is adapted to be removably connected to a first battery terminal, thereby providing an electrical connection between the voltage sensor and the first battery terminal. The retainer is adapted to removably secure the voltage sensor to a can of a battery, thereby providing an electrical connection between the voltage sensor and the can of the battery. An electrical circuit is completed between the voltage sensor and the first battery terminal and between the voltage sensor and the can. The connection mechanism includes part of an electrical lock and key assembly.

Claims (10)

1. A battery with an electrical lock portion of an electrical lock and key assembly, the battery comprising:

a housing, the housing having a positive terminal, and a negative terminal; and

a label attached to an outer surface of the housing, the label including an electrical lock portion that is separated from both the positive terminal and the negative terminal,

wherein the electrical lock portion is configured to interact with an electrical key on a battery indicator to allow the battery indicator to receive power, the electrical key generating a pulse that enables functionality of the battery indicator when interacting with the electrical lock portion.

2. The battery of claim 1 , wherein the electrical lock portion comprises a printed magnetic strip.

3. The battery of claim 1 , wherein the electrical lock portion comprises an array on the battery label.

4. The battery of claim 1 , wherein the electrical lock portion comprises a symbol on the battery label.

5. The battery of claim 1 , the electrical lock portion and the electrical key create a coupled magnetic sensor system.

6. The battery of claim 1 , wherein the pulse is an enable pulse generated by signal conditioning circuitry on the electronic module.

7. The battery of claim 1 , wherein the electrical key comprises a Hall-effect sensor.
