Abstract

Diabetes management systems may include a glucose monitoring device adapted to transmit glucose data and at least one accessory in communication with the glucose monitoring device and adapted to provide at least one alarm or alert based on the glucose data.

Claims (44)

1. A diabetes management system comprising:

a glucose monitoring device configured to wirelessly transmit glucose data;

at least one dose-capture device configured to:

wirelessly receive glucose data, receipt of the glucose data from the glucose monitoring device initiated responsive to a user-facilitated interaction between the at least one dose-capture device and the glucose monitoring device;

responsive to knowing or determining a dosage of insulin administered from an insulin-delivery device, enable providing a recommended insulin dosage responsive to receiving glucose data;

responsive to not knowing or determining a dosage of insulin administered from the insulin-delivery device, disable providing a recommended insulin dosage responsive to receiving glucose data absent a user override;

receive the user override; and

responsive to receiving the user override, enable providing a recommended insulin dosage responsive to receiving glucose data despite not knowing or determining a dosage of insulin administered from the insulin-delivery device; and

at least one accessory in wireless communication with the glucose monitoring device and configured to provide at least one alarm or alert based on the glucose data.

2. The diabetes management system of claim 1 , wherein the system further comprises a mobile application on a smartphone or a personal computing device, the mobile application being adapted to receive wireless communications from the at least one dose-capture device and the at least one accessory.

3. The diabetes management system of claim 1 , wherein the at least one accessory is adapted to receive dose-capture information from the at least one dose-capture device, either directly or indirectly, and to use the dose-capture information to determine whether to issue a high glucose alarm or alert.

4. The diabetes management system of claim 1 , wherein the at least one dose-capture device comprises at least a portion of an insulin pen.

5. The diabetes management system of claim 1 , wherein the at least one dose-capture device is a pen cap.

6. The diabetes management system of claim 5 , wherein the pen cap includes a user interface comprising a plurality of user-selectable icons or buttons each representing different meal characteristics or menu choices.

7. The diabetes management system of claim 5 , wherein the pen cap includes memory to store one or more user-specific dosage parameters.

8. The diabetes management system of claim 6 , wherein the pen cap includes a processor in communication with a memory and adapted to receive blood glucose data, the processor being adapted to set initial meal characteristics associated with each of the plurality of user-selectable icons or buttons based on at least one user-specific dosage parameters, the processor further being adapted to update the meal characteristics associated with each of the plurality of user-selectable icons or buttons based upon the blood glucose data.

9. The diabetes management system of claim 1 , wherein the accessory includes a user interface adapted to display a blood glucose value and/or a blood glucose trend line and/or rate-of-change.

10. The diabetes management system of claim 1 , wherein the accessory includes a plurality of icons that can be illuminated or made more salient to indicate one or more alarm or alert conditions.

11. The diabetes management system of claim 1 , wherein the accessory includes an annunciator operating via a vibration alarm or an audible alarm.

12. The diabetes management system of claim 11 , wherein the at least one dose-capture device does not include any component adapted to issue a vibrational or audible alarm.

13. The diabetes management system of claim 1 , wherein the at least one dose-capture device does not receive any blood glucose data absent user-facilitated interaction with the dose-capture device.

14. A diabetes management system comprising:

a glucose monitoring device configured to transmit glucose data;

at least one dose-capture device configured to:

receive glucose data, receipt of the glucose data from the glucose monitoring device initiated responsive to a user-facilitated interaction between the glucose monitoring device and the at least one dose-capture device;

responsive to knowing or determining a dosage of insulin administered from an insulin-delivery device, enable providing a recommended insulin dosage responsive to receiving glucose data;

responsive to not knowing or determining a dosage of insulin administered from the insulin-delivery device, disable providing a recommended insulin dosage responsive to receiving glucose data absent a user override;

receive the user override; and

responsive to receiving the user override, enable providing a recommended insulin dosage responsive to receiving glucose data despite not knowing or determining a dosage of insulin administered from the insulin-delivery device; and

at least one accessory in communication with the glucose monitoring device and configured to provide at least one alarm or alert based on the glucose data.

15. A method of managing diabetes, the method comprising:

receiving, at a dose capture device, blood glucose data, receipt of the blood glucose data from a blood glucose monitoring device initiated responsive to a user-facilitated interaction between the blood glucose monitoring device and the dose capture device;

responsive to knowing or determining a dose of insulin administered from a manual insulin-delivery device, enabling providing a recommended insulin dosage responsive to receiving glucose data;

responsive to not knowing or determining a dosage of insulin administered from the insulin-delivery device, disabling providing a recommended insulin dosage responsive to receiving glucose data absent a user override;

receive the user override;

responsive to receiving the user override, enable providing a recommended insulin dosage responsive to receiving glucose data despite not knowing or determining a dosage of insulin administered from the insulin-delivery device; and

providing, at a user interface, an alarm or alert responsive to the blood glucose data.

16. The method of claim 15 , further comprising:

detecting an alarm condition or an alert condition responsive to dose capture information indicative of the dose of insulin administered from the manual insulin delivery device; and

providing the alarm or alert responsive to the blood glucose data and the detected alarm condition or the detected alert condition.

17. The method of claim 15 , wherein providing the alarm or alert comprises initiating a high glucose alarm or alert.

18. The method of claim 15 , further comprising displaying a plurality of user-selectable icons or buttons each representing different meal characteristics or menu choices on the user interface.

19. The method of claim 18 , further comprising setting initial meal characteristics associated with each of the plurality of user-selectable icons or buttons based on user-specific dosage parameters.

20. The method of claim 19 , further comprising updating the meal characteristics associated with each of the plurality of user-selectable icons or buttons based upon the blood glucose data.
