Abstract

The invention relates to a radially compressible and expandable rotor ( 13, 13 a, 13 b ) for a pump having at least one impeller blade ( 20, 22, 36, 36 a, 36 b, 36 c, 36 d, 36 e, 36 f, 36 g, 37, 37 a, 37 b, 37 c, 37 d, 37 e, 37 f, 74, 88, 89, 90 ), wherein the impeller blade has an impeller blade body whose material is elastically deformable as well as at least one stiffening strut ( 25, 26, 27, 30, 31, 32, 52, 53, 57, 58, 62, 63, 67, 95 ) which is at least partially embedded in the material of the impeller blade body. The struts are designed suitably in size, shape and arrangement and are integrated in suitable hollow spaces of the impeller blade body for stabilizing the impeller blade. Elements with tensile strength can additionally be provided.

Claims (24)

1. A radially expandable and compressible blood pump rotor, the rotor comprising:

a central hub body;

a first impeller blade extending from a blade root, coupled to the central hub body, to a blade tip radially distal from the central hub body, the first impeller blade composed of an elastically deformable material;

a channel extending through the first impeller blade from the central hub body to the blade tip, the channel having a length from the central hub body to the blade tip, and a width measured perpendicular to the length; and

a stiffening strut slidably disposed within the channel in the first impeller blade.

2. The blood pump rotor of claim 1 , wherein the first impeller blade has a first deployed state, a second compressed state in which the blade tip is compressed toward the central hub body, and a third expanded state wherein the blade tip is radially expanded to a maximum radial distance from the central hub body, wherein the first deployed state is between the second compressed state and the third expanded state.

3. The blood pump rotor of claim 2 , wherein the stiffening strut is movable in the channel between the first deployed state, the second compressed state, and the third expanded state of the first impeller blade.

4. The blood pump rotor of claim 3 , wherein a length of the channel is greater than a length of the stiffening strut.

5. The blood pump rotor of claim 3 , wherein a width of the channel is greater than a width of the stiffening strut.

6. The blood pump rotor of claim 3 , wherein the stiffening strut is pivotably coupled to the central hub body.

7. The blood pump rotor of claim 3 , wherein the stiffening strut extends into a hollow center of the central hub body.

8. The blood pump rotor of claim 7 , wherein the stiffening strut extends further into the hollow center of the central hub body when the first impeller blade is in the second compressed state.

9. The blood pump rotor of claim 8 , wherein an end of the stiffening strut extending into the hollow center of the central hub body includes an abutment body.

10. The blood pump rotor of claim 9 , wherein the stiffening strut is adhered to the material of the first impeller blade.

11. The blood pump rotor of claim 10 , wherein the stiffening strut is adhered to the material of the first impeller blade within the channel at an end proximal to the central hub body.

12. The blood pump rotor of claim 10 , wherein the stiffening strut is adhered to the material of the first impeller blade within the channel at an end distal from the central hub body.

13. The blood pump rotor of claim 10 , wherein the stiffening strut is adhered to the material of the first impeller blade by an adhesive.

14. The blood pump rotor of claim 10 , wherein the stiffening strut is adhered to the material of the first impeller blade by shape matching of the channel and at least a portion of the stiffening strut.

15. The blood pump rotor of claim 10 , wherein the stiffening strut is adhered to the material of the first impeller blade by a complementary roughness of at least a portion of the stiffening strut and at least a portion of the material in the channel.

16. The blood pump rotor of claim 3 , wherein the stiffening strut is formed as a loop.

17. The blood pump rotor of claim 3 , wherein the channel is formed in the first impeller blade such that the stiffening strut is embedded in the first impeller blade material.

18. The blood pump rotor of claim 3 , wherein a proximal end of the first impeller blade extends into a hollow center of the central hub body.

19. The blood pump rotor of claim 18 , wherein the proximal end of the first impeller blade comprises an abutment body within the central hub body.

20. The blood pump rotor of claim 18 , wherein the proximal end of the first impeller blade is slidable within the hollow center of the central hub body.
