Abstract

A hard start capacitor replacement unit has a plurality of capacitors in a container sized to fit in existing hard start capacitor space. The capacitors are 4 metallized film capacitors wound in a single cylindrical capacitive element. The container has a common terminal and capacitors value terminals for the plurality of capacitors, which may be connected singly or in combination to provide a selected capacitance. An electronic or other relay connects the selected capacitance in parallel with a motor run capacitor. The hard start capacitor replacement unit is thereby adapted to replace a wide variety of hard start capacitors.

Claims (22)

1. An apparatus comprising:

a container capable of receiving a plurality of capacitive devices, each of the capacitive devices having a first capacitor terminal and a second capacitor terminal;

a cover mountable to the container, the cover comprising:

a common cover terminal having at least one contact extending from the cover;

a plurality of capacitor cover terminals, each of the plurality of capacitor cover terminals having at least one contact extending from the cover;

a plurality of first conductors, each first conductor electrically connectable to one of the first capacitor terminals of the plurality of capacitive devices and one of the plurality of capacitor cover terminals;

a second conductor electrically connectable to each of the second capacitor terminals of the plurality of capacitive devices and the common cover terminal; and

a plurality of insulation structures, each insulation structure associated with one of the plurality of capacitor cover terminals; and

a relay that controls opening and closing of contacts, wherein the contacts open and close in response to a monitored condition of a motor connected to the apparatus, and selected ones of the plurality of capacitive devices are connected across a run capacitor of the motor when the contacts are closed,

wherein the relay is sized to fit above the container and entirely fit within a cylindrical envelope being projected from the container, and wherein the relay sized to fit within the cylindrical envelope being projected from the container is coverable by a removable cap attachable to a top of the container.

2. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein each of the plurality of capacitive devices is a metalized film capacitor.

3. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein four capacitive devices are provided in the apparatus.

4. The apparatus of claim 3 , wherein the four capacitive devices have values of about 48 microfarads, about 48 microfarads, about 88 microfarads, and about 112 microfarads, respectively.

5. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the common cover terminal is centered on the capacitor cover.

6. The apparatus of claim 1 , further comprising an insulation barrier separating the capacitor cover terminals and the common cover terminal.

7. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the relay is an electronic relay.

8. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the relay is a control relay or a potential relay.

9. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the apparatus is a hard start capacitor replacement unit adaptable to a plurality of motors of a type having a run capacitor and each requiring different hard start capacitance values.

10. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the plurality of capacitive devices have a combined capacitance value of about 296 microfarads.

11. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the relay is coverable by the removable cap directly attachable to the top of the container.

12. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the apparatus is a hard start capacitor replacement unit that provides a selection of capacitance values.

13. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the removable cap is directly attachable to the container.
