Abstract

Systems, methods, and articles for providing an antimicrobial composition to the proximal elements of a trans-dermal catheter and into the lumen of the transdermal catheter are disclosed. In an embodiment, an antimicrobial composition on surface a cap element transfers antimicrobial to the proximal end of the transdermal catheter. The system comprises an elongate member configured for insertion into a lumen of a catheter, the elongate member containing an antimicrobial.

Claims (51)

1. A packaging container for securing antimicrobial caps prior to use, the packaging container comprising:

a body comprising:

a first body portion comprising:

a first opening at a first end of the first body portion leading to a first volume within the first body portion;

exterior threads configured to selectively receive a first threaded cap; and

a first wall portion extending in a first direction from the first end to a first closed end;

a second body portion comprising:

a second opening at a first end of the second body portion leading to a second volume within the second body portion;

exterior threads configured to selectively receive a second threaded cap; and

a second wall portion extending in a second direction from the first end of the second body portion to a second closed end of the second body portion, wherein the second direction is opposite to the first direction such that the first opening is at a first end of the body and the second opening is at a second end of the body that is opposite to the first end and the second wall portion overlaps the first wall portion in a lengthwise direction of the first and second body portions;

a flattened side portion extending from an outside surface of the first wall portion to an outside surface of the second wall portion;

wherein:

the first open end is laterally offset from the second open end and the first volume is axially offset from the second volume.

2. The packaging container of claim 1 , wherein each of the first and second volumes have an elongate orientation with a length and a diameter of the substantially circular opening, wherein the length is greater than the diameter of the substantially circular opening.

3. The packing container of claim 1 , wherein the first and second openings are substantially circular.

4. A kit comprising the packaging container of claim 1 and two antimicrobial caps that each comprise an elongate member, wherein the first and second volumes are each constructed to receive the elongate member of one of the two caps.

5. The packaging container of claim 1 , wherein the first volume has a longitudinal axis that is substantially parallel with a longitudinal axis of the second volume.

6. The packaging container of claim 1 , wherein the first and second volumes are non-communicating to one another.

7. The kit of claim 4 , configured such that the two antimicrobial caps are coupled with the body such that the two antimicrobial caps are oriented substantially 180 degrees from one another.

8. The packaging container of claim 1 , wherein the packaging container is sterilized and provided in a sealed package.

9. The packaging container of claim 1 , wherein the first and second volumes are separate from one another.

10. The kit of claim 4 , wherein:

the two antimicrobial caps comprise a first antimicrobial cap having a first elongate member and a second antimicrobial cap having a second elongate member;

the packaging container is constructed such that the first elongate member of the first antimicrobial cap projects into the first volume without touching the first wall portion when the first antimicrobial cap is coupled with the first open end of the body, and such that the second elongate member of the second antimicrobial cap projects into the second volume without touching the second wall portion when the second antimicrobial cap is coupled with the second open end of the body.

11. The packaging container of claim 1 , wherein the body is monolithic.

12. The packaging container of claim 1 , wherein the second open end is offset in a lengthwise direction from the first closed end such that, when a second cap is fully inserted onto the second open end, an axially extending space is provided between the second cap and the first closed end.

13. A kit including the packaging container of claim 1 and two threaded caps.

14. The kit of claim 13 , wherein at least a portion of the two threaded caps is coated with an antimicrobial substance.

15. A packaging container for securing antimicrobial caps prior to use, the packaging container comprising:

a body comprising:

a first body portion extending in a first lengthwise direction, the first body portion comprising a first end, the first end comprising a first opening leading to a first volume within the body, the first end comprising exterior threads configured to receive a threaded antimicrobial cap,

a second body portion extending in a second lengthwise direction that is opposite to the first lengthwise direction, the second body portion comprising a second end, the second end comprising a second opening leading to a second volume within the body, the second end comprising exterior threads configured to receive a threaded antimicrobial cap,

wherein:

the first body portion is axially offset from the second body portion such that the first body portion is not coaxial with the second body portion;

the first and second body portions are each configured to receive an antimicrobial cap; and

the body has a flattened side between the first and second body portions that intersects an outer surface of both the first and second body portions.

16. The packaging container of claim 15 , wherein each of the first and second volumes has an elongate orientation with a length greater than a width.

17. The packaging container of claim 15 , wherein the first and second ends are closed.

18. The packing container of claim 15 , wherein the first and second volumes are parallel to one another and are non-communicating with one another.

19. The packaging container of claim 15 , wherein the first and second volumes are each constructed to receive an elongate member of a cap secured to each of the openings on the body.

20. A kit including the packaging container of claim 15 and two antimicrobial caps.

21. A packaging container and for securing a pair of antimicrobial caps, the packaging container comprising:

a body comprising:

a first open end, the first open end comprising a first threaded opening leading to a first volume within the body, the first volume having a closed end; and

a second open end, the second open end comprising a second threaded opening leading to a second volume within the body, the second volume having a closed end;

wherein:

the first and second openings are configured to each hold the antimicrobial caps;

the first open end is axially offset from the second open end and first volume is axially offset from the second volume;

at least the first volume has an inner wall that tapers inwardly along a length of the first volume from the first open end to the closed end such that an inner diameter of the first volume is less at the closed end than at the first open end; and

the packaging container is configured such that the first antimicrobial cap is axially spaced apart from the closed end of the second volume when the first antimicrobial cap is fully engaged with the first open end of the body.

22. The packaging container of claim 21 , wherein each of the first and second volumes have an elongate orientation with a length greater than their width.
