Abstract

Methods and systems are described for a media guidance application that manages media subscriptions between a user and a content provider. In particular, the media guidance application may automatically identify subscription terms that are beneficial for both a user and for a content provider.

Claims (76)

1. A method for managing media content subscriptions for a user, the method comprising:

retrieving a user profile from memory;

searching, by control circuitry, media assets available from a plurality of content providers to identify a plurality of media assets matching a user preference in the user profile;

identifying, by the control circuitry, a first subset of the plurality of media assets available from a first content provider of the plurality of content providers, wherein the user requires a first subscription to the first content provider to access the first subset;

retrieving from the first content provider, by the control circuitry, first user profile characteristics indicated by the first content provider as being of interest to the first content provider;

comparing, by the control circuitry, the first user profile characteristics to the user profile;

based on comparing the first user profile characteristics to the user profile, determining, by the control circuitry, a degree to which the first user profile characteristics correspond to the user profile;

based on the degree to which the first user profile characteristics correspond to the user profile, determining, by the control circuitry, first subscription terms for the first subscription, wherein the first subscription terms comprise a cost or time period for the first subscription; and

transmitting, by the control circuitry, to the first content provider;

a first subscription request featuring the first subscription terms; and second subscription terms,

wherein the second subscription terms are terms provided to a second content provider for a second subscription to a second subset of the plurality of media assets, and

wherein the first content provider is different than the second content provider.

2. The method of claim 1 , further comprising retrieving the user profile from memory in response to detecting that the user is going to cancel a third subscription to a third content provider.

3. The method of claim 2 , wherein detecting that the user is going to cancel the third subscription to the third content provider further comprises detecting that the first subset will no longer be available from the third content provider at a future date.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the first user profile characteristics include at least one of user demographic data, viewing history, price preferences, media consumption rate, commercial viewing preferences, and retail purchase information.

5. The method of claim 1 , further comprising receiving information from the user to populate the user profile, wherein the information is compared to the first user profile characteristics to determine the degree to which the first user profile characteristics correspond to the user profile.

6. The method of claim 5 , further comprising:

generating for display a first promotion for the first subscription based on the information;

receiving an update to the information from the user; and

generating for display a second promotion for the first subscription based on the updated information.

7. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

identifying the second subset of the plurality of media assets available from the second content provider of the plurality of content providers, wherein the user requires the second subscription to the second content provider to access the second subset;

retrieving second user profile characteristics indicated by the second content provider as being of interest to the second content provider;

comparing the second user profile characteristics to the user profile;

based on comparing the second user profile characteristics to the user profile, determining a degree to which the second user profile characteristics correspond to the user profile;

based on the degree to which the second user profile characteristics correspond to the user profile, determining the second subscription terms for the second subscription; and

transmitting a second subscription request featuring the second subscription terms to the second content provider.

8. The method of claim 7 , further comprising:

retrieving subscription term criterion from the first content provider, wherein the subscription term criterion indicates subscription terms acceptable to the first content provider based on the user profile.

9. The method of claim 8 , wherein the subscription term criterion is based on the user subscribing to both the first content provider and the second content provider.

10. The method of claim 1 , wherein the first subscription request includes a threshold number of users that will subscribe to the first content provider at the first subscription terms.

11. The method of claim 1 , wherein retrieving the first user profile characteristics from the first content provider comprises:

transmitting a query to the first content provider for first user profile characteristics of interest to the first content provider; and

receiving, in response to the query, the first user profile characteristics from the first content provider.

12. The method of claim 1 , wherein determining the first subscription terms for the first subscription comprises:

accessing a table having a plurality of subscription terms respectively corresponding to different degrees of correspondence between the first user profile characteristics and user profiles; and

selecting, among the plurality of subscription terms in the table, the subscription terms corresponding to the determined degree to which the first user profile characteristics correspond to the user profile as the first subscription terms for the first subscription.

13. A system for managing media content subscriptions for a user, the system comprising:

storage circuitry configured to:

store a user profile; and

store media assets available from a plurality of content providers;

control circuitry configured to:

retrieve a user profile from memory;

search the stored media assets available from the plurality of content providers to identify a plurality of media assets matching a user preference in the user profile;

identify a first subset of the plurality of media assets available from a first content provider of the plurality of content providers, wherein the user requires a first subscription to the first content provider to access the first subset;

retrieve, from the first content provider, first user profile characteristics indicated by the first content provider as being of interest to the first content provider;

compare the first user profile characteristics to the user profile;

based on comparing the first user profile characteristics to the user profile, determine a degree to which the first user profile characteristics correspond to the user profile; and

based on the degree to which the first user profile characteristics correspond to the user profile, determine first subscription terms for the first subscription, wherein the first subscription terms comprise a cost or time period for the first subscription; and

communications circuitry configured to:

transmit to the first content provider;

a first subscription request featuring the first subscription terms; and

second subscription terms,

wherein the second subscription terms are terms provided to a second content provider for a second subscription to a second subset of the plurality of media assets, and

wherein the first content provider is different than the second content provider.

14. The system of claim 13 , wherein the control circuitry is further configured to retrieve the user profile from memory in response to detecting that the user is going to cancel a third subscription to a third content provider.

15. The system of claim 14 , wherein the control circuitry configured to detect that the user is going to cancel the third subscription to the third content provider is further configured to detecting that the first subset will no longer be available from the third content provider at a future date.

16. The system of claim 13 , wherein the first user profile characteristics include at least one of user demographic data, viewing history, price preferences, media consumption rate, commercial viewing preferences, and retail purchase information.

17. The system of claim 13 , wherein the control circuitry is further configured to receive information from the user to populate the user profile, wherein the information is compared to the first user profile characteristics to determine the degree to which the first user profile characteristics correspond to the user profile.

18. The system of claim 17 , wherein the control circuitry is further configured to:

generate for display a first promotion for the first subscription based on the information;

receive an update to the information from the user; and

generate for display a second promotion for the first subscription based on the updated information.

19. The system of claim 13 , wherein:

the control circuitry is further configured to:

identify the second subset of the plurality of media assets available from the second content provider of the plurality of content providers, wherein the user requires the second subscription to the second content provider to access the second subset;

retrieve second user profile characteristics indicated by the second content provider as being of interest to the second content provider;

compare the second user profile characteristics to the user profile;

based on comparing the second user profile characteristics to the user profile, determine a degree to which the second user profile characteristics correspond to the user profile; and

based on the degree to which the second user profile characteristics correspond to the user profile, determine the second subscription terms for the second subscription; and

the communication circuitry is further configured to:

transmit a second subscription request featuring the second subscription terms to the second content provider.

20. The system of claim 19 , wherein the control circuitry is further configured to:

retrieve subscription term criterion from the first content provider, wherein the subscription term criterion indicates subscription terms acceptable to the first content provider based on the user profile.

21. The system of claim 20 , wherein the subscription term criterion is based on the user subscribing to both the first content provider and the second content provider.

22. The system of claim 13 , wherein the first subscription request includes a threshold number of users that will subscribe to the first content provider at the first subscription terms.
