Oxidized cellulose microspheres
A process for forming microspheres is disclosed. The process includes contacting a solvent with a modified cellulose to form a solution; contacting the modified cellulose solution with at least one bioactive agent to form a discontinuous phase liquid; contacting the discontinuous phase liquid with a continuous phase liquid to form an emulsion; and contacting the emulsion with a third phase liquid to extract the solvent from the emulsion, thereby forming a plurality of modified cellulose microspheres.
1. A microsphere comprising:
a first biodegradable polymer encapsulating at least one additional microsphere, the at least one additional microsphere including a second biodegradable polymer and at least one bioactive agent, wherein the first biodegradable polymer and the second biodegradable polymer are different and one of the first biodegradable polymer or the second biodegradable polymer is oxidized cellulose.
2. The microsphere according to claim 1 , wherein the first biodegradable polymer encapsulating the at least one additional microsphere is further encapsulated in a third micro sphere formed of the second biodegradable polymer.
3. The microsphere according to claim 1 , wherein one of the first biodegradable polymer or the second biodegradable polymer is an aliphatic polyester.
4. The microsphere according to claim 3 , wherein the aliphatic polyester is selected from the group consisting of polylactide, polylactide-co-glycolide, polylactide-polycaprolactone, and combinations thereof.
5. The microsphere according to claim 1 , wherein the first biodegradable polymer is selected from the group consisting of polylactide, polylactide-co-glycolide, polylactide-polycaprolactone, and combinations thereof and the second biodegradable polymer is oxidized cellulose.
6. The microsphere according to claim 1 , wherein the first biodegradable polymer is oxidized cellulose and the second biodegradable polymer is selected from the group consisting of polylactide, polylactide-co-glycolide, polylactide-polycaprolactone, and combinations thereof.
7. The microsphere according to claim 1 , further comprising at least one additional bioactive agent.
8. The microsphere according to claim 7 , wherein the at least one additional bioactive agent is selected from the group consisting of a hydrophilic bioactive agent, a protein therapeutic, a biologic, and combinations thereof and the first biodegradable polymer is oxidized cellulose.
9. A composition comprising:
a first microsphere including a first biodegradable polymer, the first microsphere encapsulating at least one second microsphere, wherein the at least one second microsphere encapsulates a second biodegradable polymer and at least one bioactive agent, wherein the first biodegradable polymer and the second biodegradable polymer are different and one of the first biodegradable polymer or the second biodegradable polymer is oxidized cellulose.
10. The composition according to claim 9 , wherein the at least one second microsphere encapsulates a third microsphere formed of the first biodegradable polymer.
11. The composition according to claim 9 , wherein one of the first biodegradable polymer or the second biodegradable polymer is an aliphatic polyester.
12. The composition according to claim 11 , wherein the aliphatic polyester is selected from the group consisting of polylactide, polylactide-co-glycolide, polylactide-polycaprolactone, and combinations thereof.
13. The composition according to claim 9 , wherein the first biodegradable polymer is selected from the group consisting of polylactide, polylactide-co-glycolide, polylactide-polycaprolactone, and combinations thereof and the second biodegradable polymer is oxidized cellulose.
14. The composition according to claim 9 , wherein the first biodegradable polymer is oxidized cellulose and the second biodegradable polymer is selected from the group consisting of polylactide, polylactide-co-glycolide, polylactide-polycaprolactone, and combinations thereof.
15. The composition according to claim 9 , further comprising at least one additional bioactive agent.
16. The composition according to claim 15 , wherein the at least one additional bioactive agent is selected from the group consisting of a hydrophilic bioactive agent, a protein therapeutic, a biologic, and combinations thereof and the first biodegradable polymer is oxidized cellulose.
17. A composition comprising:
a first microsphere including an oxidized cellulose; and
at least one second microsphere encapsulated in the first microsphere, wherein the at least one second microsphere includes a biodegradable polymer other than oxidized cellulose and at least one bioactive agent.
18. The composition according to claim 17 , further comprising:
at least one third microsphere encapsulated in the second microsphere, the at least one third microsphere including the oxidized cellulose.
19. The composition according to claim 17 , wherein the biodegradable polymer is an aliphatic polyester.
20. The composition according to claim 19 , wherein the aliphatic polyester is selected from the group consisting of polylactide, polylactide-co-glycolide, polylactide-polycaprolactone, and combinations thereof.
